Up for auction is my '65 Corsa daily driver, all-year round.  NO RESERVE.  140hp runs very well, no issues at all, starts immediately.  No hot-start issues.   4sp shifts very well, no issues.  Clutch is beginning to slip, my estimate is that it will need repalcement in 5K miles.  Throwout bearing and pilot bushing making no noises.

Oddities:  No radio, has been replaced with compass and exterior temp display (see picture)
3.08 rear axle.  Stock is 3.57, so this car gets exceptional mileage.
Oil filter has been relocated and uses a (very available) FORD V8 filter.
rear defroster.
Window antenna for the radio you can add.  Speakers in rear deck.
Front disc brakes
Buick 14" rims.

The good:
Engine is outstanding, ride is good.  Drifts a bit and a slight shimmy at 40 mph.  Front end parts are less than two years old.  Suspect steering box could use attention.
Interior is excellent.  Door panels near-perfect, seats excellent, are from a 92 Alero.  Leather, driver's is power.  Almost 16 inches front-back travel.  Both sides recline.  Headliner excellent.  Dash pad perfect.  Steering wheel had no cracks.  Underside is very good.  Heater works fine.  All glass is perfect, front and rear bumpers excellent.  Stainless trim good to very good.  Entire interior floorpan was PORd when the car was painted (8 years ago).

The (less) good:
Body is awful.  All the wheel well lips are rusting, as is the front fenders and rear lower quarters.  Typical Corvair bottom-of-windshield rust.  Doors good, not great.  Typical kick-vent leakage after a heavy rain.

Replaced within the last 2 years:
all front and rear suspension bushings
ball joints, upper and lower
front springs
u-joints (x4)
fuel pump (stock style, not electric)
gas tank
alternator (one-wire, internally regulated)
primary and secondary carbs
shift tube bushings
heater hoses
rear springs (2 months ago)
muffler u-pipes
side view mirror

Following are inoperative:
windshield washer (was electric)
speedometer

following are known issues:
body rust
occasional front-end shimmy (probably steering box)
slipping clutch, noticeable under full throttle in 4th gear.

Conquest and controversy conclude the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona [spoilers]

Sun, 26 Jan 2014

If you don't wish to know who won the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona, you should avert your eyes right now. We'll even give you a double-space to skedaddle...
For those of you still with us, the first race in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) is done, but the discussions about it certainly won't end for a while. Daytona Prototypes claimed the first four overall places, the top spot taken by the No. 5 Action Express Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi, Sebastien Bourdain and Burt Friselle. The 16th and final caution of the race bunched the field up for an eight-minute sprint to the flag, so the first place getter finished just 1.4 seconds ahead of the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Dallara-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Max Angelelli. Third place went to Brian Friselle in the No. 9 Action Express Chevrolet Corvette DP, 20 seconds down. Chevrolet power hasn't taken the overall win since 2003, eleven years later it scores a one-two-three-four. The No. 6 Muscle Milk/Pickett Racing ORECA-Nissan 03 scored fifth place, the top LMP2 finisher.
The Prototype Challenge class win went to the No. 54 CORE Autosport team of Colin Braun, Jon Bennett, Mark Wilkins and James Gue.

Veyron and C7 Corvette join cast of Transformers 4

Wed, 29 May 2013

Like the Fast & Furious franchise, the Michael Bay-directed series of Transformers movies has become known as much for its bad acting as its impressive lineup of cars. As filming just started for Transformers 4, Bay's website has confirmed two new cars for the next installment as well as a makeover for everyone's favorite tractor trailer hero, Optimus Prime.
Joining the cast of T4 are a "race-inspired" Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. While Bay's website did not supply names for either car, Bugatti is reporting on its Facebook page that the Veyron will join the Autobots. Speaking of the good guys, top Autobot Optimus Prime is getting an all-new body based on a Western Star with a gaudy appearance that was seemingly inspired by Trick My Truck - right down to the six smoke stacks and side pipes!

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....
