This head-turner VW Camper Bus named Charlie has been entirely restored to premium status as dependable daily driver is perfect for beach outings, camping trips, or just going out for ice cream or to the drive-in.  Charlie gets more positive attention than new convertible sports cars- "Dude, that's so sweet!" - and he never disappoints in performance or esthetics.  Charlie was completely restored with the following:

Mechanical- Rebuilt 1600 engine with only 24,000 miles on this engine - can easily drive 75 mph on interstate highways without even a burp.  Extremely dependable!
new carburetor
new electrical wires
new belts and hoses
new brakes
new shocks
new steering and shifting linkage - very smooth
new dual batteries with charging transducer to home wall power

Exterior- Stripped and repainted with original VW antique white (actually tan) paint color- dry San Diego weather has been kind to Charlie with very few small rust spots !
new vinyl camper tent with 3 windows
new tires
new turn signals

Interior- THE best looking beach/camper ever!
1. New upholstery for all seats, sleeper cushion, and spare tires cover
2. Sand and dirt friendly wood patterned and textured vinyl flooring (easy to sweep out)
3. CD player with removable faceplate and 6x9 speakers rock the party out
4. Rear seat folds down easily with ratchet action into double bed
5. New vinyl camper top with 3 zipper windows pops up with mounted folding cot for additional 2nd floor sleeping (fun!)
6. Seating with seat belts for 8 passengers (only 2 belts in the original!)
7. Ceramic glass tile center and side tables with color coordinated wooden and rope trim
8. New glove box and locking padded center console with 2 expanding cup holders and mounted 110 volt power station to rear batteries
9. Loads of storage under side table and all underneath all seats
10. Best of all - the insulated and bacteria/mold resistant palapas thatch headliner and interior walls

Limitations- Very few for a 43 year-old vehicle - why Charlie is so awesome!
Needs new door and window seals yet no leaks - dry and mild SoCal sun still does a number on 43 year-old rubber
Doesn't accelerate or corner like Lighting McQueen. Charlie sounds and drives more like Fillmore - imagine that...he's a VW camper!

Volkswagen unveils sportier Passat Performance Concept ahead of Detroit debut

Fri, 11 Jan 2013

Ahead of its official unveiling at next week's Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen has released some preliminary details and images of its Passat Performance Concept - a car that, as its name suggests, adds a little more spice to the automaker's midsize sedan formula. VW makes no mention of any production intent for this road-ready-looking sedan, simply stating that the Performance Concept is a way to "explore this practical four-door's sportier side."
It certainly doesn't look too sporty, the only visual upgrades being larger 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust, bi-xenon headlamps with VW's Advanced Front Lighting system, LED taillmaps and carbon-look mirror caps. Inside, there are carbon interior accents and two-tone leather upholstery. But no matter, the real upgrades for this mightier Passat are found below the sheetmetal.
Powering the Performance Concept is a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower and sending its grunt to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. For reference, that's 80 more horsepower than the Passat's base 2.5-liter inline-five, but 20 horsepower less than the potent 3.6-liter VR6. As for other performance upgrades, Volkswagen has fitted the car with a lowered sport suspension and revamped electronic steering, which should indeed add a bit more dynamic feedback to the already nice-driving sedan.

US-spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI to finally debut in New York

Tue, 12 Mar 2013

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is hardly new to us. In fact, we've already driven it. And elsewhere in the world, the new Golf is already winning awards. Even so, we still have yet to see the US-spec version of the car, though that won't be the case much longer. As part of the New York Auto Show festivities later this month, Volkswagen will finally show off the 2015 Golf models destined for our shores.
Three different versions of the Golf will debut under the lights of New York City's Javits Center: the turbocharged TSI, oil-sipping TDI and hotter GTI. The first model in that list uses Volkswagen's new 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, replacing the outgoing 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline five-cylinder. The latter two models use familiar engines: the 2.0-liter TDI diesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, respectively.
Even though the new Golf officially debuts later this month, it won't go on sale in the US until the first quarter of 2014. We'll be waiting patiently.

Skoda racing Up! to Worthersee with Citigo Rally concept

Thu, 17 May 2012

If you thought the Volkswagen Group was about to wind down the endless stream of concept cars based on the new Up! city car, think again. Because not only is the Volkswagen brand itself keeping the train a-moving, so are its sister brands.
Skoda has its own version of the Up called the Citigo. But what racing fans know the Czech subsidiary for best is its rally program that has become a dominant force in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the basis for VW's own foray into the World Rally Championship. Now Skoda is bringing the two together with an exciting concept car previewed by the rendering above and confirmed in the press release below.
Following in the footsteps of the tantalizing Fabia roadster unveiled last year, the Citigo Rally concept is to be the centerpiece of the Skoda display at the Volkswagen Group's annual hot-hatch gathering at Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Details are scarce, but the show car will feature rally-inspired bodywork complete with 18-inch white alloys packed into aggressively flared wheel arches, a substantial rear wing and vents aplenty.
