Up for sale is this fine example of a 77 Cougar. I purchased it from the original owner who bought it in 1977 from a dealer in Columbus Ohio as a weekend car.  When I got it it had only 9500 miles, and now has a bit over 10,000. The car runs and drives like new and shows very well.

The previous owner made a few changes to the car from original.  A Holley 4 bbl. and an Edelbrock manifold were installed, as well as dual exhaust. I have the original cast iron 2 bbl that goes with the car but I do not have the original carb.  He also added a chrome alternator and had the exhaust manifolds Jet Coated which are now a bit rusty.  When I got the car, age had taken its toll on the all white interior. Some of the interior parts had yellowed badly. I removed the interior and refinished the badly discolored parts to a blue that matches the factory blue of the dash. That change made a huge difference in the appearance of the interior, and in my opinion should have been the way it was trimmed originally. I replaced the leaky heater core and the deteriorated polyurethane flex joint in the steering column. Also replaced were the heater hoses and the heater control valve. The master cylinder which was leaking was also replaced, but the car still retains its original "like new" brake pads and shoes. I  repacked the front wheel bearings and serviced the caliper slides on the front brakes. The rear brake mechanisms were checked and cleaned as well.

The trunk still holds the original unused General HR78-15 spare but the other 4 have been replaced, probably because of age. The car even has its original wiper blades. The paint shows some defects and there are some gravel chips behind the wheels, but is quite nice for a 37 year old car. The vinyl top is flawless and soft and the original Polycast wheels are like new.

If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks for looking!

Ford recalling 370,000 Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car models

Fri, 30 Aug 2013

The Detroit News is reporting that Ford will recall some 370,000 Crown Victoria (pictured), Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011, for an issue regarding the lower intermediate steering shaft. 355,000 of the vehicles in question were sold in the US, with the other 15,000 sold in Canada.
The report indicates that corrosion of the lower intermediate steering shaft could cause a "loss of steering," presumably because of a partial or complete failure of the part. The report points out the dealers will inspect and replace the offending steering component for recalled cars, and may also secure a lower steering column bearing and replace the upper intermediate steering shaft as needed. The company is unaware of any reports of the faulty part causing any accidents or injuries.
Ford helpfully lists states in which corrosion is more likely to have taken place, mostly in the Snow Belt, as you might guess. Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia are listed.

NHTSA closes rollaway investigation into 1.56M Ford SUVs

Mon, 11 Mar 2013

It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.

NHTSA investigating 725k Ford, Mercury vehicles for stalling issue

Mon, 25 Feb 2013

Owners of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, listen up. According to a report on Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into these four vehicles totaling an estimated 725,000 units. The investigation appears to center around a malfunctioning throttle body on non-hybrid models of the 2005-2012 Escape and 2011-2012 Fusion. With Mercury dying off after the 2011 model year, this probe will also apply to the 2005 through 2011 Mariner and the 2011 Milan. There has been some discussion around the Escape stalling issue for some time now, but this investigation appears to be larger in scope than before.
Though not a recall yet, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 123 complaints of stalling or surging vehicles, while Ford itself has logged 1,472 complaints. The investigation report, which is posted below, seems to indicate that a faulty circuit board for the throttle body could cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which, according to NHTSA, could cause complaints of both stalling and surging.
