Wishing for an alternative to having to drive our Yukon XL from Michigan  to Florida 4 times a year to chase saltwater fish, I bought the above 'critter' via eBay.  "Now we can fly down and reach both coasts via the Jeep"...  (youthful dreaming)...    Not ever willing to take chances with the unknown (typical 'old fart'), I rented a flat bed to trailer the 'beast' from the Gulf coast to Zellwood.  Delivered it to a 'Fix-it' shop to install an entire new brake system, new shocks, new tires, new battery, all new 'fluids', and all new 'tranny & transfer case seals.  Did get us to the coasts four times without events.  Wednesday, on the way back from Canaveral, Nancy said "the brakes are getting spongy".  I took over and they were not "spongy", they were almost non-existant.  Did get the canoes to the RV area, and then, back to our mobile.  Stepped on the brake entering the drive and the gauges pegged  zero and the motor died.  Not at all sophisticated in 'motordom', I called my son-in-law who quickly  diagnosed "O2 sensor failure" (?????)  Have not tried to start it again, for fear of causing further damage... (?)  When we did drive it, the 'critter' started instantly, sounded smooth, shifted cleanly, and seemed to have no glitches.  Now, here is the rub: would expect the buyer to 'flat-bed' (or tow it) on the pick up , and it MUST BE PICKED UP Saturday, the 6th or Sunday, the 7th. Leaving to MI Monday AM.  Located at Zellwood Station (Hwy 441), just north of Orlando.  Using Virgin Mobile for Net Connect, (not very stable), but will try to respond to "querys'' promptly.  (An eBayer just suggested that I try starting it again;  I turned the key, gauges read normal, twisted to start, instant response...  motor ran normally... ?????)  Duh...

Chrysler taking big risk snubbing NHTSA

Maker Insists Feds Overstate Risk Of Fires With Grand Cherokee, Liberty Models
It's not often that recall stories make it above the fold, in that old newspaper parlance, but when one shows up as the lead story on the network evening news programs, you know it's something big.
And so it is with Chrysler snubbing its nose at a request by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 2.7 million Jeeps the feds insist are at risk of potentially catastrophic fuel tank fires in a rear-end collision.

Jeep's Super 'Ute Is Fun Thrown In The Face Of Conventional Wisdom
Let's talk asses for a moment. What do they have to do with the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, you ask?
Well, we're here to tell you that this SRT can haul some. Lots of them, as a matter of fact: Jeep has increased the towing capacity of its most powerful SUV to 7,200 pounds. Assuming the average donkey weighs about 400 pounds, the Grand Cherokee SRT can haul ass to the tune of 18 burros, give or take a covered trailer or so, which is significantly more than it could in previous years. In 2013, the machine could manage 5,000 pounds, while the first generation was rated at just 3,500. The increase is mostly attributable to a new eight-speed automatic transmission and beefier rear axle, and it's a welcome update for those who'd like to use their SUV as, well, an SUV with an emphasis on utility.

Chrysler, Nissan looking into claim that their cars are industry's most hackable

Sun, 10 Aug 2014

A pair of cyber security experts have awarded the ignominious title of most hackable vehicles on American roads to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, 2014 Infiniti Q50 and 2015 Cadillac Escalade.
Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek are set to release a report at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, Automotive News reports. The two men found the Jeep, Caddy and Q50 were easiest to hack based not on actual tests with the vehicles, but a detailed analysis of systems like Bluetooth and wireless internet access - basically, anything that'd allow a hacker to remotely gain access to the vehicle's systems.
Considering this lack of hands-on testing, the pair acknowledge that "most hackable" could be a relative term - they point out that the vehicles may actually be quite secure.
