Mercedes-Benz's mid-size line of sedans were built on the W124 chassis from 1984 to 1995. For the 1994 model year the E420 was the base model V-8 engine sedan, with the E500 being slotted just above it. The E420 was only available in sedan body style, while the inline, six cylinder powered E320 was produced as a sedan, coupe and convertible
.

Drivetrain

  • The E420 derives its power from a 4.2-liter version of Mercedes venerable M119 V-8 engine. This naturally aspirated power-plant has a 32-valve DOHC design with a 3.62-inch bore, 3.11-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 11 to 1. This German-engineered and produced engine generates 275 hp at 5,700 rpm and 295 foot-pounds of torque at 3,900 rpm. Mercedes pairs this motor to a four-speed automatic gearbox and does not offer a manual transmission in this model.

Exterior Dimensions

  • The V-8 engine E420 has a curb weight of 3,745 lbs., which is 220 more than the V6 powered E320 sedan. This mid-size Mercedes-Benz sits on a 110.2-inch wheelbase with a 59.5-inch front track and a 56.3-inch rear track. The body of the E420 has an overall length of 187.2 inches, width of 68.5 inches and height of 56.3 inches. Mercedes E420 offers its driver a 37-foot turning diameter and the car rolls on a set of 195/65R15 size tires.

Interior Dimensions

  • The Mercedes E420 cabin offers seating for five people. Occupants of this mid-size sedan's front seats are treated to 36.9 inches of headroom, 41.7 inches of legroom, 55.9 inches of shoulder room and 53 inches of hip room. Passengers in this vehicle's rear seats are afforded 36.9 inches of headroom, 33.5 inches of legroom, 55.7 inches of shoulder room and 55.4 inches of hip room.

Fuel Economy

  • The E420's combination of rear-wheel drive, 4.2-liter, V-8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission yields 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Fuel is drawn from an 18.5-gallon tank.

This is truly an incredible machine.  In 1994 it sold for over $52,000.00.  I have had it for about 3 years, but I have not driven it much.  As you can see in the pictures there are a few large scratches that she received when the shelter I put up to cover her blew over and scratched her. The fuse is out for the sun roof but it does work, some times it was picky about closing so my wife asked me to pull the fuse.  The car is not running right now, but she runs like a rocket and there are no problems with the engine or the trans or the rear-end. This car has not rattles and is extremely solid.  VERY FAST and FUN TO DRIVE!!!  The AC blower was giving me a problem so I purchased a new one and it worked great, but a few weeks later it stopped blowing (AC was working but would not blow) so I worked on it some more and I could get it to work but it would only blow for a short time and then it would stop.  I tested the blower off of the car and it works. After working on the AC for a few hours I gave up and put her back together so I could take her to someone else to work on her.  She had been running all day but when I put her all back together she would not start.  I have been told that it has to be something simple.  This GREAT car was my extra car and a toy so at that time she did not make it to the top of my TO DO LIST. I put the cover over her and put her to bed.  The interior is like new with no rips or ware showing on the seats at all.  The carpets are in great shape ect.  The electric seats work great.  She has brand new tires that only have about 500 miles on them.  I was going to part her out but I could not bring myself to do it to such a great driving machine, not to mention the time it would take to do it and I do not have the tools that would be needed to do the job. With a little bit of TLC and not much money this will be a great car for someone that wants a real head turner.  She no longer has a battery in her. She does have a CD changer in the trunk but I could not get it to work but I never really worked on it, the original radio is working. I do love this car and I am sure I will regret getting rid of her.  Have fun and bid often!!!

Mercedes mulling Renault-based entry-level X-Class?

Sun, 17 Mar 2013

Somewhere in between the Smart brand and the all-new A-Class (pictured above), Daimler is said to be readying a smaller entry-level product for the Mercedes-Benz brand to compete with models like the Audi A1. According to AutoBild, Mercedes-Benz will get a new hatchback based on a platform from its recent partnership with Renault-Nissan, and it could be called the X-Class.
Expected to debut by 2018, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class could be offered in sedan, hatchback and crossover variants, and it would likely have a starting price below the $20,000-euro mark. Power would come from either a 1.0-liter inline three-cylinder engine or a 1.5-liter inline-four, and the car would likely be built in a low-cost nation in order to make the financials work. Wearing the Mercedes-Benz name, the X-Class would have to exhibit more distinguishable luxury and styling to set itself apart from the models that helped provide its underpinnings.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid for fat cats frugal with fuel

Thu, 12 Sep 2013

Judging by how long we waited to get a clear shot of the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid, you'd have thought hybrid cars were only driven by Terminators and that the technology arrived only 48 hours ago through a wormhole in the Mercedes stand. The newest member of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class hybrid band - joining the S400 Hybrid and S350 BlueTEC Hybrid, it hits notes like a 5.5-second sprint from standstill to 62 miles per hour, up to 19 miles of ion-powered running and uses three liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in Europe (78.41 mpg US, but our mpg test cycle is different than their mpg test cycle).
The lump up front is a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6, the lump in back - note the reduction in trunk space - is a pack of lithium-ion batteries that juice an 80-kilowatt electric motor. Other than having four drive options for controlling electric drive and battery usage, it's all S-Class all the time, with leather-covered everything and those mountainous thrones that bring to mind words like "Archduke" and "Papal."
