Outstanding 1982 2-dr VW Rabbit.   115,500 miles.   Desert Tan, with tan leatherette seats, door-panels.   Tan carpet.

One of the very rarest original Diesels with an automatic-transmission.

Fuel-mileage will vary; but, I have obtained in the upper-40s MPG ... and, into the low 50s MPG (babying it).    Now, with an updated tuning for more acceleration and speed, I get in the upper-30s.   Why?  I just can't seem to drive this little baby SLOWLY.   It just 'begs' to be driven fast.  And, it does.   I got the first speeding-ticket (dreaded radar) in over 25-yrs with this car ... and, have owned a couple Porsche 911s during this time-period.   This thing really goes like STINK !  (Hence; the "GTI" analogy in the listing title).   Don't let that auto-trans fool you.  Even the cop that wrote me was incredulous.

It has a performance-type exhaust-system.   Delivers a raucous, sweet exhaust note.  Have had boy racer-types pull up alongside me at traffic lights, asking What-the-heck is in (under the hood) that thing ?  Ha!  I think the guy that tuned it, also altered the tranny shift-points.  Can be driven aggressively with no pre-mature upshifts, as long as the accelerator is down.  Like, WOW !   This little car is sooooo much fun to drive.  Plus -- it looks like the original Mk-I GTI.  (*note: has the cool, desirable, removable head-rests, early dashboard configuration).

Upgrade to later-model Jetta 14" alloy-wheels, with Hancook 195/60 R14 tires (less than 5k miles use).  Recent oil (Shell Rotella) and filter (Mann).  New fan-belt and adjustment.  Wipers.

Previous owner spent about $5k on it.   Have receipts.   Like him, I am losing my storage.   Hate to see this car not garage-kept.

Here is what is not perfect:
  * headliner starting to sag in rear
  * passenger-side sun-visor a little 'dog-eared'
  * upholstery fading
  * some stains on carpet (can be removed?)
  * trans/shifter detent indicator trim-panel has small hole
  * heater control-cable is stiff (heater works great) in operation
  * no A/C  [*sigh*]
  * window lift-mechanisms (mechanical; not powered) balky ...
  * a few (very few) 'dings', scratches
  * needs exhaust-pipe hanger re-attached (one of those rubber dogbone-shaped things, I think ... I may be able to fix this if I can get it on a lift).

Car has passed both Maryland and Delaware inspection recently.

Also; the starter may need replacing.  Why do I think so? Last Summer, after a 2-hr drive in D.C. traffic on a 95°F day, the car would not restart.  Thinking (correctly?) I figured it (the starter) was suffering some kind of heat-stroke, and would operate properly upon a cool-down.  It did.  Started perfectly about 1/2-hr later.  This happened again, a few weeks later; similar circumstances.   As most of my driving is local (10-30 minutes), I have not had this happen since.  Two experienced VW mechanics I spoke with, concurred with my diagnosis.  Recommend starter replacement.   A new BOSCH starter with lifetime-warrentee is about $125 (with core-exchange).   You just gotta know that Murphy's Law is gonna kick in, just when you least want it.

I shot the pics for this listing on a Spring day here on the Del-Mar-Va Peninsula when pollen and oak tree spores were wreaking havoc.   I hosed down, and wiped the car dry to take these pics, quickly.   Car has not been 'detailed'.  Brake-dust still present on the alloy wheels.  Picture of engine-bay shows original stickers still on inner-fender panels.  Original undercoat and Waxoyl still present around fasteners.

Car is located in Maryland near Patuxent Naval Air Station, a little more than an hour's drive from Washington, D.C. ... about 2-hrs from Richmond or Baltimore ... 1 1/2-hrs drive from Annapolis.  $500 deposit within 48-hrs of auction close.  Balance due within 7 days.

UK auto magazine says this is the best car commercial of all time [w/videos]

Thu, 20 Dec 2012

There have been many great car commercials over the years, but is it possible to define the best? Well, Ad Week recently took a crack at it by rating the top commercials of the year by looking at their view counts on YouTube, but Auto Express took a more democratic approach by putting the decision to a vote. Just after Thanksgiving, Auto Express came up with a list of the 20 popular commercials, and it tasked its readers with choosing the winner for the best car ad of all time. The winner? Honda's 2003 commercial for its then-new European Accord titled "The Cog."
While the ad never aired in the US, most car people have surely seen the impressive Rube Goldberg-style spot. In fact, the only commercial on this list that we saw on US television was the Volkswagen ad "The Force," but many of the others have become viral videos, including transforming and dancing Citroën C4. Of the 19 other commercials that vied for the title of best ad of all time, only the Ford Puma "Steve McQueen" commercial gave Honda a run for its advertising money.
Scroll down to watch Auto Express' top five commercial in order and to check out a press release, then let us know some of your favorite car commercials in Comments.

VW Jetta TDI Value Edition drops price of diesel ownership to $21,295*

Wed, 08 Jan 2014

Getting a new diesel-powered car just got a bit easier. Volkswagen has announced a new Jetta TDI Value Edition for 2014 that trims over $2,000 off the starting price of a Jetta TDI, making the most affordable diesel-powered car in America even more so. Prices start at $21,295 (*plus $820 for destination) for a Value Edition with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed dual-clutch automatic adds $1,100 to the price. For that money, owners will get 140 horsepower, 236 pound-feet of torque and 42 miles per gallon on the freeway.
Despite the lower price and being down on content versus the previous base Jetta TDI, the Value Edition does come quite well equipped, with standard heated cloth seats, a six-speaker stereo with a Media Device Interface, satellite radio, and one-touch, up-down power windows on all four doors. Customers will be giving up some notable stuff though, including tilt/telescopic steering, Bluetooth streaming audio, power seats and a multi-function steering wheel.
Still, if you're aching to get your hands on a new TDI, this is now the most affordable way to do it. We suspect having the lower MSRP will help the German manufacturer make even further diesel-powered inroads here in the States, a land where they cleared their decks of over 100,000 TDI models in 2013.

Skoda Octavia vRS is just the thing for your pumped-up neighborhood

Fri, 26 Jul 2013

Skoda, oh Skoda. You're just so cool. Maybe it's the fact that it's a brand that we don't get in these United States, but Skoda's rebadged Volkswagens, in particular the new Octavia vRS shown here, are just different enough from the hum-drum VWs on our shores that the Czech brand seems strangely desirable. Maybe we're just craving forbidden fruit.
This short, minute-long spot covers the new vRS in a world of excess, where strollers ride on 26-inch wheels, lawnmowers feature V8 engines and ice cream cones are the size of toddlers. As things often go in these ads, the Octavia vRS draws the eyes of passerby that are seemingly use to things far more ridiculous than a reasonably priced Czech sedan. In reality, the Octavia should be fairly familiar to American buyers. It uses the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-pot found in the Volkswagen GTI and Jetta GLI, with 217 horsepower, and sits on the same platform as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. Take a look at the full spot, below.
