For Trans Am fans out there, this is a really nice and unusual car. So much can be said, it is hard to know where to start. A bit of history first:
- This car has spent its whole life in Arizona. It was delivered here when new and it has remained in the desert so no issues with rust with this one. I am the third owner. The previous owner was a garage owner and mechanic. This was his wife's car and he decided to restore it. I will share with you what I know from what I have been told by him. The body was removed from the chassis and was painted by a real pro. This was probably twenty years ago but the paint job today looks amazing, except for a couple of little nicks. Everyone who sees this car always ask how long ago it was painted. When I got the car it had been sitting in a garage for the better part of those twenty year. I washed it and hand polished it a couple of times and the shine is really spectacular.
He also rebuilt the engine and Transmission. I was told that not one internal component of that engine rebuilt was stock. I can believe it because this engine runs very strong with incredible smoothness. The transmission is a TCI high performance transmission with a B&M Shifter. The car will easily spin its wheels even in reverse! The engine and transmission combo has less than 1000 miles since the rebuilt, even though it took place a long time ago. The car just sat in a garage waiting to be finished.
So all that was done before I got the car. As good as a mechanic the previous owner was, he hated interior work. As a result the inside needed a lot of attention. That is when I came in.
I pulled everything out of the car and we proceeded with insulating and sound deadening the interior. We re-upholstered the original seats and bolstered the front seats for better cornering compared to the stock flat seats. They are extremely comfortable and keep you planted pretty well. Everything inside is custom made. Check out the Bird on the headliner, the diamond stitched suede inserts on the seats with matching gear shift boot and custom door panels. This is definitely not a stock interior. New carpet with matching floor mats, the dashboard was also covered with hand stitched vinyl to match the rest of the car. All the plastic pieces elsewhere were also covered with vinyl for a classier look.
The original stereo system was obsolete. I installed a Clarion single disc CD player with I-Pod connection and bluetooth. There are two large amplifiers custom fitted in the trunk along with a single 12 inch woofer. Up front, there are two round speakers, two tweeters under the dash and two hidden 6X9 behind the back seats. The sound system is crisp and powerful.
The latest addition to the car was a complete new dual exhaust system with two Flowmaster Series 44 Original muffler and brand new Trans Am chrome tips. The sound is absolutely addicting.
The suspension was also upgraded by the previous owner. The car has a posi-traction limited slip differential rear end, KYB shocks and upgraded suspension hardware. The gas tank was also replaced when the body was re-assembled.
This is a very nice car and one everyone comments on. It will be sorely missed.

Lutz says Washington killed Pontiac, next G6 was to be ATS derivative

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

How many people think Buick or GMC should have gotten the axe instead of Pontiac? You can't see it, but I'm raising my hand. Autoweek reports that former Vice Chairman of GM, Bob Lutz, has indicated that things didn't have to end up the way they did.
"The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.'"
In a talk given at the Petersen Automotive Museum for the Inside the MotoMan Studio series, Lutz says "The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.' So, it goes. And when the guy who is handing you the check for $53 billion says, 'I don't want Pontiac, drop Pontiac or you don't get the money,' it doesn't take you very long to make up your mind." Lutz even added that the next-generation Pontiac G6 would have benefitted from the rear-wheel-drive platform of the Cadillac ATS. How awesome would that have been?

David Hasselhoff's own KITT replica up for auction

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

Depending on when and where you grew up, the name David Hasselhoff likely conjures up images of Knight Rider, Baywatch, pop singer, or possibly a washed-up TV actor, but one thing that can never be taken away from The Hoff is his connection to one of the greatest automotive icons in pop culture. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, usually shortened to simply KITT, was the real star of Knight Rider for many fans. Based on a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the car combined snarky quips for comedy relief and stunts to provide much of the show's actions. Now, Julien's Auctions is selling Hasselhoff's own replica as part of a larger sale of the actor's personal memorabilia collection.
This recreation is based on a 1986 Firebird and comes with all of the tech on the inside that now seems hilariously outdated, like the yoke steering wheel and plethora of buttons. The interior also thoughtfully includes a voice box with over 4,000 sound clips from the show. With a 5.0-liter V8 and an automatic transmission, performance is likely adequate and period correct. According to the listing, this car was created by fans and given to the Hoff. Sadly, the replica doesn't convert to Super Pursuit Mode like KITT could in later seasons, and we most associate KITT with conventional front-hinged doors to go with the power t-tops and ejector seats.
Bidding currently sits $27,500 with eight bids, since starting at $15,000. Julien's predicts it will sell for between $30,000 and $50,000. If there is some nostalgia for KITT in your heart, there is still plenty of time to bid.

Automakers tussle over owners of 'orphan' makes

Thu, 10 May 2012

When General Motors put down several of its brands in recent years, it also let loose thousands of brand-loyal customers who will eventually need another car.
R.L. Polk Associates estimates there are more than 18 million cars from 16 discontinued makes on the road today. Those "orphan owners" have sales-hungry competitors seeing dollar signs. GM is offering Saturn owners $1,000 cash toward a Chevy Cruze, Cadillac CTS or a GMC Acadia. Ford is giving its Mercury lease customers a chance to get out of their contracts with no early-termination penalty and offering to waive six remaining payments if they drive off in a Ford or Lincoln.
Edmunds.com research shows the efforts are paying off somewhat for GM, with 39 percent of Pontiac owners, 37 percent of Hummer owners and 31 percent of Saturn owners taking delivery of another GM-branded vehicle. But that leaves as much as 69 percent of owners going elsewhere. Ford, Honda and Toyota seem to be attracting many former GM owners.
