SUPERCHARGED AND READY FOR THE ROAD OR YOUR AUTO COLLECTION.

Mercedes-Benz debuted the dazzling SLK230 at the height of '90s roadster revival, becoming one of the most loved German topless two-seaters. The list of standard equipment longer than the car itself includes dual-zone climate control system, leather upholstery, anti-theft alarm system, side airbags, six-speaker Alpine AM/FM/weather/CD stereo, Bose sound system, and, of course, power everything.

Drawing inspiration from the 300SL and 190SL yesteryear roadsters, the lean SLK shares their timeless proportions on a diminutive modern platform with a profile that appears to be moving even at a standstill. Parking-lot friendly, the SLK measures 19.8 inches shorter than big brother SL convertibles, and weighs 1200 pounds less. The tantalizing 25-second conversion process to a convertible is a mechanical ballet that draws crowds like a White House cigar auction. A single red button lowers the convertible top by hydraulic motors, scissoring hinges, and disengaging safety catches. Tucked neatly away in the trunk, the roof reduces the cargo space from a quite decent 12.3 cubic feet to a still-functional five. No unsightly folded cloth-and-metal skeleton exposed here to interrupt the car's lines.

Under the sloping hood lurks a 2.3-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine invigorated by a Roots-type Eaton M62 supercharger and an air-to-air intercooler, producing 185 horsepower. The silver two-door zips to 60 mph in a swift 6.9 seconds. As the revolutions climb to 4000 rpm, the supercharger whirs and the engine produces a raspy snarl that increases to a whiskey-voiced banshee scream. It is in this higher rpm zone that the SLK becomes lively, with the excitement hitting a 5800-rpm redline wall.

According to MotorTrend, overall performance was judged by 96.4 percent of respondents to be above average, no doubt bolstered by exceptional handling and braking. "We pushed the SLK through the slalom cones at 67.3 mph-faster than a Corvette. Equally impressive, the screaming silver 203SLK circled the skidpad pulling 0.89 g and halted from 60 mph in a scant 113 feet." These potent numbers translate to a responsive, firmish chassis that instills confidence and invites deep corner dives. It isn't surprising that "handling" ranked higher than "fun-to-drive" and "power" in the tally of owner-voted most-liked features.

This vehicle has never needed significant mechanical or damage repair.  It is ripe to drive now and enjoy, or restore to showroom condition for a collectible.

Maybach lost upwards of $500k on each vehicle sold

Wed, 08 Feb 2012

Daimler is shuttering Maybach in 2013 after seven years of production. In that time, the company's ultra-ultra-luxury arm managed to sell just 3,000 units, and CAR reports Daimler lost somewhere around $500,000 on each and every one of them.
Even with a ludicrous price tag of over $370,000 for an "entry" Maybach 57, the brand couldn't quite recoup the dizzying $1.33 billion Daimler poured into it since its (re)inception. Rumors ignited over a possible tie up with Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new and attractive models, but Daimler has instead decided to snuff out Maybach altogether.
We can hardly blame them.

13-year-old boy swipes dad's Mercedes, drives across Europe

Wed, 16 Jan 2013

After an argument with his adoptive parents that resulted in them taking away his mobile phone, an angry 13-year-old boy ran away from his home in Italy and headed straight to Poland to meet his biological sister. But instead of taking the train or hitching a ride, like most on the run, the young man (an accomplished go-kart racer and car enthusiast) grabbed the keys to his father's Mercedes-Benz and jumped behind the wheel for an impromptu road trip.
With less than 200 euros (about $270) in his wallet and a passport in his pocket, the youngster managed to put more than 500 miles between himself and his distraught parents, crossing two international borders in the process, before German police nabbed him just shy of the Polish border. According to reports, the vehicle was tracked - it wasn't his driving that alerted authorities to his location.
Reunited with his mother and father, who traveled to Germany to retrieve both their son and the vehicle, the young man apologized and acknowledged his error. As a result of his actions, social workers will increase checks on the family and we can be sure his parents are now hiding the keys.

Firing of M-B boss upheld

Mon, 15 Jul 2013

Ernst Lieb, the disgraced former CEO of American operations for Mercedes-Benz, will not be getting any more money from the Silver Arrow'd teat. His wrongful dismissal suit against MB's parent company, Daimler, was tossed out of a German appeals panel. This, followed the initial rejection by a lower court last year.
According to court documents acquired by Automotive News, Lieb was found to have "accepted payments of substantial value to which he - as he was aware - had no claim."
Lieb took over American operations from former CEO Paul Halata in September of 2006. Reports surfaced in October of 2011 that Lieb was dismissed from his posting at MB, with a variety of rumors swirling. Eventually, news broke that financial wrong doing was responsible for the German's firing.
