Vehicle Overview:

Mercedes-Benz's luxury sport utility vehicle gains a bigger 5.0-liter V-8 engine, which changes the name of the ML430 model to ML500 for the 2002 model year. Fresh lower bodywork and some interior revisions are also apparent.

Built in the United States, the M-Class comes in three models: the ML320, ML500 and the high-performance ML55. The ML500 has permanently engaged four-wheel drive with a Low range and a five-speed-automatic transmission with Touch Shift. Traction control works when going downhill and while accelerating. Mercedes-Benz's Tele Aid emergency communication system can summon help or track a stolen vehicle.

Exterior
Measuring only an inch longer than the rival Lexus RX 300, the four-door M-Class is 180.6 inches overall and rides a 111-inch wheelbase. At nearly 70 inches high, the M-Class is more than 4 inches taller than the RX 300. All models have a one-piece liftgate at the rear.

Interior
Seating five occupants, the M-Class has front buckets and a three-person split rear seat that folds to expand cargo space to 85 cubic feet. Leather upholstery is standard on the ML500 and ML55 and optional on the base ML320. The traditional Mercedes dashboard layout is augmented by a 5-inch LCD display with touch controls in the center console that operate climate, audio and telephone functions. On upper-end models, it also operates the standard GPS-based navigation system.

Under the Hood
The horsepower rating for the new 5.0-liter V-8 in the ML500 is 288 horsepower. The ML500 uses a five-speed-automatic transmission. Permanently engaged four-wheel drive distributes power among the four wheels as needed to maintain traction. Unlike rivals such as the BMW X5 and Lexus RX 300, Mercedes insists that the M-Class is a true offroad vehicle.

Safety
Dual-stage front airbags and side-impact airbags for both the front and rear seats are standard. Mercedes' Tele Aid emergency communication system can summon help, and it kicks in automatically if an airbag deploys to call Mercedes' roadside-assistance center. The system also can be used to track a stolen vehicle. The standard enhanced traction control system works when going both downhill and uphill or when accelerating.

Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...

XCAR marks 20-year anniversary of Senna's passing with Mercedes 190E Cosworth

Thu, 01 May 2014

While the automotive world is focusing on the twentieth anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death, there was much, much more to the legendary driver than his untimely passing at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
XCAR has the story of a younger Senna, who, by a stroke of luck, found himself matched up against a veritable dream team of nine Formula One champions, not to mention a cadre of German touring car aces. A "probably still pissed (drunk)" James Hunt, hard-driving Niki Lauda and future champion and rival Alain Prost, were in attendance for the one-off, spec race, which was put on by Mercedes-Benz, in honor of the opening of the Nürburgring's Grand Prix circuit. And Senna was on hand with the explicit goal of besting them all.
Each driver was handed a lightly modified, but brand-new 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth, a car that can best be though of as the distant ancestor of the lovable C63 AMG. As for the race itself, well, it was sort of like an introduction of what the sport could come to expect from the Brazilian.

X1, 3 Series power BMW back into global luxury autos sales lead

Thu, 14 Mar 2013

BMW managed to eke ahead of Audi for the global luxury sales crown in February. According to Bloomberg, BMW saw deliveries swell by 7 percent in February, besting the 3.2 percent jump enjoyed by Audi and giving BMW a 407-unit delivery lead over its rival last month. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, continued to falter, with the brand selling some 37,229 fewer machines than BMW, whose factories are running at full capacity to keep up with demand. Models like the X1 (shown above) enjoyed a sales increase of 40 percent in February while the company's bread-and-butter 3 Series jumped by 26 percent.
Mercedes-Benz hopes to stem its continued market share loss with the addition of the entry-level CLA sedan to its portfolio in April. The company is set to roll out an updated version of its cash-cow E-Class at the same time, and a new-generation S-Class will follow along shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the company is increasing production to meet demand for its A and B-Class models.
