Step back in time with this classic icon of automotive history.  Insured with Haggerty for $12,500 and worth every penny but you get to set the price with this No Reserve Auction.

I bought this a year ago and had it shipped up from the mid South where it spent its life, apparently with one owner.  I dealt with the estate agent so the entire history was not known.  The Auto Check report only goes back to 1987 and it shows only one owner before me.

Obviously well kept and not exposed to bad weather but it was in need of some freshening.  I am a bit of a perfectionist so I probably did more than most would but in the last year and 5,000 miles I had the following done:

4 Michelin Harmony 80,000 mile rated tires.  She rides on upgraded 15" SDL rims with full spare in trunk.  Rims are in great condition, not curb rashed and no vibration.

Alignment,

Ball joints,

Tie rods,

Bilistien Shocks,

Interstate Battery,

Sunroof seals.  While they were not leaking they were weather checked so all were replaced,

Stereo, replaced with Pioneer remote controlled AMFMCD,

Speakers, all four replaced,

Transmission, after changing the fluid it started slipping a bit in 4th gear.  Rather than replace just the band I had the whole thing brought back to new specs by totally rebuilding.  Work was done by Dr Steve's Transmission in Manchester NH.  Still under warranty till July.  He is a Mercedes fanatic who collects and restores them.  Shifts perfect.

Upgraded the supple leather seats with heat in both front seat bottoms,

A few years back the car was repainted and the color changed from silver to smoke gray.  Decent job but not museum quality.  Think $3,000 job, not $10,000.  Left rear bumper has a minor paint scrape as shown in picture.  The aluminum trim around the doors is showing some patina which I find in keeping with the vintage.  No evidence of rust, bondo or rust repair.

Interior is mint.  No rips, sags, stains or smells.  Glass is mint.  No chips or obvious scratches.  Dash is mint, no splits or fading.

Driveline is mint.  Always starts and runs fine and will cruise as fast as you want. No unusual smoke, smells or funny noises.  Has the Mercedes "vault like construction" you hear about. Cruise control holds steady, gauges all work, climate control keeps you cool in summer and warm on chilly Spring and Fall days.  Stereo sounds much better than stock.  Antennae is balky so I disconnected the power so it stays in the up position.  Sunroof and power windows work as they should, central power locks including fuel door and trunk all lock and unlock as they should.  Wipers are new and washer system works as it should.  Power seats work in all directions and the fact they are all leather and heated is a real bonus.  Brakes are discs at all four corners and have plenty of meat but do pulsate a bit.  Not bothersome enough for me to change as the car stops really well with no pulling.

The center trim around the switches had surface cracks and drilling for the heated seat switches didn't do it any favors.  So I had it repaired and dipped in hard plastic coating in black to match the interior.

Took a couple pictures of the underside so you can see it is as nice as the rest of the car.

I have really enjoyed touring the mountains and coastlines of New England in this car.  It's old enough to be a classic and take to local parades and car gatherings but nice and reliable enough to use everyday.  Looking out over the long hood and through the Mercedes symbol creates a feeling you just can't get from modern cars.  I would not hesitate to drive this car across country and back multiple times.  It presents itself beautifully and with the low miles and rebuilt tranny it should be good to go for another 30 years. Sips fuel and is inexpensive to insure at only $180 per year. If I had a bigger garage I would keep it, but I have too many vehicles and need the space.

Just State Inspected in May 2013 and was treated to a fresh synthetic oil change.  Needs nothing but you in the drivers seat to enjoy.  And please, since this is a true no reserve auction I will not be accepting bids from anyone with less than 5 positive feedbacks.  Thank you.

World Car Of The Year down to its final four

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Judges for the World Car of the Year Award have narrowed down the finalists to just four vehicles. Out of a total of 42 entries, only the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 and Volkswagen Golf remain standing. For Volkswagen, this marks the second consecutive year the company has had an entry among the finalists, and the fourth time since 2009. In order to qualify, a vehicle must be on sale on two continents during the span of time between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2013. A panel of 66 journalists from 23 countries then vote on the finalists.
Three vehicles have made the cut for the last round of voting on the 2013 World Performance Car as well, with the Cayman/Boxster and FR-S/BRZ/GT-86 running against the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Meanwhile, the Renault Zoe, Tesla Model S and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid are duking it out for the World Green Car Award. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year Award is up for grabs between the Aston Martin Vanquish, Jaguar F-Type, and the Mazda6. Check out the full press release below. Overall winners will be presented at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

How could a lifted Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG be more awesome? Add an axle

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

We are fully confident in saying that this will be the most amazing thing you see all day. First of all, it's a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen - in AMG spec, no less. And it's being shown off in high-definition video glory, blasting through the desert, jumping over sand dunes, and generally being awesome. But here's the kicker: It has six wheels. Three axles. And they're all driven. Holy $%!#.
Under the hood is AMG's usual 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, and total output is rated at 536 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That's impressive and all, but do keep in mind that the G63 6x6 weighs in at 8,322 pounds or, you know, the weight of two E-Class sedans. Combine that with its 18 inches of ground clearance, 37-inch tires and five locking differentials and you've got a vehicle capable of, well, everything you've ever imagined or will ever imagine for the rest of your life.
But the goodness doesn't stop once you open the doors. Oh, no. This thing is fit for a king - or a sheik, more appropriately - with ultimately luxurious seating for four. The rear bench seat has been removed in favor of two bucket seats with a fixed console in the middle, and the rear seats have been moved back beyond the usual B pillar to allow for more legroom.

Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.
That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?
Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.
