I am selling my 1982 VW Jetta that has a 1986 1.6L NA diesel motor and 5 speed manual transmission. I bought this car a few years back and never got it fully running. When I bought it the head was off because of a blown head gasket. Long story short, I ended up replacing it with a new remanufactured OEM German made head and head gasket. Now, it appears that it needs a new injection pump. It will run, but the engine races and should not be driven. I bought the car for a few reasons. First, these cars are known for getting excellent mileage, my 1990 Jetta, which has the same motor, gets around 40 mpg and some get even higher. The 1982 body style is lighter and a bit smaller than the 1990, so it stands to reason this car should do well. Second, the car has many new/like new parts. The alternator, water pump, injectors, glow plugs, glow plug relays, radiator, various coolant hoses, front and rear brakes and tires have all been replaced in the past few years. When the head was put on it also got a new timing belt and timing belt tensioner. The motor was rebuilt around 2009 and has around 30,000 miles on it. The clutch was replaced at time of rebuilt. The clutch and trans feel good, better than my 1990. Third, the body, while not perfect is in decent shape for its age. The car has no major dents or dings, and is nice and true,  however, there is some surface rust, but no major rust issues under the body. The sunroof opens and closes nicely and seals well. The drivers side window has fallen into the door panel but is not broken, the glass clips are known for going bad. The other windows are fine, and seal well. The seats are in good shape except for the drivers, which is torn up. The car is not the best looking thing out there, but with a little bit of work, it could be a pretty good car. I have tried to describe it as best as I can, but please ask any questions that you may have. The car is sold as-is, buyer is responsible for shipping. At buyers request, I could deliver the car up to 250 miles for $1.00 per loaded mile. Thanks for looking!

Honda wins Commercial of the Decade, but not for the ad you think [w/VIDEO]

Honda's Commercial of the Decade: "Grrr" - Click above to watch video
The mad men at Adweek recently voted for the Commercial of the Decade (Super Bowl commercials not included) and Honda took top honors over memorable ads from the last ten years by companies like Nike, Budweiser and Sony. That's not a big surprise considering Honda often puts a huge amount of effort into its on-air spots. However, the Japanese automaker didn't win for the commercial you might have expected: "Cog." Though Honda's famous commercial that breaks down a European Accord Tourer into a Rube Goldberg-esque machine was also a finalist, it was beaten by another Honda commercial called "Grrr" that's narrated by Garrison Keillor of all people. You've probably never seen it, but you can after the jump.
Volkswagen also made the list of finalists, but the particular ad chosen out of all the comical VW ads we've seen was unexpected as well. Most surprising carmaker with a commercial in the finals: Saturn. Who knew...

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Mon, 05 Mar 2012

The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
