Up for sale is my 1958 Chevy pickup, super solid as the photos show, very little rust overall, see detailed pictures of the bottom of the fenders and cab corners, and inside the cab where the step is and lower cab mounts. These are typically the places where these trucks rust and this one is very solid. It is probably the most solid one we have ever had! As a friend of mine who does restoration on antique vehicles said to me, "It is easier to start with a relatively rust free vehicle and pay a little more for it, than to try and save a few dollars and buy one that is rusty. There is just so much work that goes into fixing a rusty one and making it right. It is a pleasure to restore one that is not rusty and one in which the bolts come off with a wrench instead of a cutting torch". He makes a very valid point! On this truck the frame is virtually rust free. The previous owner even cleaned it down to the bare metal. (see pics). The bed has had the typical treatment where a piece of plywood was placed over the existing wood (what is left of it). The truck does not appear to have been in any collisions.

This truck has had disc brakes added up front and has been lowered 3 inches up front as well. The hubs are 5 lug upfront and 6 lug in the rear. The hubs up front can be changed out to have 6 lugs. Also a new front axle was placed under the truck. The truck stops very well. We have taken a short video of the truck. The previous owner said that the front end should probably have an alignment since it was only "eyed" up. But you can see from the video that the truck runs and drives. It has the inline 6 cylinder with the 4 speed on the floor transmission (which I prefer over the 3 speed on the column). Transmission shifts well in all gears, and all the synchros are fine, clutch is fine, rear end is fine. The engine puffs a little blue smoke on start up. There is also another engine (a 250 cubic inch) included with the truck which is sitting in the bed. It turns over but I have not done a compression check on it. The engine has good oil pressure while it is running and runs cool. Inside the truck, the amp gauge works as does the oil pressure and temp gauge. The speedometer and odometer do not work. The windshield wipers work as do the lights. The dash is in good shape and has not been cut to add a radio. The windshield has some scratches on it from the path of the windshield wipers but no cracks. The side windows in the doors have cracks in both sides. The cab is in good general condition all the way around with very few dings and dents. The doors close well and the gaps are even all the way around. The hood closes well but the hinges will need to be adjusted so that it is even (we had this same problem on a 1959 Apache that we restored and the reason the hood doesn't fit even with the body line is that the hinges need to be adjusted!). There is a hole on the front of the left fender where it looks like a piece of farm machinery went through it. This is what the previous owner said. We recently restored and brought to a Barrett Jackson Auction a 1959 Chevrolet Apache and it did very well. There is a ton of interest in Chevy pickups from 1947 to 1959. Parts are readily available from LMC or Classic Parts. We saw nicely restored examples bringing in the $20,000-$30,000 range depending on options and quality of restoration. This truck can be restored the way it is, or a V8 can be dropped in it for a mild custom. Whichever you do, it will be a sought after truck!

Here is a short video of a test drive of the truck:

GM looks to combat high theft rates on SUVs with added tech

Tue, 24 Dec 2013

The Cadillac Escalade has been at or near the top of most-stolen and insurance-loss lists for more than seven years, until it dropped to number six earlier this year. In 2011 it was fitted with a host of new security features to address its easy-to-override features and that has brought the number of thefts down, but when eight of the ten most stolen rides are large SUVs from General Motors, no one will argue that something else needs to be done.
Thus, GM has fitted this same theft-deterring tech to the 2015 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon. The Suburban and Tahoe will get the steering lock that the Escalade and Yukon already get, plus bolted-down third-row seats to deter thefts like this, stronger door lock cylinders and shields, and side-cut keys to inhibit picking.
Additional security measures in a Theft Protection Package can be purchased for $395, consisting of sensors on the greenhouse glass and interior, an incline/tilt sensor and added "key control systems" to make it more difficult for the men in black balaclavas to steal what you bought.

Hot Wheels' Twitter-enabled vending machine coughs up free Camaro diecasts

Wed, 27 Feb 2013

There are still plenty of companies that haven't gotten the whole social media thing down pat yet, but Hot Wheels isn't one of them. During the recent Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Hot Wheels created a lot of buzz for itself by using a vending machine filled with Chevrolet Camaro models, but instead of money to get the cars, show attendees just had to use Twitter.
To get the free car, people were asked to send a tweet to Hot Wheels Canada saying what they liked about the new Hot Wheels Edition Camaro, and including the #ChevyCIAS hashtag. This seemed to be a popular marketing tool, too, as AdWeek reports that the @HotWheelsCanada account more than tripled in followers during the course of the 10-day show. Looking ahead, this could open up even more innovative marketing possibilities using social media.
Check out the video posted below to watch how it works, and while the auto show has ended and the free-car giveaway has too, we're almost certain that some of the 1,500 freebies will make their way onto eBay.

Are you the 2014 Corvette Grand Sport?

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

When are stripes more than just stripes? Follow up question: Is the product development team at Chevrolet really cocky enough to hide the next C7 Corvette variant in plain sight? This very recently spotted, and ostensibly obscured C7 asks a lot more questions than it answers, but there's at least some evidence to support that it might be the next Corvette Grand Sport.
The first and most obvious tip-off that something is up with this 'Vette revolves around those silver stripes. Obviously the stripes themselves don't necessarily denote a new model. However, when Chevy recently launched its "colorizer" website for the Stingray, there was no provision made for racing stripes - solid colors only.
Grand Sport exhibit number two is actually an incriminating lack of badges. The production Corvettes we've seen to date have all carried Stingray badges on their fenders, just behind the vent. The car seen in these images has no such badges, which is an intriguing omission on an car that looks like a production-spec vehicle otherwise.
