Model Overview
Subaru's Tribeca comes in 2 models for 2009--a base model and luxurious Limited--and in a choice of 5- or 7-passenger seating. All Tribecas are powered by a 3.6L horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, which makes 256 horsepower and 247 ft-lb of torque. It's fitted for variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves, and there is a chain-drive valve system for easier servicing. Shifting is done by a 5-speed automatic transmission, which features a Sportshift manual gear selector. The Tribeca comes with Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution. The system normally sends 55 percent of power to the rear wheels but can vary the transfer through a hydraulic clutch pack. The vehicle dynamics control system aids the all-wheel-drive system and helps maintain stability. On either Tribeca model, the second-row seats have an adjustable reclining backrest and are split 40/20/40 and can fold forward for more cargo space or slide fore and aft up to eight inches. The third-row seat on 7-passenger models is split 50/50 and folds completely flat. Third-row seat access is now improved, with a tilt-slide feature for the second-row seat to allow easy access to the rearmost seats. Seven-passenger models, besides having their different seating arrangement, also get a rear cabin air conditioner and headliner-mounted rear-seat heater vents. The Tribeca's interior has a distinctive, sweeping design in front, with matte-metallic materials and a flowing "twin cockpit" instrument panel and large electroluminescent gauges. A 7-inch vehicle information display is also included. The Tribeca has a range of standard safety features including VDC stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, front-seat side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor.Standard features on the base Tribeca include power driver and front passenger seats with lumbar adjustment, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, steering-wheel audio controls, remote keyless entry and a 100-watt, 6-speaker CD sound system with MP3 compatibility. The Special Edition adds features such as a CD changer, 3-stage heated front seats and rear-cabin air conditioning and heating. Limited models add leather upholstery, ambient lighting, heated front seats, a power moonroof, roof rails, and a 160-watt sound system with subwoofer, headliner-mounted tweeters, and 6-disc changer.Major options include a DVD entertainment system with 9-inch widescreen display, a navigation system, and a remote engine starter.

US Army tests Subaru-powered hybrid truck

Sat, 04 Jan 2014

The military has been studying the implementation of alternative drivetrains for years, a tiny sampling of which includes the diesel-electric hybrid technical hauler and L-ATV from Oshkosh Defense and the Aggressor from Quantum Technologies. There was also ADA Technologies' work with ultracapitors, General Motors' focus on fuel cells and the roll out of electric motorcycles for Special Forces. In the Ultra Light Vehicle (ULV) prototype vehicle pictured above, we have the latest developments in the Department of Defense's hybrid interest combined with a need to develop a lightweight replacement for the AM General Humvee.
In 2010 the Office of the Secretary of Defense put the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in charge of developing a personnel carrier that could "balance payload, performance and protection," and do so without exorbitant cost. Armored Humvees can weigh more than seven tons, and while the ULV is just under 14,000 pounds, the new vehicle can do a lot more with its weight.
The Subaru turbodiesel under the hood puts out 175 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's not much for pulling 13,916 pounds, so it's assisted by two Remy 410HVH HT electric motors each capable of adding 268 continuous hp and 369 peak hp, along with 844 lb-ft of continuous torque or 1,221 ft-lbs at peak. They're only limited by the 14.2 kWh lithium-ion battery rated at 65 kW of continuous power and 180 kW of peak power, but still, TARDEC says the ULV can do 21 miles on electric power and on the flats has a combined range of 337 miles at 35 mph.

Subaru mulls motorsports return, nixes small CUV plans

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

The Subaru WRX STI breaking the automotive lap record at the Isle of Man might be just the beginning of the headlines trumpeting a Subaru racecar. According to the latest rumors, the Japanese brand is looking at taking motorsports more seriously in the future. That could possibly even mean endurance racing at Le Mans.
According to Auto Express, the brand is mulling a greater participation in motorsport, but the big question is where. The World Rally Championship isn't a certainty because it now favors smaller cars like the Volkswagen Polo. Subaru still competes in series like Rally America and Global Rallycross, but there are bigger stages to play on.
What's interesting, is that this commitment to motorsports comes right as the automaker is denying plans to build a small CUV for its passenger car lineup. According to Auto Express, the company has no intention of developing a crossover smaller than the current XV Crosstrek. Even if the sales are there, it would just cost too much to develop. In the US, at least, the XV is doing great with sales up 42 percent in July.

Buy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate you

Wed, 14 Nov 2012

Marketing can be a very strange business. Convincing a man or woman (or child, really) that they absolutely cannot live without the latest, greatest new bit of technology oftentimes takes a unique approach. In the "online film promoting the Toyota GT86" you'll see below, created by agency Happiness Brussels, men are reverse-psychologied into thinking a new sports coupe will make them more masculine by getting their loved ones to hate them. Or something like that. We think.
In any case, we suggest you watch the video below to see how much fun men can have with a GT86 - or Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ, presumably - at the expense of their significant others. Fair warning: There's a potential Not Safe For Work moment in the ad: beware of a brief male butt shot about 44 seconds in.
Marketing. Gotta love it. Unless you're married to a man. Or something like that. We think. Whatever, just watch.
