1984 Volkswagen Diesel Jetta. 5spd, runs great! steadily gets 50mpg. Just took it on a 500 mile trip with no issues whatsoever. No leaks that I am aware of. Regularly replaced the oil. Previous owner gave me a huge folder full of receipts most of which is listed below.

Heres a list of whats been done to it, in no particular order:
1998:
alternator
2000:
new fan switch and thermostat
2001:
Front wheel bearing
front left inner and outer tie rods
new ball joint
new clutch
refaced flywheel
new left front axle shaft
2002:
new alternator regulator
new brake hose and lines
2003:
Replaced left outer tie rod
replaced water pump
replaced left rear ebrake cable
new block heater
2005:
New exhaust
2006:
New radiator
new brake hardware
new rear brake shoes, wheel cylinders,
replaced rear shocks and springs
replaced valve cover gasket
new fuel filter
2007:
New front struts
new spring perch
new alternator
2009:
Cv joint half-shaft
headpipe
Recently got a new battery. I just replaced drivers side mirror, new front speakers. The interior is a 9 out of 10, missing passenger reclining knob, and small stain on drivers seat. speedometer is off by about 10mph, but have the correct gear to go in the tranny but have not installed it yet. Last owner said will probably need a new wheel bearing soon. Decent amount of surface but no rot really except for on the a-pillars(pictured), but I think that a skilled welder could patch it fairly easily.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Volkswagen throws a Polo-palooza with four new or upgraded models

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Volkswagen unveiled a parade of new and upgraded Polo models at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, including the Polo TSI BlueMotion, Polo TDI BlueMotion, Polo BlueGT and CrossPolo (pictured above). While they will likely never make an appearance this side of the pond, it is fun to see what European subcompact drivers will be driving later this year.
The new BlueMotion models represent the most efficient petrol and diesel options in their class, according to VW. The BlueMotion TDI offers just 73 horsepower from its diesel engine but gives the equivalent of 76 miles per gallon (US) in the EU test. The BlueMotion TSI brings a little more power with its 88-hp petrol engine and has a combined rating of 57 mpg (US) in the EU cycle.
The Polo BlueGT provides a balance of performance and economy, and for the 2014 model, it gains a 9-horsepower boost to its 1.4-liter turbocharged to give drivers 147 hp at the press of the accelerator. This year's car also has an optional Sport Select suspension with electronically controlled dampers to improve handling a bit. It's still fitted with active cylinder management to use as little gas as possible when cruising.

The 911 Of Hot Hatches Takes The Compact Game To New Levels
North American car buyers get a bit of a slap in the face when it comes to delivery schedules for new the Volkswagen Golf and pumped-up GTI models. We'll just repeat the old chestnut: It's worth the wait... even though it still stinks. This time around, Western Europe is taking deliveries of the new Golf as we speak, and GTI deliveries start between May and July. North America doesn't get the Mk7 Golf or GTI until about July of 2014.
So we approached our first drive of the new GTI with this chip on our shoulder: "You're making us wait? Well, then at least give us the exact car we'll be able to buy. No compromises, mein freund." And so it was that we extracted nearly all of our drive impressions from behind the wheel of what, for the United States, will technically be a model year 2015 two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance with the standard six-speed manual.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.
