The Good

One owner 2005 Mercury Mountaineer with all highway miles. The vehicle is in good condition and shows wear typical of its age and mileage. The Premier version of this vehicle has every option available for this year. All features work as designed in this vehicle. It is very powerful and is equipped with a heavy duty towing package. Both front wheel hub assemblies have been replaced this week along with a brand new 60 month battery. The tires are in excellent condition, with less than 10k miles on them.

Known issues and defects.

The upper steering shaft universal joint becomes tight when the vehicles sits. Replacement was quoted at $345 installed, but the steering works fine and frees up after driving a few miles. The brakes are heavy duty slotted rotors and ceramic pads. There is a slight pulsating in the brake pedal when the brakes are applied, but there is no reduction in braking power. The paint has some defects as shown in the pictures. Slight paint peeling is starting to occur on the roof. The reserve for this SUV is set well below the KBB fair trade in value. Preposed class-action lawsuit targets 'defective' MyFord Touch

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.

Automakers tussle over owners of 'orphan' makes

When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.
R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM is offering Saturn owners $1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.
Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.
