This auction is for a 1998 E36 BMW 318ti Club Sport. It is a 5 spd manual transmission with a posi rear end. The Exterior color is Hellrot (red), with a black leather/cloth interior. The seats are leather bolstered with a cloth insert. The interior is in real nice shape. The dash is crack free, and the seats are nice, slight wear on the drivers bolster. The drivers floor mat is a little grungy from wear, but the original carpet underneath is nice. I am the second owner of the car. It has never been in an accident, and has all of the original body panels.I bought it with high 80's mileage and have been using it for my commuter car. It needs work to get it road worthy. I recently split the plastic heater tube hose underneath the intake plenum, but had it towed before it overheated. The check engine light is on (catalyst efficiency), and the air bags do not work. Up to this incident, this has been a trouble free vehicle. The headliner droops, and that is about it. Some things, I've done along the way is two clutches (one because I neglected to replace the little plastic/nylon pivot) and figured I might as well refresh things again while I am in there. I've done the water pump and thermostat and all of the hoses forward of the plastic heater pipe. Alternator was new last year. Starter new about two years ago. Headlights and foglights are new Depot glass units about 3 years ago, and have plastic covering on them since installed. I change the oil every 3500 miles. It will need to be towed to get it to your facility (at your own expense). I also have another 318ti manual tranny parts car I will sell to the purchaser of this ti if they wish for an additional cost (not included in this auction). It would make a great auto-x car, race car, or be a fun car for someone who likes to tinker. I just do not have time to work on this car at this time. Also comes with complete owners manuals and even the radio code card. If you would like to come see the car, I do not have a problem with that, but please schedule an appointment first. I am not entertaining any trades. Please ask any questions before bidding. This is sold in "as is" condition with no expressed or implied warranties. If you need any more info, feel free to contact me. Thanks so much for your interest!

BMW 2 Series caught uncovered during shoot
Thu, 16 May 2013Before we know it, the BMW 1 Series will be no more in the United States. Well, sort of. The current six-year-old coupe and convertible will be replaced by the fancy new 2 Series you see here, spotted completely uncovered during a photo shoot, with the 1 Series nomenclature being reserved for the hatchback and GT models that might not ever make it Stateside.
The roofline of the new 2 Series doesn't appear to have to changed all that much from the current 1 Series coupe, but the front and rear fascias have indeed been smoothed out. (Truth time: As much as your author adores the 1 Series, he's always found its rear end to be, well, weird.) It looks good, seen here in M235i guise, with large wheels, slimmer headlamps and large air intakes on either side of the front fascia.
The 2 Series is expected to come to the States, likely in M235i and 228i variants, though rumors suggest that we won't get a non-M 235i model. The M235i is expected to be powered by the N55 turbocharged inline-six that we currently enjoy in the 335i sedan, producing something like 320 horsepower. The 228i, unsurprisingly, should use the 2.0-liter turbo-four from the 328i, making around 240 hp. Both engines will almost certainly employ eight-speed automatic transmissions and six-speed manuals.
Researchers halfway to cutting carbon fiber costs by 90%
Wed, 15 Oct 2014Carbon fiber has been utilized for decades to build racecars, as a means to cut weight while maintaining strength. But until recently, the space-age material has been largely absent from the street on anything but supercars because of the expense to use it. Recently, BMW signaled a major shift in that trend when it starting using carbon fiber reinforced plastic panels on the i3 and i8. This relatively small scale start might be just the beginning; the German company believes that a breakthrough to inexpensively manufacture the lightweight stuff is just on the horizon.
MAI Carbon Cluster Management GmbH counts BMW, Audi, Airbus, the German government and many other organizations as supporters, and it's researching how to make carbon fiber cheaper to produce, according to Automotive News Europe. The company thinks it can reduce costs by 90 percent in the near future. "We've certainly reached a halfway point on our cost-cutting target for suitable carbon-fiber parts," said project head Klaus Drechsler to Automotive News Europe.
Unfortunately, it isn't entirely clear just what MAI Carbon is doing to make such a huge leap possible. However, a recent post on the company's website talks about a new form a carbon fiber using a thermoplastic matrix that could be cured in less than three minutes. That's compared to about 90 minutes in the traditional process with an autoclave.
BMW i8 fully revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut
Tue, 10 Sep 2013It may be early in the morning here in the US, but in Germany, the first day of the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is in full swing. BMW took advantage of the early start and showed off its long-awaited i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar, a two-plus-two, swan-wing-doored coupe, to the Frankfurt crowd.
We drove a BMW i8 prototype back in August, so many of the things we're reading today are clarifications on our initial suspicions or speculations. Underhood sits a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine. On its own, it churns out a respectable 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is then channeled to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor, meanwhile, sends 131 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed automatic to the front wheels.
With all-wheel drive at its disposal, the total system power sits at 362 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, and allows the i8 to scamper to 62 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. That excellent performance is offset by an estimated fuel economy figure of 94 miles per gallon, though, making this a fast and efficient vehicle. Charging is impressively fast on the i8, with a full charge coming from a 110-volt outlet in under four hours. A BMW Charging Station will trim the charge time down to 1.5 hours.
