This is a clean and desirable, very low production number first year base Toronado.  This is a very original and unmolested example of one of the first 500 Torodanos produced.  Everything is as it left the factory and is a great candidate for weekend cruises or full extent restoration.

These cars were very cutting-edge designs both body and drivetrain wise.  They were the first real front wheel drive cars offered to the public since the Cord but those are far from being considered mass produced.  The drivetrain was tested over 1.5 million miles before being commissioned and proved so stout and reliable it remained the
basic underpinning for GMs Motorhome Fleet until the early 1980's.  Thats a durability statement in itself! 

This specific example started life in a Maryland dealership but quickly went south being bought shortly after by a south Florida doctor. The car remained there till last 
year when it came to NC where it now resides with only two documented owners.  This is a lesser produced 'base model' with only about 6600 out of a proposed 40,000+
 plus models that premier year.  This also appears to be one of the first 500 produced.

This car was originally Champagne base coupe with standard black interior, reminiscent of the magazine car in many car magazines of the day. Who knows but more research may turn out this one is it... Now It comes complete with Black Standard interior and chock full of options including Air conditioning, Power steering, Power brakes, Power windows, Power seat, Rear window defrost, AM Radio, Remote driver mirror, Tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and Chrome trim rings. The door panels mounting and design further indicates early production.  Standard interior and this very early production number makes this a very desirable Olds.

This car is a good driver and a great candidate for a full restoration.  These Toronados seem very susceptible to water and moisture and most of those left are rotten. This Toronado however is virtually rust free: 99.5%  Rust Free!!! There is No rust in the floor, fenders, rockers or spare wheel area. Rear window and its rain gutters are in excellent shape! Trunk is in awesome shape with only two small holes in the trunk floor less than a dime each. The gutters/drain tubes have remained open and in good shape so the quarters have too... being stored inside most always helped as well! There is only slight scaling at the bottom of the quarters and a small hole on drivers side otherwise hardly recognizable but needs minimal attention to be perfect.  The underside of the car is factory fresh with only some minimal surface rust in places. 

A lot of new parts and maintenance have been routinely performed to keep the car in running shape but because of my duties it is seldom driven and when it is not too far- The main reason Im selling is lack of time for it.  It came from an estate sell and I have been slowly getting things up to spec.  It has been in dry storage for a good long while prior and continued since in my care.  Still has old bia-ply tires on it for example  Beside regular oil and filter changes, it has recently had a complete brake job with all new parts. This consisted of new wheel cylinders, spring kits, shoes and original drums turned as they still had a lot of life left. I even replaced the master cylinder to get a good firm feel and get any slop out of the system. It worked and car stops as good if not better than factory. Cost- $600 Also I went ahead and put two brand new hard to find CV axles in to makes sure everything was in good running order. Cost- $400 Last year I sent the carburetor off to a renowned restorer who plated and reworked/rebuilt the carb to factory specs.  Cost- $500 It functions properly making the car very easy to crank and drive and looks perfect.  It also received a good as new gas tank from Desert Auto out of Arizona because a new replacement is not reproduced or available. Cost- $400  There is not much mechanical work left to do but the headlights are getting slower and slower to come up... probably a vacuum leak as the trunk release works intermittently and its vacuum operated as well. Will need some simple exhaust work to be driveable anywhere you might want to go.  Motor runs strong as ever with no problems now it has the nice carb with factory settings. It is very smooth. 

The interior is in pretty good shape with the main concern being the dash as it has started to pull up lately. The seat are in good to fair shape with a  tear on the side of the drivers seat which visible in the pictures and there is one tear in the stitching on the actual seat part but it is in the seam.  car will need a headliner as all seem to. Air conditioning is not in working condition as of now but not stuck so get some R12 and dont see why she would not work but again this may just be a vacuum issue as this too is vacuum controlled. Obviously a new set of vacuum lines would do this car great as the things most heavily dependent on vacuum are compromised slightly. 

This is an awesome example of Modern Auto Art and Design that deserves a collector or aficionados attention. As of late these cars are gaining in provenance and values are on the rise. Being one of the first 500 made makes it truly a unique automobile to enjoy and help preserve!

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
