Up for auction is my friend's 2001 ES 300. This car has about 211,000 miles on it but the engine only has about 130,000 miles.  The engine was replaced because the prior owner did not change the oil soon enough so the engine started making noise shortly after my friend bought it. I helped him source a engine that only had about 100,000  miles on it. The engine was installed when the car had about 179,000 miles on it. We contracted a Toyota / Lexus technician for installation of the engine. All of the following was performed during the engine replacement:  Replacement of both primary air / fuel ratio sensors, timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets, rear main engine oil seal, spark plugs, all fluids and filters. Only genuine Lexus parts were used for this.

Other recent repairs include:

NEW front and rear brake pads (replaced  on 4/25/2011 @ 191,000 miles)
NEW battery (replaced on 5/04/2012 @ 204,000 miles)
NEW alternator (replaced on 9/14/2012 @ 208,000 miles) - you can see how new it is in one of the pics.
NEW charcoal canister (replaced on 1/30/13 @ 210,000 miles) - check engine light was on so it required replacement
Major Service (performed on 6/06/12 @ 205,000 miles)

All of the above (in italics) were performed at a local Lexus dealer.

The oil pan and transmission pan was just resealed a week ago by a Toyota technician.

Overall the car is VERY CLEAN with only minor flaws that you would expect for a car of this age. The car does have some minor dings and scratches here and there along with a few scrapes on the rear bumper. The tires have at least 60 % tread life remaining. The car drives tight, smooth and does not leak a drop of oil. The driver exterior mirror has some discoloration on the lens but you can still see everything behind you. Seat heaters are inoperable (probably just needs switches). Car is equipped with a aftermarket Pioneer head unit which has bluetooth, Make no mistake I do not think you will find a cleaner or better car for the money. The interior is VERY clean and keep in mind it hasn't been detailed. Rear seat had a small tear which has been repaired. The car has been a smoke free car for all of it's life (as far as I know). I reserve the right to cancel the auction due to local "word of mouth" advertising. Car is priced fairly in accordance to local KBB value. I priced this ES300 based on a car with 211,000 miles on it but as I mentioned earlier the engine only has 130,000 miles on it with plenty of NEW Lexus OEM parts......no aftermarket discount junk parts were used.

What's in a trademark? Sometimes, the next iconic car name

Thu, 07 Aug 2014

The United States Patent and Trademark Office is a treasure trove for auto enthusiasts, especially those who double as conspiracy theorists.
Why has Toyota applied to trademark "Supra," the name of one of its legendary sports cars, even though it hasn't sold one in the United States in 16 years? Why would General Motors continue to register "Chevelle" long after one of the most famous American muscle cars hit the end of the road? And what could Chrysler possibly do with the rights to "313," the area code for Detroit?

Lexus to replace GX SUV with new TX crossover

Wed, 31 Jul 2013

There's been a lot of news regarding future Lexus products recently, including spy shots of new RC coupe and NX compact crossover, and reports that a 2+2 coupe based on the LF-LC concept is heading for production. Now, Automotive News says that Japan's #1 luxury automaker is planning to replace the fullsize, body-on-frame Lexus GX SUV with a three-row crossover called the TX.
The article says that the GX, which is based on the foreign-market Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, will get a styling update for 2014 before being phased out in 2016. In a similar move as Infiniti made with its new three-row JX/QX60, the new TX will be car-based, but details are still unknown as to whether it will be front-wheel-drive riding on the Toyota Avalon platform or rear-wheel-drive using the Lexus GS platform. Either way, this new luxury crossover could join the Lexus lineup as soon as late 2016.

2013 Lexus IS F

Mon, 25 Mar 2013

Sometimes fortune really smiles on even shiftless car-reviewing Dutchmen like myself, I must admit. I had come into Austin, TX the week before I was supposed to meet up with the good people at Lexus, who had graciously invited me to drive the 2014 IS. I flew in early because Austin is a pretty good place to eat, as well as being a place that my wife doesn't live. Let me say that a nicer way... while my stunningly attractive wife pretty much represents all things good and light in this world, she does occasionally shoot me a sideways glance when I dig in for my fifth Tacodeli breakfast taco. Thankfully, I leave most of my good sense and information about the effects of high-calorie diets on lifespan at home with Molly when I come to Texas, so I can better focus my laser-like attention on car reviews and TexMex. You guys are worth it.
Aside from all the tacos, I was also lucky to be visiting town the weekend before South By Southwest really kicked off in earnest, because it was that Sunday that my good old buddy John, and my new old buddy Pat, were headed up to the Circuit of the Americas to see the first ever SCCA Majors event there. It was lucky that I had planned to be out at CotA, which is east of Austin, because that made it very slightly easier for a very nice woman named Marcia to bring me a 2013 Lexus IS F from Houston, roughly 150 miles away.
Marcia brought me the IS F to replace another press car, which was having mechanical troubles; I didn't ask for the fire-breathing IS but when it was offered up I figured I couldn't do much better as a warm up for the 2014 IS program I was about to go on. See, lucky right?
