This generation of Eldorado is differentiated further from its E-body Oldsmobile Toronado sibling by the fact that it was available through 1976 as a convertible, as well as two-door hardtop. The car grew in size and weight, but the 500 Cad motor lost horsepower every year due to ever tightening emission standards and crude emissions equipment. Performance was dulled but not ruined, though fuel economy sank to new lows. Interestingly, the 1973 Cadillac Eldorado convertible was chosen as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car for 1973. 566 of these were built, 33 of which were used on the track and the remaining cars were sold (one for each dealership). The final 200 1976 Eldorado convertibles were designated as Bicentennial Specials, colored in white with red and blue pinstripes. In 1976, the Biarritz name once again surfaced as an options package, including a brushed stainless roof appliqu'e which mirrored that of the original four-door 1957-1958 Eldorado Broughams

Cadillac's Euro reboot may have implications for US models, sales

Fri, 11 Apr 2014

Firmly on the comeback trail in the US, Cadillac is still trying to get out of the starting blocks in Europe. At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Cadillac' senior execs revealed plans to grow the brand's presence in a luxury market dominated by the big three German marques, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
GM President Dan Ammann says he sees "enormous" potential for Cadillac globally.
Over the past 20 years, the General Motors premium nameplate has tried and failed multiple times to break into the European market. This time around, Cadillac recognizes that progress will be modest at best, and depends on specific changes to models, some of which may impact the brand's US lineup. Planned new sales tactics in Europe may also impact the way Cadillac does business on this side of the pond.

Akerson says Cadillac will get a larger sedan within two years

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

It seems that during a recent affair showing off the 2014 Cadillac CTS, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson confirmed reports regarding a new Cadillac flagship sedan. According to USA Today, which Akerson was visiting, he said that a sedan larger than the XTS would debut within the next two years.
This matches up with what we heard earlier in the month about a Cadillac model that will go up against the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class (not a pricier, low-volume sedan also discussed in that article). But this is the first time a high-profile executive name has been attributed to such a report, and the first time a broad timeframe has been mentioned. This article adds that the unnamed car will be rear-, and all-wheel drive with a platform "loosely based" on the new CTS, with styling closer to that car than recent Cadillac concept vehicles. The XTS will continue production of course, as well.

Cadillac launching crossover-heavy product offensive

Fri, 06 Sep 2013

Utilizing information provided by Cadillac suppliers, Reuters says that Cadillac is preparing two more crossovers that will bow after its current product initiative is complete. According to the report, a year after the next SRX arrives in 2016, a pair of CUVs will be unveiled that will bracket it in size, and they'll be headed for the US and Chinese markets.
That is years away, though. For now, the company's attentions are on the nearly here CTS and ELR range-extended coupe, the next Escalade SUV (shown above), an ATS coupe, and the range-topper that will sit above the XTS. That, and possibly an even more impressive range-topper that promises to be the mean and majestic super-luxe unicorn Cadillac we've been dreaming about for more than a decade now.
In response to the issue of how German crossovers might be having an impact on Cadillac's future plans, a company source said - rightly, we think - "we don't need to duplicate the Germans." That doesn't mean, however, that it can't wade deeper into a market segment that the Germans are making a ton of money in. In fact, and since everyone is doing it, we'd be surprised if Cadillac didn't, even if it won't happen for another four years.
