This car technically belongs to my mom, but I purchased it originally in July 2006. I picked the car up in Fort Wayne, Indiana for $6,500 and drove it 13 hours straight to Richmond, Va. Incredible experience! We had a fantastic first year together, in which I had the pedal assembly rebuilt with a new master cylinder and updated brake cables etc. Had zero issues.
In 2007, I decided to "reward" the faithful 912 with a motor rebuild. I picked the wrong guys to do the engine work (took 3x as long as promised, $1,000+ additional, etc). So I had a different mechanic install a rebuilt transmission. All of this put us without the car for almost the entire year. Horrible. When I finally picked it up with the new motor and transmission, we made it only about 2 hours before the motor seized (no oil!). I could never prove which mechanic was ultimately to blame. Out of money and frustrated, we parked it.
For the next couple of years or so, we slowly replaced and/or repaired the damaged parts (with mechanics' consultation) and gathered what I believe to be all of the necessary pieces to rebuild the motor. Simultaneously, we took the car to a guy in Martinsville, VA to repair rust etc and paint the 912. It has barely seen the light of day since the body work. Until January, we kept it in a storage unit. It has been in my parking lot under a car cover for the past few months.
The interior would be ok with a good cleaning, but there are a few scratches and such as I have only done "necessary" repairs. We will include some updated seatbelts, still in the box. Also cool, is that I had a cd player concealed in the glove box back in 2006 with some MB Quart speakers in the doors.
Today, the 912 is physically in solid shape. The motor is somewhat if not completely "all there", with ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. The transmission has only a couple of hours on it. Wipers, motor, transmission, exhaust, are out of the car, but will be included. Heater boxes are rusted out, but I'll include them for whatever that is worth. Actual mileage is unknown.
Selling this car breaks my heart after everything we've been through. Not to mention that we will never recover the time and money invested. But we are out of time and money (at least for now), and must sell. I sincerely hope our 912 finds a good home.
Best,
-Curtis

Despite premium carmakers going downmarket, luxury auto sales stick at 10-11%
Thu, 16 Jan 2014According to research conducted by global information company IHS Automotive, the leporine birthing of new models by luxury manufacturers over the past six years hasn't increased their market share in the US. Even as car sales reached 15.6 million units, IHS says what's happened instead is that luxury buyers are merely moving from one brand to another, moving from larger luxury vehicles into hot segments like compact luxury crossovers or leaving the market at the same rate as other buyers enter.
Whether broken out by makes or by segment, market share has rollercoastered inside a narrow band from 10.5 to 11.5 percent since "at least" 2008. Closer investigation reveals the shifting boundaries in the aspirational pond, with brands like Mercedes-Benz and Audi gaining territory as Lexus and Lincoln lost it, and Saab and Hummer were buried, dead, under it. One neat note is that Tesla has gone from a share of zip to .12 percent.
The subcompact and compact crossover segments show growth, with those little high-riders jumping from .3 percent to 1.16 percent of overall industry sales. Their rise, though, is concomitant with the decline of four other segments: compact and midsize cars and fullsize cars and SUVs. We think the next few years that will tell if the small-car expansion can overcome the large-car retraction, with a phalanx of smaller offerings like the CLA only recently hitting the market and others like the GLA, Macan and Q1 doing so in the near future.
Porsche Cayman, Boxster caught in GTS trim
Sat, 18 Jan 2014A few months ago, we reported on some leaked information from an internal presentation for upcoming Porsche models. This included details about the Macan and the 911 Targa, which we now know to be true, but there was also talk about GTS versions of the Cayman and Boxster.
Well, it appears we're now getting our first look at these GTS models, as our spy photographers have just snapped a pair of Porsche prototypes out testing - one Cayman and one Boxster.
Right off the bat, we can see that both GTS-branded cars will get a slightly tweaked exterior with new fascias (bringing LED daytime running lights to the Cayman) and air diffusers at the rear. The true gem of these cars will be the added horsepower to the tune of 340 horsepower - a 15-hp bump. A manual transmission will likely be standard, as will Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).
UK Porsche GT3 owners are irked that other countries are getting better deals
Sun, 27 Apr 2014Porsche 911 GT3 owners in the United Kingdom are up in arms, but it's not for the reason you might think. Okay, well it sort of is. See, it's been fairly well documented that 911 GT3 owners have had their cars grounded over concerns that the engines could catch fire. Porsche is rushing to build and install replacement engines in all 800 or so cars, scattered around the globe.
This isn't really the issue. The problem for these British owners is compensation. While the car's have been grounded, car notes still need to be paid. To deal with this, American GT3 owners are being paid $2,000 per month. German owners get 175 euros ($242 at today's rates) per day while a GT3 owner in Dubai is allegedly receiving $12,000 (it's unclear if this is a lump sum or a monthly payment). Basically, if you aren't able to drive your six-figure super car, you shouldn't have to pay for it. Seems reasonable regardless of the make.
British owners, though, aren't being compensated, and for 30 to 35 owners, that's not acceptable. They've banded together and are led by Sunil Mehra.
