Introduction: Up for auction is an extremely nice, 3 owner, 1978 Pontiac Trans Am WS6. This car features the first year for the WS6 and has a lot of rare options. Not to mention the car brandishes 99% of its original paint. The car is an extremely nice, very original, Matching Numbers, Trans Am with a nicely preserved 67,000 miles. Let's take a walk around it and see what she has to offer.

Exterior: Pouring over all of these classic Trans Am lines is a lustrous code 19 Starlight black finish. The body is 100% original Detroit iron and in excellent condition. The paint is in very good condition as well and maintains 99% originality. There is an area on the rear driver's side quarter panel that was blended after a scratch was repaired. There was also a scratch on the hood that was blended to hide a scratch. Other than those two small areas the rest is original. There is some paint checking on the driver's side "B" pillar (see pics) as well there are some small rust bubbles on the lower driver's door (see pics) There are a couple of other spots that has some pulling (see pics) Again this is all original body and paint that is razor straight and looks perfect from 5 feet away. The body is very straight and has a mirror like reflection. All the glass is in great condition and is chip, scratch, and crack free.  The Fisher  T-tops fit snuggly into place, are in great condition, and seal very well. The original Factory Fisher T-Top bags are included with the car. Every light, signal, and indicator work properly. As you can see even the original, unpainted, wheel spoiler welting is in pristine condition.

Interior: Straight off the showroom floor, this nicely appointed muscle car interior is as mint as they come  The original black vinyl interior is in outstanding condition and has been nicely preserved as well. The seats show very minimal wear with no burns, stains, rips, or holes. Carpet, door panels, headliner, console, etc are in great shape as well. The interior is totally complete and functional. All of the gauges function properly, gauge lights are bright and work nicely with the dimmer. I have owned several of these cars and have not seen one that the every light, switch, and system function properly and reliably. Even the clock keeps accurate time and the cigarette lighter actually works. Power windows work well.

This car features:

Pulse wipers

Rare radio delete option

Power trunk release

Rear window defrost

Cruise control

Power windows

Air conditioning

All 4 original GM floor mats

Fisher T-Top bags

The air conditioning works and blows very cold. Heat works great too and the blower motor functions at all speeds. Power windows move with ease and seal very nicely. There is a small wear hole in the carpet on the driver's side from the heal of a shoe resting on it over the years. Other than that the interior is perfect! The dash and rear package tray are straight and free of holes, cracks, or warpage.

Mechanical: Turn the key and bring to life the numbers matching 6.6L 400 Pontiac V8. The engine runs very strong and is incredibly smooth. There has never been any leaks or smoking of any kind.  The odometer reads 67,757 and runs very well. In 1996 she was titled with 53,500 miles. She always starts and has never left me stranded. She runs cool all day long and maintains about 60psi+ oil pressure at cruising speed. The TH350 trans shifts out nice and firm the way it is supposed. The car handles and drives very tight and effortless. The steering is responsive and tight with no slop. The brakes bring everything to a halt promptly and smoothly. The floors, trunk, and frame rails are in outstanding condition. The handling of the car is very responsive and stable. It is a blast to drive! Everything under the hood is completely original with every factory valve, vacuum line, reservoir, and wiring still in tact and uncut. The original owner worked for the Holley company and installed one of the first aluminum intakes on this car. I still have the original complete manifold setup that goes with the car.

Paperwork on the car:

Original window sticker (with copy)

Both original build sheets (with copies)

Any piece of paperwork that came with the car when purchased

Several maintenance receipts

Warranty booklets

Original owners manual

Original dealership model brochures

PHS documentation

Original service and parts manuals

Watch as Hot Rod goes from El Paso to LA the hard way

Tue, 21 Feb 2012

There are few things simultaneously more romantic and idiotic than taking a road trip in a beaten-down heap of a car. Trust us. We know. David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod Magazine fame recently undertook an epic trip from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles with the express goal of doing so for under $1,500, including the purchase price of a vehicle, food, lodging, repairs and, most importantly, fuel. With this in mind, the duo settled on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina for a lofty $650. Hilarity ensues.
Realizing that no one actually wants a Catalina sulking around the shop, Freiburger and Finnegan put the car up for auction on eBay Motors the instant they had the title in hand. By the time they rolled into Hot Rod HQ, the vehicle sold for a little over $500.
The video is part of a new series called Roadkill that should document similar adventures. Keep your eyes peeled for more calamity-soaked clips in the near future. In the meantime, hit the jump to check it out yourself.

GM recalling 426,000 sedans over faulty transmission shift cable

Fri, 21 Sep 2012

General Motors is recalling some 426,240 sedans that may have a faulty transmission shift cable, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report this morning. The recall concerns a fault within four-speed automatic transmissions equipped on 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models, and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models.
The report specifies that tabs on the transmission shift cable may fracture and separate. Such a fault could cause a discrepancy between the actual position of the transmission and the apparent position of the shift lever.
GM is currently working to notify owners of the vehicles in question, and dealers will check and replace shift cables free of charge. Scroll down to read the complete NHTSA report.

'67 Chevy Corvair convertible vs. '86 Pontiac Fiero in cult classic showdown

Fri, 22 Aug 2014

Every few a decades, the folks running General Motors lose their minds briefly try to market a car that public doesn't see coming and often aren't ready for. In the '60s there was the rear-engine, air-cooled Chevrolet Corvair, then the mid-engine Pontiac Fiero in the '80s and the completely bizarre Chevy SSR in the 2000s. What all of these had in common was that they bucked the trend for American models of their era, for better or worse. The latest episode of Generation Gap tasked the hosts with finding two cult classic vehicles to choose between; they came come up with two of these quirky products from The General.
On the classic side, there's a 1967 Chevy Corvair Monza convertible. Being from later in the production run, it wears slightly more aerodynamic styling than the earlier, boxier examples. Hanging out back is an air-cooled, 2.7-liter flat-six pumping out a robust 95 horsepower. In the other corner is the somewhat more modern 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with a mid-mounted, 2.5-liter "Iron Duke" four-cylinder, an engine nearly ubiquitous in GM cars of the '80s.
Judging by when they were new, the Corvair was far more successful than the Fiero with over 1.8 million sold. Of course, Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed kind of poisoned the well, even if the poor safety reputation wasn't entirely deserved. The Fiero on the other hand only lasted for a few model years before shuffling off, but it eventually got its own performance boost with the V6 version and rather attractive GT models. Check them both out in the video and tell us in Comments which you want in your garage.
