Up for sale today is a 1959 Chevy flatbed 1 ton truck. Engine developed a rod knock, decided to pull the engine and completely rebuild, did the pulling part but got distracted with other projects and priorities, that was 5 years ago..... This truck started life in Montana as a U S Forest Service truck, it has spent the last 40 years here in dry Nevada, it has been owned by two different families and the federal government in it's life. It has 144,000 miles on it and is overall in good condition considering the age. There is some rust in the usual areas, the eyebrows, hinge pockets and fenders. The cab corners are in surprisingly good condition, they are often rusted out and a real pain to repair. The replacement eyebrows are readily available from several sources, I have had good luck with Grumpy's, they are online. The engine ran well without smoke or any problems till the rod started making noise. I could have pulled the pan and fixed the rod bearing but figured it would be nice to have hardened valve seats, etc. The drivers side window needs replaced; flat glass is super easy and inexpensive, probably less than $40 from your local glass shop. The windshield has a chip, repairable, so the windshield  doesn't have to be replaced, just repaired. There is a dent on the door, another on the passenger fender behind the bumper. The front bumper is thrashed; my boys, when they were idiot teenagers, got stuck and thought it was a good idea to pull it out with a choker... The seat was redone about 25,000 miles ago, it could use freshening but the springs and stuffing are good. Headliner ( solid)  is in great condition. There is a hole in the roof from the original USFS radio antenna. A cork sufficed for years to plug it. One tire is flat but seems to hold air long enough to allow loading. The overall appearance is good, the truck always gets a lot of comments. Please look at the pictures and ask questions. The pictures are part of the description, please refer to them to help ascertain condition. Thanks for your interest and good luck!

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....

Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war

Sun, 30 Dec 2012

A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?

800k car names trademarked globally, suddenly alphanumerics seem reasonable

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

What's in a name? This cliched phrase probably gets tossed out at every marketing meeting that happens when a new car gets its nomenclature. We know the answer, though: everything. The name of a car has all the potential to make or break it with fickle customers that are more conscious than ever about what their purchases say about them.
That's giving headaches to marketing folks across the automotive industry. "It's tough. In 1985 there were about 75,000 names trademarked in the automotive space. Today there are 800,000," Chevrolet's head of marketing, Russ Clark, told Automotive News. Infiniti's president, Johan de Nysschen, echoed Clark's sentiment, saying, "The truth of the matter is, across the world, there is hardly a name or a letter that hasn't already been claimed by one car manufacturer or another. You can go through the alphabet - A, B, C and so forth - and you will quickly see that almost all available letters are taken."
What has that left automakers to do? Get creative. In the case of Infiniti, it made the controversial move to bring all of its cars' names into a new scheme, classifying them as Q#0 for cars and QX#0 for SUVs and crossovers. So the Infiniti G, which was available as the G25 and G37, is now the Q50. The FX37 and FX50 are now the QX70.
