Up for bids is a 1979 Jeep Cherokee Chief Sport. It has the original AMC 360 V8 with a 2 barrel carb. This thing runs great with no engine noise or smoke and starts everytime. It is obvious that it has been rebuilt at some point but not sure when. The transmission shifts good with no issues and the 4 wheel drive works good in all ranges. It is all time 4 wheel drive with the quadra trac selector in the glove box and a lever under the seat to lock it into low range. It has dana 44 diferentials front and rear and they are both in good shape. It has had new u-joints installed in the rear driveshaft. I have the new ones for the front driveshaft but just never put them in because there still tight. It has had a new u-joint installed in the front right axle as well as new bearings. The frame is in good shape with only surface rust, no rot or holes. As far as the body goes the outside is in decent shape but around the back wheel wells the inner and outer panels have rusted apart and someone has sprayed foam from the inside to seal it up. I guess it works but if your wanting to restore it the foam will need to be removed and the metal welded back. The window in the tailgate works(although someone wired up new switches for it) but the tailgate hinge on the passenger side has came loose. It will still open and close you just have to play with it a little bit. The tires are 31x10.5 and in good shape with right around half tread and they are all wore evenly. This jeep is by no means a show car but you can jump in it and drive it wherever you want to (on or off road). If you have any questions on something I may have forgot to mention feel free to ask. If you have little or no feedback contact me before bidding or your bid will be cancelled. Thanks for looking and good luck

Gilles defends 2014 Jeep Cherokee design as "very contemporary"

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Following the forced-hand introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, there has definitely been a mix of responses revolving around everything from its design to the return of the legendary nameplate. As evidence of this, just check out the 1,000+ comments in our article last week and some of the many opinions that were voiced. Following this not-too-warm reception, Ward's Auto had a chance to talk to Chrysler designer chief - and SRT president - Ralph Gilles, who shed a little more light on the styling direction of the new Cherokee.
Rather than looking to previous models for inspiration, Gilles says that the Cherokee has been designed to be more contemporary, with Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, adding that a main goal was to make sure the design still looks modern five years from now. Interestingly, Gilles does point out that one of the design elements incorporated on the new Cherokee that pays homage to past Jeeps is the sharply downward angle for the leading edge of the beltline, which he notes is meant to mimic the look of the old YJ and TJ Wrangler models fitted with half doors. Of course, the squared-off wheel openings - a signature Jeep cue - are still used.
This is probably a design that will need to be seen on the street in actual daylight to properly assess, but in the meantime, we'll bring you full images and impressions when the Cherokee debuts at next month's New York Auto Show.

Ward's releases 10 Best Interiors list for 2014

Thu, 10 Apr 2014

While we're still a ways off from the automotive awards season proper, where things like North American Car and Truck of the Year, Motor Trend's Car of the Year and Car and Driver's Ten Best are named, that doesn't mean there aren't trophies being handed out to deserving automakers. Ward's 10 Best Interiors being one of them.
As the name might imply, the magazine focuses on the very best interior treatments in the US market. Whereas some awards purposely exclude extreme, high-dollar offerings, Ward's considers them - the only requirement is that a vehicle has a "new or significantly redesigned interior."
Ward's offered up the list of winners in simple, alphabetical order, and it only seems fair to do the same:

Chrysler's Jefferson North plant builds 5-millionth SUV [w/video]

Thu, 15 Aug 2013

Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant opened in 1992 for production of the first Jeep Grand Cherokee, but in the subsequent years, the Detroit plant has gone on to produce some of the company's biggest SUVs including the Jeep Commander and Dodge Durango. Earlier this week, the plant produced its five-millionth SUV, which, fittingly, was a Grand Cherokee.
Celebrating the plant's five-millionth unit, the silver 2014 Grand Cherokee was promptly donated to the USO. In addition to this milestone SUV, Chrysler also had a near-perfect 1993-95 ZJ Grand Cherokee on hand for the photo op. Scroll down for the Chrysler press release as well as a video showing some of the speeches from the celebration.
