Nobody executes the combination of performance and luxury like Mercedes-Benz, and the 2008 CLS-Class represents Mercedes-Benz' take on those two attributes in a mid-size sedan. The interior dimensions are on the small size--particularly in the rear seat--so Mercedes-Benz has elected to call it a "four-door coupe."Both CLS-Class coupes are motivated by impressive engines. The 5.5L V8 in the CLS550 generates a more-than-respectable 382 horsepower. For a bit more than $25,000 extra, the CLS63 AMG version crams an envy-creating 6.3L V8 engine under the hood, capable of kicking out 507 horses. The transmission in both trims is Mercedes-Benz' seven-speed automatic. This means the car always can find the optimum gear for any situation. This also allows the car to operate within respectable efficiency numbers for a V8-powered performance car, although both engines incur a gas-guzzler tax. Both CLS-Class versions feature an air suspension system Mercedes-Benz calls Airmatic. The car floats on pneumatic spring-struts and variable rate shocks. The driver can select both suspension sport mode and ride height. The CLS-Class will also automatically lower at speed to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The interior is all Mercedes-Benz-style luxury. Both front seats are trimmed in leather, have ten-way power adjusters, and feature three-position memory settings. Climate control keeps no fewer than four zones comfortable. A high-end harmon/kardon 7.1 channel stereo system utilizes 12 speakers. Added for 2008 is Sirius satellite radio, so drivers can even eliminate annoying ads from their decompression chamber. The P2 Package includes DVD navigation, ventilated front seats, bi-xenon headlamps, and a clever curve-illumination feature that helps the driver "see" around bends in the road. Also included is Mercedes-Benz' Keyless Go system. Those looking for added performance on the CLS550 will be interested in the AMG Sport Package, which includes fat 40-series performance tires and steering-wheel shift paddles. Mercedes-Benz' adaptive Distronic cruise control system is an available option, as is the brand's Parktronic parking assist system. The CLS63 is the bigger brother, but the only major difference is the engine, which is now a hefty 6.3L V8. Handling is improved via larger stabilizer bars, 19-inch AMG wheels, and AMG six-piston front brakes. The steering wheel is a special AMG design. On the CLS63, the Performance Package includes a limited-slip differential, and a special AMG compound brake system.

Maybach and Aston Martin alliance talks fall apart

Tue, 27 Sep 2011

If you have, like us, been salivating at the notion of a new generation of Maybach and Lagonda ultra-luxury crafts built by Aston Martin, we've got some bad news: According to reports emanating from Germany, talks between AML and Daimler have broken down.
The proposal under negotiation would have seen Daimler outsourcing production of the next family of Maybach models to Aston Martin, which in return would benefit from Mercedes-Benz platforms and engines - not only for its svelte GTs, but also for its own future Lagonda line of limousines and luxury SUVs. That, and a boatload of money - or at least that's what AML was reportedly seeking, an issue that served as the stumbling block over which the deal reportedly collapsed.
That's not to say the two parties couldn't still reach some sort of a compromise, but short of that, Daimler may opt to either shut down Maybach altogether, find another partner, or take another stab at building new models internally.

AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away

Mon, 16 Sep 2013

After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.

Daimler names Bernd Pischetsrieder to supervisory board

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Some executives in the automotive industry stay with one company for their entire careers, while others bounce from one to the other, often leaving their indelible mark on each automaker at which they serve. Bob Lutz is certainly an example of the latter. So is Lee Iacocca, having presided over Ford and later charing the Chrysler board. Carlos Tavares was chief operating officer of Renault before being nominated as chief executive at PSA Peugeot Citroën. But as far as the Germans go, nobody's jumped from the leadership of one automaker to the next quite like Bernd Pischetsrieder - especially now that he's been named to the supervisory board of Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.
An engineer by training, Pischetsrieder started his career at BMW in 1973, eventually rising to the office of CEO after twenty years. There he remained until 1999, only to be dismissed after orchestrating BMW's takeover of the Rover Group (of which only the Mini brand remains in the company's portfolio, the other brands having been sold off after his dismissal).
The next year he was named chairman of Volkswagen's Seat brand, and rose to the chairmanship of the entire Volkswagen Group two years later. Despite a largely successful four-year tenure (that gave birth, incidentally, to the Bugatti Veyron), disagreements with supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piëch saw him leave the helm at VW AG, focusing his attention on the Scania truck division. He's since been touted as a potential chief executive for Opel and for Continental, but neither potential was apparently realized.
