1997 Pontiac Trans AM Convertible with 383 stroker
OK here is the story plain and simple. I bought this car over 8 years ago on EBAY. The car had an engine fire so that is why it is sold as salvage. I had it shipped here to Pittsburgh, and was going to put a new engine in it and give it to my daughter for her 16th birthday. I had a local shop pull the motor and all of the components and harnesses from the engine compartment to start the rebuild. Since the motor was out, and was going be taken apart and reassembled to make sure it was not effected by the fire, I decided to add some horsepower and opted for a stroker kit for the LT-1. All the parts were ordered, and the motor was taken to a machine shop to have the stroker kit installed. That is where things take a turn. The shop went bankrupt, and my motor sat in a locked shop for a year unitl the bankrupcy was settled. Finally, it was returned, and the mechanics installed it along with all the components under the hood from a doner car. After the install, there were several issues with the wiring harness which they could not troubleshoot. and the car sat again. This car was not ready for my daughters birthday so all interest was lost in this project, and I stuck it in my warehouse until last year when I towed it to Fort Pitt Classic Cars. A $1000 and another wiring harness, and finally the car runs. I drove this car for the first time last fall from their shop to my home (10 miles). I do not want anything to do with this car anymore. I figured I wait until spring and put it here fior someone who wants it. This is going to be a no reserve auction, because I want it gone. Here is what I have in it. I bought it for $3600, shipped to Pittsburgh from CA $700, Stroker Kit $1,800 Machining and Motor assembly $1200. Donor car parts $1500. Labor for removal and reinstallation $2000. 2nd wiring harness parts and labor $1000. That is $11,800 that I invested. The car starts runs and drives. It has sat in various stages of completion for 8 years and for it to be roadworthy it needs to be gone through and some things need to be addressed. There is a crack in the windshield, but i dont think it is in the drivers view, but you should put in a new windshield. The check engine light, abs, and airbag lights are on. so I'm sure you need to trroubleshoot the system or reset the computer, because the airbags never blew. I'm sure it sitting for this lenght of time wasnt good for all the electrical connections. This would be a great buy for someone who knows how to work on these cars, or if you have one that is wrecked or worn out. This is a project, and will need work so please do not think you are going to drive this home and that is it. I have a 100% rating and want to be honest. If you do not know what you are doing then this is not for you. I'm guessing this will need about $1000 of labor, parts, sensors, troubleshooting, some 4 new tires because these ones look good but they are over 8 years old and dryrotted, paint. and some other wrench turning, but the basics are there. The motor is worth $2500 alone. I will be uploading more pics and videos of the car, engine,and interior so please be patient. I have the original radio. but it is out of the car because I was going to install a better unit. I put my fist on the bottom of the drivers seat this winter when i was starting the engine, and cracked the seat bottom. There are some trim pieces missing from the dash area. They were misplaced when the wiring harness was installed. I will look for them but am not making any promises. I do have the plastic cover that hides the convertible top when the convertible top is down. I bought a used fender and a aftermarket ram-air hood for $400, because the original was fire damaged. You will notice in the picture that they do not match and need to be properly primed and painted. I have the original hood and it will be included with the car.

Watch as Hot Rod goes from El Paso to LA the hard way
Tue, 21 Feb 2012There are few things simultaneously more romantic and idiotic than taking a road trip in a beaten-down heap of a car. Trust us. We know. David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod Magazine fame recently undertook an epic trip from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles with the express goal of doing so for under $1,500, including the purchase price of a vehicle, food, lodging, repairs and, most importantly, fuel. With this in mind, the duo settled on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina for a lofty $650. Hilarity ensues.
Realizing that no one actually wants a Catalina sulking around the shop, Freiburger and Finnegan put the car up for auction on eBay Motors the instant they had the title in hand. By the time they rolled into Hot Rod HQ, the vehicle sold for a little over $500.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
1969 Pontiac GTO Judge vs. 2006 GTO, which Goat gets your vote?
Mon, 08 Sep 2014The Pontiac GTO was perhaps the most iconic muscle car of the '60s and early '70s. With its beefy V8 and color palette screaming for attention, it summarized in a single vehicle everything that made the era so appealing to many young people. Pontiac tried to collect just a few drops of that aura again in the 2000s with a revived GTO, but with decidedly mixed results. The performance was still there with its big V8, but the looks never quite lived up to the powertrain. Now, Generation Gap wants to know which of these Goats is the one to own.
Things are skewed immediately because the 2006 GTO here is a real ringer. It comes from famous tuner Ken Lingenfelter's collection, and it's a one-off example partially fettled by GM Performance boasting a twin-turbocharged LS2 V8 with a claimed 750 horsepower and a wide-body kit. This Goat definitely isn't what you're going to find just browsing for one to buy in the newspaper. Still, dip the throttle just a little, and this GTO pulls like a freight train. It's enough to turn the two hosts into giggling schoolboys behind the wheel.
The '69 GTO Judge here is also out of Lingenfelter's collection, but this one is all stock with a 400-cubic-inch (6.6-liter) V8 and a Ram Air hood for a claimed 366 hp. It might not have the unbelievable power of the turbo '06, but it makes up for it with style to spare.
