Frostburg, Maryland, United States

1990 Jeep Wrangler w/hard top. 2.5L 5 speed. Runs good.

Exterior: Body was completely redone in Summer of 2013. Included rust removal (sandblasting & cut out). Body was sanded to bare metal and repainted. Gravel/chip guard applied to bottom areas and front grill & windshield. New doors were purchased, painted. New hard top painted inside & out. New side step bars. New hardtop latch handle. New wiper arms. New fender flares. New wheel center caps, new lifetime warranty lug nuts (McGard). New rear frame crossmember/bumper. Undercarriage scraped free of mud & painted. New hood catches & hinges. New door hinges. New windshield hinges. New mirror relocation kit installed. New exterior mirrors.  I don't have a spare tire for it.  I took the tire carrier off, but I still have it.

Interior: New neoprene seat covers on front & rear. Dash repainted black. New locking center console. New locking glove box. New door pull handles, window cranks. Replaced inner & outer shifter boots. Interior floor pan repainted/coated with gravel guard (3M). New weatherstripping all around.

Mechanical: New rear shocks. . Tires are in good condition, rear are about 75% tread, front about 50%. New radiator, new distributor cap & rotor. Chassis is a 1990 with about 195,000 miles. Engine is from a 1992 Wrangler & has approximately 133,000 miles on it.  New steering shaft (from steering wheel to steering box). New transfer case chain installed.

I bought this for my teenage son, but he doesn't think it's cool enough.  As the description above says, I've done quite a bit of work to it to get into good working order and make it visually appealing...at least in my opinion.  It passed Maryland inspection in the Fall of 2013, so all mechanical & safety components are in good working order.

The vehicle is 24 years old, so it's a little quirky.  Takes some time to warm up and run smoothly, so you can't just jump in & go during cold weather.  The high beam switch is broken, I replaced it, but the aftermarket junk broke already.  The lift kit makes it a little more difficult to drive, so two-handed driving is always a good idea at highway speeds.  It is only a 2.5L 4 cylinder, so don't expect to do any street racing with it.  A safe top speed is about 70 mph...and that's exactly why I got my son a Jeep...boys will be boys.

I've only owned this for about 7 months, so I can tell you my experiences with it.  CarFax does show an accident several years ago, but it appears to have been only a minor fender bender.  The driver side front fender had been damaged.  I did the bodywork on it, so you can't even tell it now.

Jeep Cherokee finally dealer-bound

Tue, 22 Oct 2013

We had our First Drive of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee last month, but it appears that prospective buyers won't have too much longer to finally get time behind the wheel of the new small Jeep.
Automotive News is reporting that after a two-month delay, Jeep dealers will finally start receiving their first shipments of the new Cherokee, in the next 10 days. A Chrysler spokesperson confirmed to Autoblog that the Cherokee is indeed on its way to Jeep dealers.
According to AN, about 23,000 Cherokees have been built since production commenced back in June, but potential powertrain issues forced Jeep to make adjustments to the Cherokee along the way. Automotive News says that in order to make sure there are no issues with the Cherokee before it reaches customers, it is testing each vehicle after it rolls off the assembly line at a rented test track near the vehicle's Toledo North Assembly Plant.

Chrysler 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: Autoblog Technology of the Year finalist

Wed, 19 Nov 2014

Offering a diesel engine in an American pickup is anything but new - Ford, General Motors and Chrysler all offer excellent and almost impossibly powerful oil-burning engines in their various fullsize trucks. What is new and novel about the 3.0L EcoDiesel, though, is its size, and the variety of vehicles that use it. It's the smallest engine, as far as displacement is concerned, currently offered in a large truck in the US, and, for 2014 and 2015, it is available in the Ram 1500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Though it may be small, it's got muscle. While 240 horsepower isn't particularly impressive these days, the engine's 420 pound-feet of torque more than makes up for that. The torque rating is even greater force than even the big 5.7-liter Hemi can muster. Chrysler's well-regarded eight-speed automatic transmission makes the most of all that bull-headed pulling power in both the Ram and Grand Cherokee. Chrysler claims the Ram EcoDiesel 1500 can tow as much as 9,200 pounds when properly equipped, which makes it "90-percent of the Hemi with a night and day difference in fuel economy."
Make no mistake; it's that promise of a sizable fuel economy improvement that many long-haul truckers will be most interested in. In the Ram 1500 that we tested for our Tech of the Year competition, the diesel engine costs $2,850 more than the gas-fed V8, and Ram estimates that EcoDiesel buyers will pay off their investment when compared to the Hemi engine in less than three years, which is considerably less time than the 4.5 or so years the average buyer will keep his or her fullsize pickup. The more you drive, the more you'll save, and the math proves equally as effective in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

The Cherokee Is Dead. Long Live The Cherokee.
There are three sentences that, for this reviewer, define what needs to be conveyed about the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The first: it is very good.
Jeep spent 27 years building the Cherokee and its brand, from 1974 to 2001. Twelve years ago, the Cherokee nameplate rolled away into the distant hills and retirement, at least here in the NAFTA colonies, and it was replaced by a loaded word we knew as "Liberty."
