One of 850 Coupes built.
The first Lincoln Continental was developed as Edsel Ford's one-off
personal vehicle. In 1938, he commissioned a custom design from the chief stylist, Bob Gregorie, ready for Edsel's
March 1939 vacation in Florida. The design, allegedly sketched out in an hour by Gregorie working from the Lincoln
Zephyr blueprints and making changes, was an elegant Convertible with a long hood covering the Lincoln V12 and long
front fenders, and a short trunk with what became the Continental series' trademark, the externally-mounted covered
spare
tire. While on vacation Edsel got orders for 200.
The original Continental was one of the first cars recognized as
something more than a mere machine -- by New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Classic Car Club of America,
among others -- and one of the finest examples of the automobile as art.
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who owned 2, called the first generation Lincoln Continental "the most beautiful car
ever designed."
Celebrities embraced the new car. Rita Hayworth, Jackie Cooper, Mickey Rooney, Clark Gable, John Wayne, boxer Joe
Louis and Jack Benny - purchased sleek, new Lincoln Continentals.
Restoration just completed. Previous owner had car for 60
plus years and started restoration but stopped in the 60's due to health issues, it sat in his San Diego garage for
the past 50 years.
The V12 engine was just rebuilt with new Egge aluminum pistons and rings, new bearings, valve job with new
Stainless steel valves, new one piece guides. Machine work done by H & H flatheads. Reground crankshaft, camshaft,
and lifters. Distributor rebuilt, Coil rebuilt, and new plug wires. Water pumps rebuilt. Clutch and brakes already
replaced, transmission got 2 gears replaced. Rebuilt radiator, rebuilt fuel tank, rebuilt fuel pump, rebuilt
carburetor, rebuilt starter and generator. Fresh paint(original Rockingham Tan). New carpeting, seats redone, new
door panels, and new headliner. Trunk re-carpeted.
New Coker Whitewall Radials(steel belted bias style). New 6 volt
Optima battery. Car runs and drives fantastic.

Ford hybrids getting update to improve fuel economy

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

Ford has announced that it is introducing "calibration updates designed to improve on-road fuel economy for owners of the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid, 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid."
We can speculate that these changes are at least due in part to lawsuits over mileage claims of hybrid vehicles. The automaker is enhancing 2013 models starting in August by raising their electric cruising speed to 85 miles per hour from 62 mph, optimizing the use of active grille shutters and the climate control system, shortening the engine warm-up period by 50 percent and reducing electric fan speed to minimize the fan's energy consumption.
It bears mentioning that Ford is doing pretty well in the US electrified vehicle market this year. The company claims to have grown its share in the segment by 12 points to 16 percent while taking a high number of Toyota Prius trade-ins in the process. Conversely, Toyota has experienced a five-percent drop in new-Prius sales over the same period. Additionally, Ford states that it has increased its share of the US vehicle market by one percent this year, more than any full-line automaker.

2015 Lincoln MKC priced from $33,995* [w/poll]

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

Looking to build on the momentum it struggled to establish with the MKZ, Lincoln recently unveiled the production version of its all-new MKC last month at the LA Auto Show. With a proven platform shared with the Ford Escape and striking design, the 2015 Lincoln MKC goes on sale next summer ready to take on the ever-expanding world of luxury compact crossovers. Breaking into this new segment, Lincoln has priced the MKC aggressively as one of the least-expensive offerings in its class, starting at $33,995 (*including destination charges).
At that price, the 2015 MKC costs a little bit more than a fully loaded 2014 Ford Escape Titanium and is just slightly less costly than the Acura RDX and Volvo XC60. More importantly, it's thousands less than Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLK-Class. The MKC will be offered in three trim levels for now - there is still no more information about Lincoln's new Black Label products - ranging from the base Premiere up to the range-topping Reserve.
The Premiere will come standard with features like active grille shutters, push-button start, remote start, dual-zone climate control and heated front seats, while the midgrade Select starts at $37,225 and adds upgraded 18-inch wheels, ambient lighting, daytime running lights and a steering wheel featuring Wollsdorf leather. The top-shelf Reserve trim level starts at $40,930 and brings even more luxury features including the panoramic roof, navigation, cooled front seats and wifi access.

Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception

Tue, 25 Sep 2012

It's hard to think back now, but the same man overseeing the design of the 2013 Ford Fusion also presided over a rather lackluster period in Ford design, highlighted by vehicles like the Five Hundred and Freestyle. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer.
When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge.
It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion.
