The greatest station wagon ever? Might just be! I've had a lot of fun with this car over the last five years but I'm moving and will no longer have parking space for this classic. This thing is legitimately fast even today, with over 200 horsepower, but it still has a comfortable, smooth interstate ride. The mechanical Torsen limited-slip center differential works great, as does the factory push-button rear locker(!). So much better than newer/cheaper electronic traction control! The air conditioning compressor was replaced with a new unit in 2012, the tires are good, and it has had a recent oil change (Mobile 1). The pictured factory service manuals are included (almost $200 to buy new). It takes about a liter of hydraulic fluid every oil change or so (4-5,000 miles). This has been my daily driver in nice weather for the last few years and I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere! In fact, if you'd rather not pick it up I can deliver it almost anywhere in the lower 48 states or eastern Canada for $.50/mile from zip code 16866 (with payment in hand, of course)! Otherwise, I'll be happy to bring it to your shipper for the same charge. International bidders are welcome, but please understand I have no experience shipping vehicles internationally and you will have to make all necessary arrangements.
As you can see in the photos, the exterior is not in perfect condition but Audi's famous rustproofing has been doing its job. There's a small crack in the lower passenger side corner of the windshield and a chip out of the passenger side taillight but neither has been an inspection issue and the shop I take it to is particular (hence the new brakes all around with only a few thousand miles on them). I can have a fresh Pennsylvania inspection and emissions certification done for you for $60 if that's a concern. What doesn't work: rear wiper/defroster, rear hatch struts, cruise control, and radio (plays CDs fine though). Also, the speedometer usually wavers around a few mph below the actual speed and the oil temperature gauge seems to read low. I replaced the speed sensor so my guess is there's an iffy connection in the dash. I also have an extra set of steel wheels with older snow tires on them. I've never mounted these and I wouldn't want to rely on the tires but the wheels look serviceable, so if you want them I can include them for an extra $20. This would be a great restoration candidate or daily driver. I'd also think this powertrain would be a natural fit for an Ur-Quattro project! Audi Q7 testing gives us clearer view of new look
Wed, 04 Dec 2013Audi just announced its intentions to build the Q1 in 2016. By that time, the company will already have introduced the opposing bookend to that subcompact utility vehicle, the fullsize Q7. The last time we saw the next-gen Audi Q7 out testing, our spy shots were very low quality and didn't reveal much about the luxury SUV. This time around we're able to make out a few key elements about the Q7.
For starters, the unfinished headlights have a stylish, wave-like lighting element with a three-dimensional appearance, while the rear of the Q7 will definitely get a similar wraparound liftgate as the current model. Overall, this prototype looks to be about the same size as the existing Q7, so it will be interesting to see how Audi squeezes almost 800 pounds from the SUV's curb weight. The diet will surely help improve efficiency, and we also hear that Audi is considering a plug-in hybrid model in addition to the standard gas and diesel variants.
Riding on a shared platform with the next-gen Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and the upcoming Bentley Falcon SUV, the next Audi Q7 is expected to bow in late 2014 for the 2015 model year.
Mattias Ekstr?m unleashes bonkers 600-hp Audi S1 Supercar on World RX
Sat, 26 Apr 2014Mattias Ekström doesn't need to prove anything. He's won the DTM title twice and before that the Swedish Touring Car Championship. But being a racing driver as he is, Ekström has been looking for new challenges. He's contested the Swedish Rally six times, the German Rally twice, he's driven in V8 Supercars and in NASCAR. He's even won the Race of Champions. Twice. Heck, we're surprised his long-time sponsor Red Bull hasn't let him try out one of its F1 cars. But this season it's on to a new challenge: the inaugural FIA World Rallycross Championship.
Ekström drove a Volkswagen Polo fielded by Marklund Motorsport in the Swedish rallycross round last season and came in second, but this year he's diving in head-first with his own team and his own car. His outfit EKS is hard at work preparing the new Audi S1 for competition in the World RX Championship, and will field two of them this season: one for Ekström and another for JWRC champion Pontus Tidemand.
Built to compete in the top category of the championship, the EKS Audi S1 Supercar will pack a 2.0-liter turbo four with 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive and a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds. It's expected to make its debut late in May at the World RX of Great Britain where it will have to tangle with specially prepared versions of the Citroën DS3, Ford Fiesta ST and Peugeot 208 driven by the likes of Tanner Foust, Ken Block, Jacques Villeneuve and Petter Solberg. The sole North American round will be held in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, in early August, on the same circuit that once hosted Indy Lights, ALMS, Grand-Am, Can-Am and Trans-Am races.
New Audi Quattro concept coming to Frankfurt?
Tue, 13 Aug 2013We first saw the Audi Quattro Concept at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, and since then we've been tugged this way and that by a series of rumors as to whether the car will be built or not, and whether such a car will live at the accessible or the exalted end of the cost spectrum. A report in Germany's Auto Zeitung from June restarted the fires of gossip with a report that a production version of the concept will appear at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and put it firmly in the exalted sphere.
Now, just a month from the show, Auto Bild has a similar report, sketching out an upmarket car but on a different platform. Back when we drove it, the Quattro concept was built on a spaceframe based on the RS5 platform and got its go from a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with 380 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque (the show car got 408 hp from a turbocharged five-cylinder). The June report from Auto Zeitung said this new reveal would be powered by a modified version of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the RS7 that would put out something like 650 hp. Auto Bild, on the other hand, reports that the engine will be tuned to something like 600 hp and the new concept will ride on an "enhanced" version of the A6 platform.
Both reports agree that the car we'll see will preview Audi's new design language with "tauter, more angular lines." Lightweight and exotic materials will be used in efforts to reach a supposed target weight of 1,200 kilograms (2,640 pounds), down from a target of 2,900 pounds in earlier report. Auto Bild says that Audi still hasn't decided whether to make a production version, but if they are correct about the direction of the concept, any retail offering based on it isn't going to be cheap.
