Body:
Body is in fair condition.  There is rust through on the rocker panels, front outriggers and battery tray. The front nose of the bus has dents and surface rust.  Please see pictures.  there is various surface rust and misc dents that i tried to take pictures of to depict to show the worst parts and general condition of the bus.

The frame is very solid and structurally sound, as is the front floor, doglegs and cargo floor.

Cargo door opens and shuts fine.  the front doors open and shut solidly, but the handles need some lube as they are a little sticky to open.
there is an ignition key, but no door key, thus you cannot lock the vehicle

rear bumper is dented up.

Interior

The interior is mostly complete, only missing some bits of hardware and a cover on the jump seat storage.  There is linoleum under the ugly green carpet.  the pop top needs the rubber hold down latches as well as the canvas replaced. the child's cot is present and may need refurbished also.  The interior needs a good cleaning.  the seat upholstery is in good condition with little to no tears - the headliner panel is sagging some above the front seats.  the front seats are usable but dirty, worn and may have some tears. please see pictures

.

Drivetrain:

The Bus will need an entire mechanical go through to be reliable.  Meaning, it will need brakes replaced, fuel system flushed, engine and trans hoses, fluids changed, checked over and necessary parts replaced to function.  Its a Project thats been parked a few years.

the engine is a 1600 Dual port Beetle engine AE case.  engine turns over, but I havent tried to start it. Internal conditional of drivetrain is unknown.  The tires are dry rotted but do hold air and roll just fine.  It does steer fine

An inside look at VW's new California R&D center

Thu, 18 Oct 2012

Less than two months ago, the Volkswagen Group opened a new facility in Oxnard, California (about an hour's drive west of Los Angeles). The $27 million investment, touted as Test Center California (TCC), serves as a research and development lab testing emissions for all brands under Volkswagen's umbrella, including its newest member, Porsche. While still not fully operational, we toured the new 64,000-square-foot building last week and had a first-hand opportunity to see just how much work is involved testing engines and meeting increasingly stringent government emissions standards.
Replacing a similar facility established in 1990 in Westlake Village (about 20-minutes east of the new location), our guide explained how Oxnard was chosen for its temperate climate, varied regional terrain for test drives and low altitude. (The area is only a few feet above sea level - a critical parameter when instrument testing emissions.) The new facility is capable of analyzing hundreds of vehicles, prototypes and customer-owned vehicles, annually.
Most interesting to us was the huge stainless steel climate chamber, with a massive four-wheel dynamometer that allows VW to test running vehicles in both scorching desert and freezing climates without ever leaving the building (an Audi Q7 was running in place during our visit). We were also mesmerized by the countless storage tanks and intricate plumbing of chemicals, stored in both liquid and gas states, needed to perform the variety of tests. Lastly, we took a look at Bugatti's service center on the west coast, located completely within the new center. While there were no supercars on site, the facility is equipped with plenty of spare forged wheels (mounted with expensive Michelin PAX tires) and a Veyron-specific repair jig that allows the vehicle to be completely disassembled, if needed. It is a shame that the facility, which set off all of our automotive geek alerts, is closed to the public.

Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.

Volkswagen and Funny or Die take humorous spin in 2015 Golf

Wed, 10 Sep 2014

Volkswagen is partnering with Target and Funny or Die in a bizarre ad for the latest Golf starring comedian Rob Huebel, probably best known for his work on Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim.
The commercial is titled The Way Too Helpful Neighbor and stars Huebel as the eponymous neighbor. The challenge is for Huebel to help improve his buddy's apartment before the guy meets his girlfriend's parents for the first time. The obvious way to do that is to slide a new Golf through an actual Target in Texas, while simultaneously showcasing the store's goods and the car's features.
The commercial is airing online now and on TBS during breaks in Conan O'Brien's show, with sneak peaks during other programs on the network. Auto advertising is becoming pretty normal for Funny or Die at this point, though, with the site previously partnering with Fiat for several videos. Check out the ad above and see if you think it works. Scroll down for VW's announcement.
