1976 Volkswagen Bus - Transporter - Type 2 - Microbus - Minibus - Hippie Bus - VW Van
Name: Colonel Mustard
Seven Passenger
4 Cylinder 2.0L Air Cooled Engine
4 Speed Manual Transmission
The odometer is only 5 digits and reads 89,700 but based on information from the previous owner I believe the mileage to be 189,700.
I have owned Colonel Mustard for 6 years and prior to that there were two previous owners. The man that I bought him from owned him for about 20 years. This bus has been lovingly cared for by all of it's owners. It runs great and always starts right up. Once you learn how to drive it, it has amazing pickup for a 4 cylinder and is very easy to maneuver. Most of the equipment is original. The engine was rebuilt by the previous owner and has never given me a single problem. During my ownership I replaced a lot of things that suffered from dry rot such as the brake lines, axle boots and fuel lines. I put brand new tires on the rear last week and the front ones have lots of tread. I wanted to make sure it was safe to drive since my teenage daughter often takes her friends to the beach in it (don't tell her I'm selling it).
One very unique feature is a WORKING A/C which is very rare. Very few of the buses had A/C installed. This one works and is great for the summer down here. It's an old car so you do have to recharge it a couple of times each year.
It has been a second car for me but is totally reliable as a daily driver. I often drive it to work and love to drive it on weekends especially to the beach. If your a surfer or a stand-up-paddleboarder you will be able to easily store boards inside (although a rack on top would look really cool). I carried two SUP's - one 12' and one 11' many times inside with just a little sticking out the back hatch. The middle seat can be removed to open up the center of the van for carrying lots of cargo.
Everywhere you go in this bus people smile, wave and shoot peace signs. I didn't buy it for attention but I have to admit it's a lot of fun to go out in and have people walk over and ask about it or tell stories about the one that they owned in the "old days".
The bus is ready to drive and very safe and reliable. Since it is 37 years old there are definitely a few things that don't work or need a little repair to work but most of these things I just got used to since they were not crucial. I'll be glad to take you for a tour and point anything out that does not work perfectly.
My original plan was to keep this for just a year or so to have the experience of owning a VW Bus. It has taken me 5 years to get around to selling it because it holds a special place in my heart. I've been desiring a little convertible roadster as my new second car so now it's time for Colonel Mustard to bring happiness to a new owner.

VW outsells GM in China for first time in 8 years
Fri, 26 Oct 2012In case you didn't know, Volkswagen is hell-bent on becoming the largest automaker in the world. The German carmaker has inched closer to that goal, having outsold General Motors in China last quarter for the first time in eight years.
Volkswagen's sales in China, its largest marker, increased by 21 percent last quarter to 704,991 units. Those numbers almost tripled GM's third-quarter growth, and were enough to beat out the American automaker's 664,765 sales. GM, however, still leads in year-to-date sales in China by a slim margin of around 77,000 units. The Asian nation also happens to be GM's largest market, and according to the report in Automotive News, China's car market may grow to be larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined in three years' time.
About the news his company was bested in China by VW last quarter, GM CEO Dan Akerson is quoted saying, "It's not whether you're the biggest car manufacturer. It's whether you want to be the most profitable." It should be noted of these figures that GM includes truck figures, yet excludes Hong Kong and Macau from its Chinese sales numbers, while VW does just the opposite. Through September of this year, Volkswagen had 5 of the 10 best selling vehicles in China. GM boasted three of the cars on that list.
Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
Next-gen Volkswagen Golf R spied while running the 'Ring
Tue, 16 Apr 2013The launch of a new Volkswagen Golf is never a small thing, and things are already looking up for the subcompact hatchback after it was named 2013 World Car of the Year. While we've already seen the base and GTI versions of the next-generation Golf, now we're getting our first look at the sportier Golf R.
Although this prototype wears GTI lettering on the front fenders, it's more than just the roll cage and Sparco racing seat hinting that this is something a little more serious. Unlike the Golf and GTI, this car shows that the Golf R will continue to flaunt massive air intakes on each side of the fascia, and the rear of the car (though it's hard to see) has quadruple exhaust outlets. We still don't have an official word on power, but rumors indicate that the next Golf R could be pushing close to 300 horsepower, making it the most powerful production Golf ever. As much fun as we had during our first drive of the Golf R Cabriolet in the cold, snowy French Riviera last month, more power is a warming idea.
