1990 Mercedes 560sel With Many Rare Options on 2040-cars
Pacoima, California, United States
Presenting one of the finer examples of the w126 chassis available anywhere. This one has two very rare stock interior options- orthopedic seats and the rear sunshade. I added a Nakamichi CD400 headunit and an MBQuart 4.125 amplifier, as well as Polk speakers for an excellent sound system. There is an iPhone/iPod connector installed as well. Rounding out the interior additions, I also custom-installed a TomTom GPS unit (lifetime traffic), so that there are no loose power cords.
The exterior also has several rare (for the US) modifications. It has european bumpers (very rare for a Gen II W126). It also has european headlights (using H4 bulbs for much better visibility), and european amber turn signals. I have installed a glass sunroof from a Mercedes W140 chassis (it fits perfectly), making this car practically one-of-a-kind. The european hazard triangle is also included. Mechanically, the car is in excellent shape. I just replaced the entire top-end fuel delivery system, including a new (rebuilt) fuel distributor, new injectors, new injector seals and idle air hoses. The car has an extensive repair history (with records going back to new). The timing chain and tensioner were replaced 60K miles ago, along with rebuilt heads and new head gaskets. The transmission shifts smoothly (including reverse) and has had a recent fluid/filter replacement. The brakes are in excellent condition, with Akebono ceramic pads all around on nearly-new rotors. The front shocks have 25K miles, and the rear accumulators have 40K. It has an upgraded 19mm rear sway bar (custom manufactured by Hellwig), giving the car flatter handling in corners. It has a new set of General Altimax HP tires with less than 4000 miles on them. A new radiator and a new battery have just been installed. All fluids have been replaced regularly. There are a few things that a perfectionist will want to fix. There are two small dings on the right rear quarter (pictured), and there are a few paint flaws. The clear coat is intact however. Next Mercedes-Benz GLK to get AMG variant? Not likely...
Fri, 15 Mar 2013If you think Mercedes-Benz will slap an AMG badge on anything with wheels, think again. Word has it the German manufacturer will not offer buyers a performance version of the GLK, with Tobias Moers, director of AMG vehicle development, saying that he doesn't see a market for the car. That's not to say the picture won't change in the near future, however. According to CarAdvice.com, AMG is keeping a close eye on the arrival of the Porsche Macan.
"Maybe there will be a change in the market when the Porsche [Macan] comes up," Moers said, "but right now, no."
The real hitch in the giddy-up seems to be cost. Moers says developing the machine into something worthy of an AMG would represent "a huge investment." We can't exactly argue with that. Fortunately, AMG buyers have plenty of Mercedes-Benz models to choose from.
Watch Schumacher's hot lap of N"urburgring in Mercedes F1 car
Fri, 31 May 2013In advance of the Nürburgring 24-hour race last weekend, Mercedes-Benz put on a demonstration that had Michael Schumacher playing catch-up in a Formula One car against four examples of AMG metal. There were four cars sent off in staggered starts before Schumacher: an A45 AMG, E63 AMG 4Matic, SLS AMG Black Series, and an SLS AMG GT3 car. "Mr. Formula One," as the German television commentators call him, left three minutes after the SLS AMG GT3.
There are two videos of Schumacher's lap, the first is on-board footage - and even though there were several GoPros on the car the POV never cuts away from the front wing. You can hear the throttle and tell he's not pushing it, you can also tell how bumpy the track is. The second video is footage from the German Sport1 channel - with commentary in German - that shows all the cars taking off and takes the aerial view of proceedings. He looks to be going a lot faster in that one. You can compare and contrast yourself with the videos below.
Oh, and it's worth noting that, even with the likely restricted car, and the made-for-TV environment, Schumi turned in a quick lap. The nose camera shows the F1 car start to slow down on the back straight, near the start/finish line, right around the modern-length track record time of six minutes and eleven seconds.
Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat
Wed, 06 Mar 2013If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.
That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?
Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.
