Up for auction is a unique find that has been stored for several years.  Its a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition Y82 Hurst Edition.  I bought the car with the intention of restoring it, but after learning that the engine had been changed in the past, i decided not to go any further with the project.  Visual inspection appeared to look like the engine had never been removed.  This leads me to believe that it was changed sometime when the car was close to new.  The car itself has 65,000 miles on it and the engine is unknown milage.  It does not smoke when started or driven.  I did a search on the engine numbers and determined it is a 1974 L-78 400. I have all the engine numbers if needed.  The car runs and drives and will need a tuneup and brake work. I say this because the brake lines to the rear are leaking.  It does stop.  There is an exhaust leak in the manifold on the drivers side, possible donut gasket, not sure.  It starts and idles fine, will drive down the road, just seems a bit slugish.  Im sure can use a carb rebuild, as well as the tuneup.  There is a fair amount of rust in the frame rail section and quarter panels.  Mostly contained to the rear portion of the rails where the leaf spring mounts as well as the rear panel.  The doors also have rust.  The front clip is in very nice shape with a good size dent in the right fender.  The Interior in in super condition with all the SE trim.  Dash is near mint, seats are nice with some burns and small wear spot in the drivers lower back edge.  The console is nice with the exception of two small speakers added to the front on each side.  All glass is perfect and appears to have a new windshield.  Door glass is clean with minor to no wear scratches in them and go up and down easily with the power window motors.  Carpet is very nice but will need new sill plates. The head liner is in tacked but sagging around the edges.  All lights work on the car with the exception of the dash lights. I have not looked into it.  To my surprise, i charged the air conditioning and it blows cold. As for the paint, u can see in the photos that it is mostly original.  I believe any paint work done to the car was also done several years ago when the car was fairly new. It has the correct snowflake rims and the tires hold air and drive, but should be replaced.  If i left anything out, please feel free to message me and i will answer all questions.  PLEASE know that i have the car for sale locally and will end the auction if it sells.  I feel i have described the car very honestly and would welcome any and all questions and comments as im not an expert on these cars.  If i overlooked something, or forgot to mention something, AGAIN, send me questions.  Thanks for looking and i hope to give this car the home with someone who is looking for this type of a project and not destroy it.  Feel free to call or text also 989-670-2700.  The car is located in Michigan.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.

STUDY: Ford owns brand loyalty in 2009; Scorned Saturn, Pontiac buyers will look outside of GM

Fri, 16 Oct 2009

Ford buyers appear to love their cars more than customers of any other automotive brand, returning back to the American automaker when it comes time to purchase their next vehicle. According to a study by Experian Automotive, six of the top 10 vehicles for customer brand loyalty wear badges from the Blue Oval. That includes the Ford Fusion (62.4 percent), Ford Edge (57.9 percent), Ford Five Hundred/Taurus (56 percent), Ford Freestyle (51.9 percent), Ford Escape (49.4 percent) and the Ford Focus (47.57 percent).
Other vehicles making up the top 10 include the Toyota Prius (52 percent), Chevy Impala (51.7 percent), Toyota Camry (47.8 percent) and Toyota Corolla (47.56 percent). This brings up an interesting question: With the closing of automotive brands like Saturn and Pontiac, where are those buyers to turn for their next automotive purchase?
Apparently, not back to General Motors. According to Experian, Pontiac owners are most likely to look to the Ford lineup for their next car or truck and Saturn shoppers will switch to Toyota or Honda - not particularly surprising given that Saturn was meant to compete with import brands. Experian predicts that GM's overall market share will fall from 20 percent to about 17.5 percent, with most of the slack being picked up by Ford, Honda and Toyota.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
