1973 BMW 2002 – Original paint, original interior

This 1973 2002 (VIN 2587661) was purchased on 13 March 1973 by Dr. Irwin Ginsberg from a BMW dealer, Endurance Motorcars, in Mount Kisko, NY.  It is unique in that it has never been repainted, not even touched up due to accident!  And the paint (code 006 Sahara) is in great shape.  Also, other than a new period-correct headliner, the interior is original and in very good condition.  No cracks or problems with the dash.  The only problems with the interior are 2 small cuts in the driver seat which I’ve tried to show in the photos.

Mechanically the car is as near perfect as it can be.  It has 47060 total miles, and has been serviced by a Certified BMW Mechanic.  Recent updates/repairs include: Metric Mechanic updated 4 speed transmission; new clutch and clutch hydraulics; new brakes and brake hydraulics; new Super Sprint exhaust; full service with fresh fluids.  The original jack and lug wrench are present in excellent condition.

The original Owner’s Handbook, with the US Supplement, the Service Record, and several other pieces of information that came with the car when new are present.  The radio is a Pioneer DEH 6300UB stereo with a removable face, a remote control, and MP3 input.

The car does have a few problems, mainly due to the age and its original state.  There are some small dents/depressions on the body work and the trim, but there is no breakage in the paint, therefore these small defects could be easily repaired by a “paintless dent repair” guy.  The only rust (and it's just surface rust) is on the lower edge of the passenger side wheel wells, as show in the photos.  There is a small stone-chip “star” in the windshield which could be repaired by the resin injection method.  The tires have good tread but should be replaced due to age.  The door-straps (what holds the door open) do not work well and could be replaced.

If you are looking for an original unmolested 2002, this is it.  I don’t think you will find a better one.  Please come drive this car – you will not be disappointed.  There is a clear Florida title in hand.

I am listing this for a friend and will refer all questions.  Questions will be answered directly by an email to cregister1@comcast.net or by calling 352-235-6757.

The winning bidder must send a $500.00 deposit to me via Paypal within 24 hours.  The remaining amount is to be paid within 7 days with cash or a cashier’s check.  I will assist with loading on your truck or trailer.  I will not assist with foreign shipping.

Thermal imagery of BMW M4 DTM pit stop is red hot

Wed, 28 May 2014

A pit stop is a pit stop, right? The race car pulls in, the crew changes the tires, pumps in some fuel, maybe swaps out a busted body panel or squeegees the windshield, and off it goes for another heat. Only pit stops have become the focus of news lately for a number of reasons, whether it's because of mishaps (like the ones that prompted F1 to ban mid-race refueling), new time records (due largely to said ban) or interesting new ways to film the fast-paced action.
A few weeks ago we brought you footage of an IndyCar pit stop filmed from multiple angles courtesy of Google Glass. Now BMW has released a brief clip of one of its M4 DTM racers coming in for fresh rubber, all filmed by infrared camera. Its the kind of technology BMW uses to help optimize its German touring cars for competition, and now the Bavarian outfit has released some footage for fans to enjoy.
The resulting thermal imagery gives you an idea of how hot the car runs (and where the heat is emanating from), how warm they get the fresh rubber before they get it onto the car, and what kind of temperatures the pit crew is subjected to. Look closely enough in the 25-second video below and you'll even see the heat sputtering out of the exhaust pipes as the M4 downshifts into its pit box. (Just don't try adjusting your speakers, the clip is without audio.)

The importance of Angel Eyes, Ventiports and four round taillights

Sun, 01 Sep 2013

Just the other day, we told you about how Lincoln isn't really a luxury brand, according to Ford's head design man, J Mays. His argument was that Lincoln lacked the unique DNA to differentiate it from the rest of the market, although the arrival of the MKZ is beginning to change that. Now, we have this video from Autoline Detroit, where Jim Hall, an analyst for 2953 Analytics who was quoted in yesterday's Lincoln story, explains the influence of certain styling cues and how they impact the brands.
Using BMW (Angel Eyes) and Buick (Ventiports) as examples for small, simple touches that serve to distinguish the brand's vehicles on the road, Hall then points out how changing trademark styling features, as Chevrolet has done on the new Corvette Stingray, can hurt the vehicle's public perception. Take a look at the full video below for an interesting dive into what these styling features mean to their individual brands.

2014 BMW 328i xDrive Gran Turismo

Thu, 24 Apr 2014

"The Ultimate Driving Machine" has been BMW's tagline for nearly 40 years. Launched in the 1970s, the marketing campaign was a stroke of genius by ad firm Ammirati & Puris, as the phrase helped differentiate the imported Bavarian cars from their fellow European rivals by subtly pointing out that Mercedes-Benz and Audi were offering luxury models, while BMW was selling sporty and youthful driving dynamics. The campaign worked - some would argue that stands among the most effective ad campaigns ever - and countless Baby Boomers embraced the brand's fun-to-drive image by taking delivery of the company's new models.
BMW still boasts that its vehicles are "The Ultimate Driving Machine" four decades later, but the brand is very different today. It offered just a few model lines in the mid-1970s, and only a handful of vehicles within. In 2014, the automaker offers an exhaustive range comprised of nearly a dozen lines with almost 50 different models. To survive and thrive, BMW has decided it must massively broaden its appeal.
One of the latest arrivals to BMW's ever-growing stable is the 2014 3 Series Gran Turismo. The five-door hatchback is best thought of as a smaller version of the company's 5 Series Gran Turismo built on stretched 3 Series platform that, in the case of this test car, shares the running gear of the 328i xDrive sedan. On paper, the five-passenger vehicle checks all the proper boxes with regards to performance, utility and economy. But does this family-focused 3 Series still deliver driving dynamics that qualify it for the title of Ultimate Driving Machine?
