Up for auction is the classic Mercedes Turbo Diesel Wagon.  I bought this 1981 beauty in July of '06 from the estate of an elderly gentleman in Naples, FL with about 91,000.  It is virtually rust free.  It runs like a charm (I've driven it to North Carolina and back with no problems) and I've enjoyed every mile in it.  I can't believe how much smoother, quieter and faster the five cylinder turbo is compared to my four cylinder non turbo 240D.  Cruising along on the highway is a pleasure at turnpike speeds (and maybe a little faster!)

It's got right around 100,000 miles, so it's just getting started.  I took these pictures a couple months ago, and the mileage as of today is now 99,920.  It's still in the same condition, obviously.  It is garaged in the winter and brought out in the spring.  The cruise works, the clock works, no dash cracks.  However, it is a 32 year old car and so has some minor issues:

There is a minor repaired tear in the driver's seat bolster (shown.)
* The tailgate struts are tired.  I will include a new pair in a box in the car.  It's an afternoon job.
* The A/C does not hold a charge.  Everything is there and works, but there must be a leak somewhere.
* The rear right power window works, but makes a funny noise when it reaches the top.  Maybe it's nothing, maybe something need tightening, maybe a new regulator is in your future.
* The self leveling suspension doesn't seem to operate.  I've never needed it, but I have a friend who just repaired his pretty easily.  That's more than an afternoon job, though.

It has no major issues.  It starts right up, runs great, looks great and I get comments wherever I go in it.  A friend's daughter even said it was a total chick magnet car.  I think she was kidding but it was nice to hear!  The Palomino MB-Tex interior is in very good condition, although the carpet in the back has the usual sun fade issues where the spare tire is.  Other than the previously mentioned repaired tear, everything is terrific.  The netting on the back of the front seats is even tight.  The dash and console are in excellent condition.  The rear seats are virtually flawless.

The exterior looks great.  There are a couple of minor scratches here and there but nothing major.  It looks to my eye like a panel or two may have been resprayed in the past but I don't know this for sure.  It looks fantastic, even up close.

I have extensive records dating back to March of 1982.  I have religiously changed the oil every 3,000 miles or less with Rotella 15w-40.  I am a longtime member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America and am active on several Mercedes forums and a moderator on one.  The car and I are both known in the Mercedes community.  And I believe in treating people courteously and fairly.  You will not be disappointed with this car.

Update:  I was just looking at the listing and checked out the Auto Check report.  Evidently the car was in a fender bender involving the right front.  I have inspected this area of the car and it must have been minor and professionally repaired because there is no evidence of the incident.  If you want any extra photos or details feel free to email me.  Thanks for looking!

LA To The Grand Canyon In The Mercedes-Benz Of RVs
Piloting an 8,500-pound motorized house down the highway is far from my idea of fun, yet inexplicably, I'm enjoying myself. My grin has nothing to do with my camper's handling, as this heavily accoutered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter drives like a 25-foot long breadbox. My smile has nothing to do with on-road stability, as the ten-foot-tall, slab-sided vehicle reacts to wind gusts like the vertical stabilizer on a Boeing jet. My delight has nothing to do with its throttle or braking response, either, as both are as numb as your forehead after the eighth beer.
This monstrosity makes me happy for one reason - my passengers are undeniably having a good time.

Mercedes A45 AMG in downhill battle with slipstream skateboarder

Mon, 30 Sep 2013

We're told it takes "performance, control and expression" to pilot a longboard skateboard down a mountain road, and that those happen to be the same values embodied in the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. That's how the two came to be combined in a black-and-white short film called Silver Slipstream.
There's no talking, no engine note and no color, just some music, a 'boarder and a car on a long cruise down the Franschhoek Pass in the Western Cape of South Africa." Despite that, it's actually a pretty entertaining video of the latest Mercedes-Benz hot hatch married with extreme sports. You can watch how it all goes down in the video below.

Mercedes-AMG considering turbo fours, hybrid sixes for future performance sedans

Tue, 29 Apr 2014

Think of the letters AMG and you'll probably end up picturing a performance sedan with a big V8. Such has become, after all, the Mercedes turning division's calling card. But with the introduction of its 2.0-liter turbo four, AMG is working at turning that notion on its head.
The highly potent engine produces 355 horsepower and is presently installed in the A45 AMG hatchback, CLA45 AMG sedan and GLA45 AMG crossover, giving Benz's smallest family a full range of performance models. But that might not be the full extent of the high-strung four-pot's use.
Speaking with AMG boss Tobias Moers, Britain's What Car? magazine reports that Affalterbach is considering slotting the same engine into larger models, particularly performance sedans like the C-Class. As we recently reported, Mercedes is already preparing to up the power from the turbo V6 in the C400 to slot a C450 Sport in below the C63 AMG. The C450 is expected to offer around 367 horsepower where the CLA45 AMG et al pack 355, but the lighter weight of the four-cylinder engine would likely offset the truancy of those extra dozen horses. Of course such a prospect would be much further down the pipeline than the C450 Sport which is expected to arrive much sooner.
