UP for bid today is a heavy project volkswagen bus! Its one huge plus is that it comes with a lot of parts! Let me list them, TWO engines (apart) one is a 1600 dual port and the other is a 1700 dual carb (no carbs included). Both of the engines are NOT assembled. Most of the pieces are there. The 1600 did run before I took it apart. The rod bearings were showing copper and the crank looks like it needs to be reground. The heads for the 1600 are included and look OK. I can't see any cracks. I will include most of the fan shrouding for both engines plus a 1500 non doghouse shroud from another project. The 1700 was bought from another seller. It had been sitting for awhile and had gotten water into one cylinder. The engine would turn but would stop at one point. This was because the water in the one cylinder had corroded the aluminum of the head and wouldn't allow it to reach TDC. No carbs are included in this sale. The 1700 block, which btw is a type four engine, seems to be fine. Along with the crank. IT doesn't seem like the bottom end of the 1700 needed any machining work but that will be up to the buyer. The bus does have it's windshield. It is located in the back. You will also get two middle seats and the rear seat, two used but good head exchanges for a 1600 and other misc parts! The bus only has 21,000 miles on the transmission! Such a shame for all the body rot.. The rain gutters are probably going to be the hardest to replace. Along with the panel under the windsheild, the doglegs, parts of the floor are gone as well. There is plenty of rust! If you have any questions feel free to email me. The bus and parts are being sold AS A WHOLE LOT. I will not be splitting anything up! Bus needs to be gone by july first so if you have any trouble getting a trailer let me know, we might be able to work something out. Thanks!

Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.

Former Porsche boss Wiedeking won't face criminal charges over VW bid

Mon, 28 Apr 2014

Hedge fund managers have been suing Porsche for years now, alleging that the car company lied about its intentions during its failed attempt to take over Volkswagen, a gambit that caused them billion in losses. Over the same period, authorities in Stuttgart built a criminal case against former CEO Wendelin Wiedeking (above, left) and Chief Financial Officer Holger Härter (right), filing charges in December 2012. When those fund plaintiffs lost their most recent court case, one of the dimming lights in the dark and receding tunnel was that the criminal investigation might unearth more evidence about Porsche's actions that could help the plaintiffs in pending litigation.
Bloomberg reports that another light has gone out, though, with a Stuttgart court dismissing the market manipulation case before going to trial because, as a court spokesperson said, "there wasn't enough evidence backing up the charges." When prosecutors get the files back from the court, they have a week to decide to refile, but unless they've been sandbagging evidence that could bolster the case, the only lights at the end of the tunnel will be those welcoming Wiedeking and Härter back to the world of legally unencumbered men.

Last VW bus ever made arrives at final destination

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

A Brazilian politician tried to save it, unsuccessfully, so the final Last Edition Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi was produced on December 20, 2013 and now resides in a vintage museum at Volkswagen's Commercial Vehicles HQ in Hanover, Germany.
The Volkswagen Microbus was built for 56 years, starting in September 1957. Brazil was the last country still assembling it, but new safety regulations in the country requiring airbags and ABS on all cars spelled the end. When that politician introduced a bill that would pardon only the 'Bus from a death sentence, it couldn't garner the required number of votes for passage. The South American country takes the Kombi production title, though, with 1.5 million of the 3.5 million total made in the home of Copacabana beach and the girl from Ipanema.
The VW Bus is dead. Now perhaps we can turn our attentions to the still-not-totally-settled matter of the Bulli...
