No reserve auction on this rare 1974 Porsche 914 LE Can Am all matching-numbers car.  This great running "Bumblebee" is one of less than 50 Can Am Bumblebee cars with a COA and is in unmolested and almost all original condition. California car most of its life, tagged until November 2013.

Recent work done to the car includes:
Rebush the pedal section
Replaced clutch and throttle cables
Adjustments to trigger points, and fuel pressure, and timing
Replaced ignition cap, wire, coil
Reseal and rehose injection system
Fixed door handle (passenger side, driver side, and trunks all open and close with no problem and with same key as ignition)
New wiper blade
New fuel pump
New hoses and lines
Fuse service (new fuses, cleaned connections, etc)
New rollers for rear trunk
many other new parts
Overall tune-up, oil change, etc
Everything opens/closes/locks as it should

The car starts up, runs well (after a five minute warm up), shifts, handles great and is a blast to drive.  Always getting thumbs up from other drivers.  Been driving this car on the highway and there are no problems with cruising at 80 MPH.  Most of the remaining things are cosmetic to get this car back to it's factory condition.

I've owned this car for 16 years.  The previous owner had the yellow painted over and the paint from the wheels removed.  The car has been slightly lowered, has Konis on the corners, has the euro tail lenses, but is otherwise stock.  I know you Can Am purists out there will say "But there is vinyl on the roll bar and the trim isn't black" and yes, they would be correct.  While this might be strange for a Can Am car, the COA says it all.  If the previous owner added this (who would do such a thing?), or if it was something from the factory, I don't know.  As you can see from the COA there were Sealed Beam Headlights, Tinted Windshield, and US Equipment in addition to the CanAm package.  Door tag, headlight motor covers, matching engine, and yellow paint peeking through some of the rocker paint all match what you'd expect.  These cars have been going up in value quite a bit over the last few years and are getting harder to find.

A couple of things that will need attention to complete this car:
Change taillights to US lenses
Replace left front turn lenses (front and side marker) as these are cracked
Repaint (the entire car needs paint, if you can't tell) the car to include the yellow trim pieces/wheels
Add sun visors (these fell out of place and I can no longer find them)
Fix (or replace) crack in the dash
Fix odometer (it has never worked since I've owned the car and the actual mileage is unknown)
Fix clock (when doesn't this need to be fixed on these cars?)
Fix dent on driver's rear fender
Replace battery tray (still holds the battery but needs attention)
Rubber around the windshield (inside) and around the top could use replacing
Top needs refinishing
Stereo seems to cut out at times, not really sure why
A little bit of surface rust is present in the rear trunk
Seats will need to be redone as they are pretty shredded

My mechanic says that the underbody and hellhole look all right.  If you'd like to talk with him, please let me know.

If you want to insure this car with Haggarty, it's about $300/year and their "low end" value on 914s (not even taking the CanAm aspect into consideration) is $15,000.  The car is listed on the CanAm Registry found at bowlsby.net/914/CanAm/914CanAmRegistry.htm

I have video of the car running if requested, and all of the pictures of the car have been taken in the last three days.

I've tried to best describe any issues with the car but there are no warranties, guarantees, or refunds of any kind.  Inspections are highly recommended and I can help arrange that with a local (to me) mechanic of your choice (at your expense, of course).  I may be able to drive the car to you (after final payment) for a fee, or can help get the car to a transport company for shipping.  $1000 deposit expected within 24 hours of close of auction, and remaining money due within 7 days of auction end.  I can hold the car for 30 days from end of auction as well, if needed.  Please ask any/all questions before end of auction.

One other thing - I will be out of town 5/25-6/2 - Please keep this in mind when bidding.

Happy bidding!

Toyota tops Kelley Blue Book's Resale Value Awards

Tue, 27 Nov 2012

Kelley Blue Book announced its annual Best Resale Value Award winners, and we weren't too surprised to see the list dominated by Japanese automakers - mainly Toyota and Honda. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota.
To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively.
The overall top 10 models for the best resale value in 2013 are, in alphabetical order:

Porsche announces plan to replace 911 GT3 engines

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

About a month back, we reported that Porsche was suspending delivery of its 911 GT3 due to reported incidents of the engine bursting into flames. A few days later, Porsche told owners of the new track-ready models not to drive their cars and had their local dealers pick up the cars in question. Just a couple of days ago, we reported that Porsche was working on a fix, and now we have the official details.
Following an internal investigation prompted by two such incidents, Porsche has confirmed that is has identified the problem as resulting "from a loosened screw joint on the connecting rod." The loose connecting rod, Porsche found, damaged the crankcase, which in turn resulted in oil leaking and then - in at least two cases - igniting.
Our source is unaware of Porsche being contacted by GT3 owners concerned about the impact of a replacement engine on their car's collectibility or resale value.

Muffler Man gets racing suit to mark progress on Porsche Experience Center

Sat, 19 Oct 2013

In a dramatic change of careers, a fiberglass Muffler Man statue on the side of a busy Los Angeles freeway, formerly known as "Golf Guy," traded in his clubs for a Porsche driver's suit a couple days ago. It's no coincidence, as he's standing on land that the German automaker bought from the Dominguez Hills Golf Course a couple years ago to build its west coast Porsche Experience Center - which will be complete with a test track, restoration and maintenance facilities, a cafe and restaurant, a home for Porsche Motorsports North America and more, when it's finished in the fourth quarter of 2014.
The Porsche Muffler Man will serve as the gatekeeper to the 53-acre center and overlook the test track on the side of the 405 freeway. We can't think of a better job for a fiberglass giant that used to watch golf all day than to watch Porsche road cars and racecars getting wrung out on a test track in the middle of LA. Since Muffler Men are quite adaptable, we're sure this one will fit into his new role in no time - just as easily as he can double as Paul Bunyan.
Check out the press release below for more information on the Muffler Man and the experience center, which could be the ultimate adult playground when it's finished.
