I'm selling my summer toy - extremely fun, low-mileage E36 convertible. Why? Well, I bought it from my colleague when his son turned 17 and got his driver license. Now I'm in the same boat. The car has to go :(  With manual transmission, lightweight body (3,296 lbs.) and silky-smooth inline 6,  the car is as much fun as a Miata, but way more practical and luxurious.  It also feels refreshingly solid - none of that plasticky feel of recent BMWs with their thin doors, electrical steering and throttle by wire, riding on hard-as-brick run-flats.

The car's condition is pristine (at 20K miles it has to be). This BMW has always been a garage queen, being driven only 3-4 months a year and spending the rest of year under protective cover (the cover is included, you can see it on one of the pictures). I doubt this car has seen any rain at all - at least in my hands it didn't - engine and underbody are all shining.

I have all the original books and the window sticker ($38,670 in 1998,  $55,250 in today's money). I've installed a Pioneer MP3/USB player, the original tape player will be included. There is also a CD-changer in the trunk.
The car has a 100 Club of Connecticut shield attached (hundredclubofct.org) - it is my advice to keep it where it is.

After I bought the car in 2010, I've also bought:
  • Wind deflector (designed by Paul Klee)
  • New set of tires (driven about 6,000 miles on them)
  • New battery (still on warranty)
  • Dinan front tower brace (sharper turn-ins)
  • New engine and cabin air filters.
  • Oil has been changed every 12 months (every 2K miles), changed intake and return hoses for power steering. Local BMW dealer found everything else in perfect shape.
Exhaustive list of "issues" - making sure I list every imperfection, however minor:
  • remote key doesn't work (dead key fob battery/code erased when replaced car's battery?) - never bothered to check - top is mostly open anyway and the car is driven in a safe neighborhood
  • scratch/ding on plastic rear bumper (left rear corner - can see on pictures). About 1.5x1 inch.
  • leather on seats looks/feels brand new, save for small hairline scratch on driver seat - depicted below
THAT IS ALL!!! HAPPY BIDDING! …. OR you can buy it for $12,500 right away (and get practically new car for almost 80% off its cost when new)
The car is also selling locally, so I reserve a right to cancel the auction if any of my neighbors knock on my door holding a $12.5K check.

I'm also willing to ship worldwide (a bit of a hassle, but that's okay). Buyer pays shipping charges, of course.
I'm still riding my BMW while I can, will drive to upstate NY this weekend, so expect a few hundred more miles on the odometer.

I'll try my best answering any questions you might have. Thank you for checking my auction.

The 2014 Alpina B4 Bi-Turbo Cabrio powers up luxury and speed

Tue, 04 Mar 2014

The BMW specialists at Alpina know how to exploit a niche when they see one. With the BMW M4 still not technically official, it saw the need for a higher performance four-seat convertible than the 435i 'vert. Enter the new B4 Bi-Turbo Cabrio that is debuting at the Geneva Motor Show.
The European-exclusive model takes BMW's 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-6 and massages it up to 410 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, which is less power but more twist than the M4 would give buyers. Alpina's tend to be built more as quick, luxurious grand tourers, and the B4 Bi-Turbo gets is no different with an adaptive sport suspension and an eight-speed automatic. Plus it wears the classic pinstripes and 21-spoke wheels that are the brand's design hallmarks.
While the added weight for the convertible means that the Cabrio takes 4.5 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour, about a half-second slower than the coupe, at the moment it is the only way to get this kind of performance in a BMW convertible. Orders for the convertible open in March in Europe and prices in Germany start at 74,800 euros ($102,878 at today's conversion rates).

2014 BMW 4 Series drops its top, priced from $48,750*

Sat, 12 Oct 2013

BMW will debut its new 2014 4 Series Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, and after seeing plenty of spy shots and, most recently, some leaked images, we now have all the official details. To no one's surprise, the 4 Series convertible is, essentially, a topless version of BMW's new-for-2014 4 Series coupe, and will be offered in the United States in the same 428i and 435i guises.
On the base end, that means the 428i Convertible arrives with the company's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, good for 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, and available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. BMW says the 428i will sprint to 60 miles per hour in a respectable 6.2 seconds. For folks in need of more thrust, BMW will happily sell you a 435i Convertible, available only with rear-wheel drive, powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six that produces 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of twist. Hitting 60 mph in the 435i will take roughly five and a half seconds with the standard eight-speed auto. Curiously, BMW did not mention anything about a six-speed manual transmission for either model, so looks like this droptop might be an auto-only affair. We've contacted BMW for confirmation, so we'll keep you posted.
Like the 3 Series Convertible it replaces, the 4 Series uses a three-piece folding hardtop configuration, and BMW says that added sound deadening reduces audible wind noise by about two decibels. Folding the automatic roof takes just 20 seconds, and can be done at speeds up to roughly 11 mph. For chilly, top-down driving (something we're big fans of), there are now three-temperature neck warmers for the front seats - just like what Mercedes-Benz offers with its AirScarf system.

BMW i3 gets official worldwide

Mon, 29 Jul 2013

Even though we recently drove a near-production version of the BMW i3, the car still wore light exterior and interior camouflage. Today, BMW took off that little bit of camo and made a big announcement: The i3 will go on sale in the US for $41,350 in the second quarter of 2014. That does not include any state or federal incentives that could lower the price or the $925 destination fee. The i3 will debut with three trim levels, which BMW is referring to as Worlds: Mega (standard in the US), Giga and Tera.
The BMW i3 is chock-full of new technology afforded by its design as an EV from the start of development, which has resulted in a vehicle layout unique to the i3. BMW has named it LifeDrive architecture, and it features the Life Module and the Drive Module. The Life Module is the i3's pillar-less passenger cell, which is the first mass-produced monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The tougher-than-steel material is also 30-percent lighter than aluminum, which contributes to the i3's relatively light weight of 2,700 pounds (preliminary US figure) and, in turn, increases its energy efficiency. Expect more of this technology to find its way into future BMWs.
The Drive Module, a 100-percent aluminum chassis mounted under the Life Module, houses everything that makes the i3 go. It includes the 22-kilowatt, 450-pound lithium ion battery mounted as centrally as possible, and provides power to a rear-mounted electric motor that turns the rear wheels. With 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque from zero rpm, the single-gear i3 can accelerate from 0-30 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and 0-60 mph in about 7.0 seconds, but it has a top speed of only 93 mph. BMW says the i3 has a real-world EV range of 80-100 miles, and the standard charger can fill the battery in three hours. Opt for the SAE DC Combo Fast Charger and 30 minutes is all it takes for a full charge; 20 minutes will bump the battery to 80 percent. For customers who have range anxiety, BMW gives them the option to install a 34-hp, 650cc two-cylinder generator as a range extender for the electric drive system.
