Model Overview
The new 9-5 has an all-turbo powertrain lineup, bringing the power of larger engines without the fuel economy disadvantages of upsizing. The Turbo4 model is powered by a 220-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. 9-5 Turbo6 models come with a 300-hp, 2.8L turbo V6. The smaller engine is E85-capable, meaning that it can be fueled with a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol. Transmissions on either model include a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Turbo6 models include Saab's XWD all-wheel drive system--a system that's geared both for sport-minded driving as well as inclement weather, using an electronic limited-slip rear differential and center differential system to send power quickly to the wheels with more traction. In normal driving, the system sends about 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels. Completely redesigned for 2011 with a sleek, clean shape on the outside and an interior that builds on Saab's past, the new 9-5 is about seven inches longer than the 9-5 it replaces, with most of that added length going to legroom in the cabin. The interior itself carries what Saab calls a "progressive Scandinavian design" and is appointed with materials that stand out in its class; gauges and controls are more clearly inspired by Saab's aircraft heritage. All models now get an engine start-stop button on the center console between the front seats and backseat passengers can get their own temperature control. At the top of the new 9-5 range is the performance-oriented 9-5 Aero, which adds more aggressive aerodynamics in front and in back, plus fog lamps, adaptive cornering lamps, rectangular exhaust tips and larger 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires. The sporty Aero model doesn't ride as stiffly as you might expect, thanks to DriveSense, an adaptive chassis control system that includes three modes--comfort, sport and intelligent, which firms up the dampers only when needed. Standard equipment on the Aero is greatly expanded compared to the other models--to include variable-effort quick-ratio power steering, a panoramic moonroof, bi-xenon headlamps, perforated leather upholstery, sport seats, remote start and upgraded trim throughout. Also among the innovative tech features available on the 9-5 are an aircraft-style head-up display, bi-xenon adaptive lighting, automatic headlamp leveling and dynamic parking assistance--all part of the Technology Package. The 11-speaker premium surround sound system from harman/kardon, includes an 8-inch touch-screen with navigation system and 10 GB for music storage. A backseat DVD player is also available, including wireless headphones and viewing screens that fold out from the seatbacks. It's offered as part of the Rear Passenger Package that bundles the DVD system with tri-zone climate control, rear-seat audio controls and a separate rear forced-air vent.

GM SUV window switch recall urges owners to park vehicles outside

Thu, 07 Aug 2014

It's not unusual for there to be a lag between an automaker announcing a recall and the official documentation showing up on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. So it's no surprise that a recent GM campaign took about a month to appear in its official capacity. However, there appears to be some big differences between the two reports with potential safety implications.
In late June, GM announced that it needed to recall 181,984 examples of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x from the 2005-2007 model years, plus the 2006 Chevy Trailblazer EXT and 2006 GMC Envoy XL. The new documents paint a slightly different picture with 184,611 needing repaired and different model years listed.
The reason for the fix is still the same, though. It's possible for fluid to contact the master power window switch module in the driver's door, which can corrode the part. Eventually this could cause a short circuit, leaving the buttons inoperable and potentially leading to a fire. But the new NHTSA documents add an important note: "A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made."

Saab to reintroduce 9-3 SportCombi as Phoenix development continues

Sun, 27 Apr 2014

The saga of Saab goes to show that you can't keep a good automaker down. Founded back in 1947 (the same year, incidentally, as Ferrari, TVR and Maserati defector OSCA), Saab split off from its aerospace division, merged with Scania trucks, was subsequently picked up by General Motors, then pawned off onto Spyker before its current Chinese owners brought it back out of bankruptcy. Now under the auspices of National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), Saab has official restarted production of the 9-3 sedan, but what are its plans for the future?
In correspondence with Autoblog, NEVS communications director Mikael Ostlund gave us an idea of what to expect. First of all, NEVS is living up to its name by launching an electric version of the 9-3. As we reported a couple of weeks ago, the 9-3 EV currently is undergoing a pilot launch in the Chinese city of Qingdao (which owns part of NEVS) before being rolled out in other markets around the world. But that's not all NEVS has planned for Saab.
The reborn Swedish automaker also plans to relaunch the 9-3 SportCombi to supplement the 9-3 sedan. The wagon version was part of the second-gen 9-3's rollout in the early 2000s, offering increased cargo space and versatility - particularly vital since GM had seen it fit to replace the previous hatchback bodystyle favored by the brand faithful with a more traditional trunked form to lure new buyers into the fold. Although Ostlund confirmed that NEVS has "the option of adding the convertible" back into the lineup, nut has yet to decide on if and when it will do so.

GM denies Spyker claims in $3B Saab lawsuit

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Reuters reports General Motors has dismissed claims by Spyker outlined in a $3 billion lawsuit. Spyker alleged GM deliberately bankrupted Saab by preventing a deal with Chinese investor Zhejiang Youngman Lotus. GM, meanwhile, filed a response with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan saying that as the former owner of Saab, GM had the legal right to approve the deal with Youngman. But Spyker's lawsuit claimed GM's refusal to approve the deal with Youngman stemmed from the fact that the American automaker didn't want to create a competitor in China.
GM has said the issue stemmed more from the fact that it would stop licensing its technology to Saab or stop building vehicles for the manufacturer in the event it was bought by Youngman. Since Saab built its own platform that didn't use any GM tech, Spyker says that argument is meritless.
The lawsuit has Spyker seeking $3 billion in compensatory damages, though that number could swell with interest, punitive damages and legal fees, as well. Victor Muller, Spyker chief executive, has said the lawsuit is being funded by an anonymous third party. That party will share in any settlement. Youngman has refused to comment on whether or not it's footing the legal bill.
