This is a very rare 1973 Chevelle SS 454 station wagon that belonged to the late Rick. I purchased it in Driggs, Idaho from his wife, who had moved out of state. From what I can tell only about 800-900 of these were made by GM and probably only a few have survived to this date. From his wife and a friend I have collected the following information. The car was driven, but the engine was going bad, so it was parked in a garage for several years with the intention of replacing the engine. A few years ago it was driven to a yard and covered with a tarp, and there it sat until his wife finally decided to sell. All tires were still inflated and the car was on blocks. The transmission fluid is clear and red and does not smell burnt. The engine oil is black, not brown, and not like sludge. The antifreeze is still in the radiator and is still green. The engine turns over freely by hand at the flywheel. It was last registered about 1994. The vehicle looks completely original. The exterior has a few rust spots, a few dents, and a bad bondo repair, but overall is in pretty good condition, nothing major. The interior seats need to be reupholstered. The floor pan looks OK. The door panels look pretty good for the age of the car, could probably keep these. The headliner looks good, but is brittle and dried out and should be replaced. The rear facing third row seat is in pretty good condition. The odometer shows about 79000, but I would guess that it has turned over. Rick had collected some replacement trim parts which will be included in the sale. The air conditioner compressor was removed and is with the car. This is a major restoration project.

Chevrolet donates 300 vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders
Thu, 28 Feb 2013Super Storm Sandy took out a lot of automobiles in its path of destruction through the Northeast last October. The number surpassed 250,000 at last count, and a few of those were owned by Chevrolet - cars either sitting on dealership lots or waiting at port to be shipped off. Rendered unsellable by the water damage inflicted by Sandy, these vehicles were facing the crusher. But Chevy didn't send them there.
Instead, Chevy had a better idea: It will be donating 300 of these vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders at Guardian Centers in Perry, GA. Chevy is the official automotive partner of Guardian Centers, which is an 830-acre facility that trains first responders in disaster preparedness. Junked cars are practically a consumable commodity there, where a full-size cityscape simulator gives trainees an entire urban center in which to train for all sorts of rescue operations and disaster scenarios.
Chevy says its particular vehicles will be used "in conjunction with role players for wide area searches, traffic congestion in emergency situations, counter terrorism, public order and mass casualty exercises." While grim scenarios all, we're certainly glad there are people out there preparing for the unexpected. While a zombie apocalypse isn't officially on the list of potential disasters to prepare for, when the virus hits, we'll be hot-footing it to Perry, GA to hang with these guys and gals.
Feds open investigation into Chevy Express, Ford Freestar rust issues
Wed, 28 Dec 2011'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.
Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car
Wed, 20 Feb 2013We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....
