Model Overview

Hyundai is aiming for the premium luxury market with 2011's Equus. It's a brand-new sedan and a brand-new segment for Hyundai. The Equus is a V8-powered large sedan akin to BMW's 7-series and Lexus LS. The Equus is powered by a 385-horsepower V8 connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The rear-wheel drive car uses adaptive air suspension to provide a soft, comfortable ride that automatically adapts to road conditions. The Equus also offers a "Sport" mode which tightens the suspension response and remaps transmission shift points and shift speed.The exterior of the Equus indicates Hyundai's lofty aspirations. Styling cues from both the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS are evident, as are smooth, understated lines and a prominent grille. One thing that's not prominent is the Hyundai logo--the company may still be trying to shake their economy-car image. Standard 19-inch wheels come shod with low-profile 40-series tires. HID headlamps are standard and come with LED turn signals and fog lamps. Inside, Hyundai hit all of the luxury car bullet points. An audiophile surround audio system by Lexicon has an astounding 17 speakers and iPod input. Navigation and Bluetooth are also standard equipment. The driver's seat is 12-way power-adjustable and both front seats are heated and cooled. The driver can even enjoy a standard integrated massage system. The interior is clad completely in leather, including the dash. There's wood on the dash as well, and the headliner is made of Alcantara suede."Smart" cruise control and proximity-based keyless entry are included as are power sunshades and a front and rear park-assist system with rearview camera. The Equus also comes with a tire pressure monitor and a lane-departure system too.Safety equipment is a necessary component within the luxury segment, and the Equus doesn't disappoint. Electronic stability control and traction control are included as are an automatic vehicle stability system and anti-lock brakes. Airbags are standard, of course, and include the usual front-impact but also include side-curtains, seat-mounted side-impact and there's one for the driver's knees as well. Step up to the Ultimate trim, and it includes a rear-seat entertainment system, impressive rear seats that power-recline, are heated and cooled and massage the legs and back of the occupants. A forward-facing cornering camera is included, as is a power trunk lid and a refrigerated rear console.There are no factory options available, but it's hard to imagine what else a potential buyer might want to equip the Equus with--it's an amazing luxury value and a very-well equipped entry in the full-size luxury sedan segment for Hyundai.

First 2014 Hyundai Equus shipment adrift in Pacific Ocean

To all you Hyundai dealers and customers eager to plunk your posteriors into the broad, leather-lined seats of the redesigned 2014 Equus, we have some bad news: Your ship hasn't come in - literally. According to USA Today, a Korean freighter with the first 61 examples of the luxury sedan packed away in its belly has lost engine power in the western Pacific Ocean, and is adrift.
The ship, Morning Spruce, has apparently been without power for several days and is floating in the Sea of Okhotsk. It isn't clear when it will be repaired or reach US shores to divulge its contents. As a result of the wandering Spruce, Hyundai has reportedly had to reschedule some of its planned marketing efforts for the new model.
The 2014 Equus receives a suite of changes inside and out, including freshened styling, revamped center stack controls, a new instrument cluster and additional tech. Underneath, the rear-drive sedan gets a reworked suspension and a new sport mode to ease some of its nautical-by-nature handling. The 5.0-liter Tau V8 and eight-speed transmission - updates for 2012 - stay the course for 2014.

John Krafcik stepping down as Hyundai CEO, replaced by VP of sales

Hyundai Motor America has announced that its affable president and CEO, John Krafcik, will be stepping down from his post on January 1, at the completion of his contract. He'll be replaced by the current executive vice president of sales, David Zuchowski.
Krafcik has helmed Hyundai through a product renaissance that's seen the Korean automaker go from budget afterthought to household name in less than a decade, launching stylish new models and expanding into new markets. "On behalf of Hyundai Motor Company, we sincerely thank John for his visionary leadership and relentless pursuit of customer satisfaction, which has driven Hyundai's record growth over the past five years," said Im Tak Uk, the COO and executive vice president of HMA's parent company, Hyundai Motor Company.
"It's been a sincere privilege and honor to lead Hyundai Motor America over the past five years, and I am confident that with Dave's succession, our brand will continue to expand and thrive for years to come," said Krafcik in a Hyundai press release, available below. "We have many of the best and brightest employees in the business coupled with a committed and talented dealer network that will continue to pay dividends."

Hyundai sued in Korea over inflated fuel economy claims

Hyundai remains in hot water in its home market after the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport alleged that the country's largest automaker, along with Ssangyong, misstated fuel economy numbers on some of its crossovers. Now, though, the country's consumers are going after Hyundai, with a lawsuit from 1,500 Santa Fe owners.
The suit was filed in Seoul Central District Court by a firm called Yeyul. Its spokesperson, Kim Woong, said the suit was a sign that angry consumers could go after the manufacturer if they're wronged by a company's product.
"It is essential that as many affected consumers as possible take part in this lawsuit to show not just the carmaker but the rest of the companies in Korea that you can get a red card if you mess with your customers," Kim told Bloomberg.
