1968 Vw Bug - Classic "cal Style" Volkswagen on 2040-cars

Year:1968 Mileage:36636
Location:

Redondo Beach, California, United States

Redondo Beach, California, United States

'68 VW "Cal Style" bug  --  Please read full description:

Runs great! Rebuilt engine (36K ago), new clutch, lots of custom parts. Clean California car -- ready to restore, customize or just drive. Loss of job means no more fun projects for me.

Super reliable. Starts every time, runs strong! All lights, signals, horn and warning lights work fine. Window winders and seats will need to be replaced.

COOL STUFF:

Rebuilt engine (36K ago)

EMPI alloy wheels

Sport steering wheel

Performance exhaust (not too loud)

Short-throw shifter

Chrome air cleaner, oil filler cap, engine pulley and valve covers

Alpine Stereo and amp (needs wiring harness, available from Alpine)

NEW STUFF:

New clutch

New brakes and hoses

New camber compensator

New headliner

New sun visors

New trunk latch

New fuel line

New fuel level sender

New "Cal style" window moldings

New glove box latch

New-ish interior door panels

NEEDS:

Minor dent/rust removal (see photos)

Driver window crank mechanism (glass slips)

Front seats (new-ish covers but the actual seats and tracks are THRASHED!)

Keys for the door locks (ignition key is fine, it just doesn't work on the doors)

Heater exchangers and hoses (removed by previous owner)

FULL DISCLOSURE:

The car was in one accident that I know of, affecting the nose panel and hood (both replaced). The gas tank has a bend in it but does not leak – see photo.

The right front wheel rubs when turned to extreme right (steering needs a wheel stop tab).

Also, the rear wheels camber inward when driven in reverse, but go back to normal once you're underway.

Previous owner was an amateur do-it-yourselfer. Some of his "fixes" included:

Cheap toggle switch for the interior light)

Horn button on the dash, not the steering wheel

An "extra" starter button, even though the keyed ignition works fine.

Crummy Pep Boys carpet glued to wheel wells and cargo area

Flat black spray paint on dash and door trim

Turn signals removed from front fenders, replaced with newer-style bumper-mount signals

FYI:

Over the years the car has been three different colors:

Original color: VW Delta Green

Second color: Non-VW Metallic Blue

Current color: Non-VW off white-ish

This is a California car with clear title, ready to sign over to you.

I've made every effort to disclose every detail of this classic bug. This is a forty-something year old vehicle, so please set your expectations accordingly.

If you have ANY QUESTIONS, please ask first before bidding – all sales are final, as they say.

Local pick-up at my home in the Los Angeles area is preferred, or you can have the car shipped at your expense.

Thanks and happy bidding!

Paul

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.

Volkswagen Golf R Evo may debut at Beijing Motor Show

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

If a report in Auto Express is correct, a lighter, faster brother to the Volkswagen Golf R will be shown to the world at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Said to be called the Golf R Evo, the even harder hot hatch would be unveiled as one of those concepts that's practically a de facto presentation of the genuine thing. The Evo in its name will come from having a carbon fiber roof and CF in the bodywork, lighter wheels, thinner bucket seats up front and a roll cage instead of rear seats.
If there's a power increase, it's been described as "a small bump." However, as the report mentions, if the Jenny Craig regimen can drop 100 kilograms (220 pounds) from the the 3,247-pound weight of the European Golf R, then the Golf R Evo will do about the same damage on the scales as the Golf but have at least 50 more horsepower and 44 more pound-feet of torque.
Since we still don't have the current Golf, this isn't something that should keep you awake even if the 'concept' does become a production model. But it is good to know that the Golf R is really going to start pushing its boundaries.

Audi CVT suit settlement given green light, 64,000 cars covered

Mon, 07 Oct 2013

Audi drivers, listen up. If you bought or leased a 2002-06 model-year A4 or A6 with a factory-installed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that failed, you may be entitled to reimbursement under a recently settled class-action lawsuit with corporate parent Volkswagen.
According to Automotive News, the settlement covers about 64,000 vehicles and alleges that "manufacturing and design problems caused the transmissions to fail and left owners stuck with repair costs." While the suit also argues Audi was aware of these issues (going so far as to hide that knowledge from consumers), the settlement stops short of acknowledging any wrongdoing by the German automaker.
Audi drivers are eligible for a cash reimbursement if their CVT repairs occurred within 10 years or 100,000 miles of the date they bought or leased the vehicle before June 19, 2013. To be eligible for compensation, drivers must submit a claim form (found here) with supporting documents by November 18.
