BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 912E:

In the autumn of 1975, the 912E, internally designated at the factory as the Type 923, became the companion to the 911S. Primarily sold in North America, rising fuel prices and lowered U.S. speed limits helped make the 912E a practical model. Production of the 914/4 had just ended, and the water-cooled four-cylinder 924s had not yet arrived. As noted in factory advertising the 912E was powered by the 2.0 liter fuel-injected 914-derived engine "which took Porsche engineers two years to develop and refine", and shared the chassis and body styling of the 911S coupe. The Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system used is often referred to as the Air Flow Controlled (AFC) system later adapted for use in the 911 series.

Options included electric sunroof, limited slip, and air conditioning. With its 21 U.S. gallon fuel tank and fuel-efficient engine, the 912E's driving range may be the best of any Porsche ever made to date, 600+ miles.  This vehicle is near-showroom quality and it quite the looker.  It has been very well maintained and was the recipient of a recent tune-up and a new set of tires.

By the end of production, the Zuffenhausen factory had produced 2092 912Es, delivered primarily to North America. The final 912E constructed also became the last air-cooled four-cylinder car produced by Porsche.

eGarage video features Helmuth Bott's personal Porsche 959 prototype

Fri, 12 Apr 2013

"We thought we were going to build a super-911," said Peter Schutz, former CEO of Porsche AG of the development of the Porsche 959. That was before it started getting expensive. At that point, Helmuth Bott, Porsche R&D director got frightened. Costs ballooned because of the all-wheel drive, sequential turbocharging and other technology Porsche had never even thought about when it set out to build a 911 to compete in Group B. Schutz continued, "The amount of resources we were committing got totally out of hand." Instead of pulling the plug, Bott doubled down and drew on the strength of his brilliant team to build a car whose impact is still echoing aross the industry.
"It's probably one of our most prized possessions" says Don Leatherwood, Director of the Brumos collection where Dr. Bott's personal prototype resides, and where Frazer Spowart went to see the car and create a video for eGarage. Check out the sights and sounds of the 959 before it was the 959, and get personal takes on the car from Hurley Haywood, Peter Schutz and Don Leatherwood. Keep reading to see the video.

2015 Porsche Cayenne spotted with facelift

Wed, 03 Apr 2013

Although it's only been a few years since the current Porsche Cayenne was introduced, Porsche seems to be working on a midcycle update for its big SUV possibly in time to welcome the smaller Macan. As seen in these recent spy shots, it looks like the Cayenne will be getting a minor face- and butt-lift, but it's hard to say what other changes are in store or when the updated model will hit showrooms.
Up front, expect the Cayenne's new face to resemble what was just revealed on the 2014 Panamera, and we could also see this SUV using some of the new engines introduced on the Panamera including the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 or maybe even the E-Hybrid model. We're guessing that the new Cayenne could debut sometime next year likely for the 2015 model year. In the meantime, check out the gallery of spy shots above.

Mon, 24 Mar 2014

As one of the greatest sports car manufacturers of all time, when Porsche puts out a new, ultra-exclusive hypercar, enthusiasts tend to stand up and take note. Jay Leno is no exception, and now, the funnyman is finally getting his time with awesome 918 Spyder.
With his 1963 Porsche 356 and his 2005 Carrera GT flanking a Liquid Silver 918, Leno takes us through the basics of this plug-in hybrid roadster alongside Daniel Eastman of Porsche North America. Following the chat, Leno and Eastman take the German-plated car through the streets of California, testing it in a number of modes and even going on a short, all-electric freeway cruise.
If you're looking to learn more about the 918, or to just here its glorious gas engine at work, you'll want to scroll down and take a look at the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage.
