Rebuilt Eng/clutch/brakes, Southern Cal No Rust, Very Well Kept Family Surf Bus on 2040-cars

Aliso Viejo, California, United States

I am the second owner, very well kept VW Vanagon GL with clean straight body, no rust, good clean interior, and seats/headliner/carpet are in good condition.  This Vanagon has the much more reliable and better touring water boxer engine, a 1.9L professionally rebuilt with all the better 2.1L upgrades.  New engine has about 200 miles on it, runs and drives excellent, purrs down the road, fast and powerful even on long hills in this area. Stays cool even in bad freeway bumper to bumper traffic.  Rebuild and restoration details below.  Has been in Southern California its entire life (no snow, almost no rain). We will miss this Vanagon, recent job loss forces sale, unfortunately after we began restoration.

Recently rebuilt engine, new clutch, new radiator, new power steering pump, new pwr steering rack, brakes, and front window (old one had crack).  Work was done by reputable shop in southern California, and engine has 12 month warranty through 10/2014.  Paint looks good but very close up you can see age in some places, has a few scratches here and there, is not perfect, but when waxed looks good.  Surf rack is included, as well as a very nice A&E awning (Trans awn 2000) with good screens.

Engine: 1.9L Rebuilt by JCS Volks in Los Angeles, a quality rebuilder of VW engines. I had the 2.1L upgrades installed as recommended by leading VW shops, as well as GoWesty.com.  My vanagon is much faster now and purrs, faster than standard 1.9L's now, mainly because the 2.1L crankshaft was used which increases horsepower.
I cannot place the link on this page per ebay but see the gowesty website and search for article named "Engine Block Story: 1.9 vs. 2.1 Waterboxer Designs".  Has about 200 miles on rebuilt engine, warranty good until 10/2014, will need a 300 mile oil change and because engine is new the mechanic should check the valve adjustment per rebuilder instructions.  After that it should be good to go another 170,000 miles.

Interior: Very well kept and in good condition.  Front and rear seats all solid and look nice, no tears, and sit well, all seat belts there and in good condition.  Rear seat has a few light stains in back corner, not very noticeable.  Rear seat folds into double/full bed, rear cushion in great condition.  Privacy curtains all around except back window (does have curtain bar though, just needs new curtains on back window).  The instrument dash lights went out recently, havent looked but likely a bulb, will fix it before sale.  Also the odometer stopped working shortly after the rebuild, likely needs a new cable.  The interior door lights and slider lights work well.  Headliner is in good condition,  just installed new rear hatch struts, hatch opens, stays up and closes perfectly.

A/C: Was upgraded with overhead AC/fan system when Vanagon was new at dealer.  All works well, controls and air all good, however I had the A/C compressor removed when engine rebuilt.  If I had known i was selling it I would have kept it in tact.  A/C compressor works and the lines are ready in engine bay, just needs to be installed.  Sale includes the compressor and the bracket if new owner wants to enable A/C.  After installed it will need to have lines cleared and system recharged, which usually runs under $100.

Stereo: Has a stereo/CD however I have lost the face plate so it cannot be operated.  The new owner could install new stereo or find a faceplate that fits the current system.  Has stock speakers in door and in back.

Recent work/ New parts Installed by VW shop:
- engine, clutch, radiator, pwr steering pump and steering rack
- GoWesty rear hatch struts
- brakes were bled and cleaned, shop installed new front pads and turned rotors.

Included with Vanagon:
- receipts for all work
- Vanagon orig. owners guide
- surf racks
- AC Compressor and bracket
- Very nice A&E Trans Awn 2000 awning with room screens, fits on well with surf rack removed.

Please don't hesitate to email any questions or call.  If you leave a message I will return your call usually in evening, around 6PM PST.

Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.

Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg take the R-Line

Mon, 14 Jan 2013

Volkswagen's Detroit Auto Show presence is big on utility this year, with the CrossBlue three-row concept vehicle occupying the lion's share of the limelight, both literally and figuratively. But that isn't stopping Volkswagen from lavishing attention on its already established crossover and sport utility vehicles with new R-Line derivatives. The Tiguan and its big brother Touareg are getting a host of look-faster items to increase their sporting appeal.
On the outside, the Tiguan R-Line receives handsome 19-inch alloys peering out from beneath fender extensions, premium lighting (bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps), along with matching side skirts and a liftgate spoiler. On the inside, sportier accommodations include aluminum trim and a flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters. As with other R-Line models, there are no powertrain modifications to go with the more aggressive visuals (that being the province of R standalone performance models like the R32), though the suspension has been firmed up an unspecified amount. The Tiguan R-Line will be available in front- or all-wheel drive configuration.

Volkswagen reveals Beetle GSR, R-Line convertible and two special GTIs

Thu, 07 Feb 2013

Volkswagen has chosen to really expand its performance-tuned portfolio at this year's Chicago Auto Show, bringing along a couple of new Beetles destined for model year 2014, as well as a pair of freshened GTI packages that you'll be able to buy almost right away.
The first, and splashiest of the Chicago goodies on the VW stand has got to be the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR. Don't lose your temper, Acura Integra geeks; in this case, GSR stands for "Gelb Schwarzer Renner" or "Yellow Black Racer," and harkens back to a sport-tuned classic Beetle from the 1970s. For the 2014 iteration, the GSR gets a 210-horsepower version of VW's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. That engine is enough to push the Beetle to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds, and up to a top speed of 130 mph.
Of course, you'll have long-since noticed the shockingly yellow-and-black livery before you stumble across the Turbo badge on the rear deck. The GSR gets 19-inch alloy wheels, 235-section tires and a tea-tray rear spoiler, but it's the paint and graphics package that will decide if this is your (lemony) cup of tea. Things don't get any subtler inside the car, either, as VW has carried the colorway through to the interior, as well. Only 3,500 Beetle GSRs will be produced, with just more than half of those going to the US - call your dealer today, Wiz Khalifa.
