Year:1984 Mileage:225

Front Royal, Virginia, United States

I have owned this car since 2005 and used it daily to drive to work from that time until last year.  Last year I decided to rebuild the engine since it was getting a little hard to start and using more oil.  I got another car during my rebuild and just never went back to driving the rabbit like I was.  I drove it about 500 miles since the rebuild then parked it in the garage where it has sat since last April until driven today 3/9 and works perfectly.  Odometer shows 225k.  It stopped recording every mile a few years ago.  The speedo works and odometer records sometimes and then doesn't sometimes.  Mileage doesn't matter as nearly every rotating part on the car has been replaced.

New parts include... rod bearings, main bearings, piston rings, timing belt, injector pump seal kit, camshaft seals, oil pan gasket, head gasket and bolts, all new hoses, heater core, starter, thermostat, water pump, glow plugs, shifter bushings, windshield, front rotors, calipers and pads, rear brakes, front wheel bearings, CV axles and transmission seals, full exhaust front to rear, Brand new tires all the way around with the VW GT aluminum rims.  Has 100psi cold oil pressure, runs about 60psi warmed up at highway speed.  I set the injector pump timing toward maximum safe advance.  It's getting 51 mpg highway which is about two or three more than before the rebuild.  It also starts excellently even in cold weather.  Drives super smooth.  Has a nice radio and speakers.

I have the passenger side and back seats.  I was running without them as why carry the weight if I was the only one ever in there.

Car has a four speed manual trans that works great.  With the deal I have a five speed trans I will throw in if you want it.  Wouldn't make any difference for highway driving, high is the same ratio but some people want a five speed.

Car has some rust coming.  Original paint, See the pictures.  Most of it is surface that could be sanded off.  The car needs paint.  I would suggest sanding and a rustoleum paint job, would be very cheap and preserve the car.  The floors and underneath are solid.

Call me if you want to.  540-660-1209

Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon caught completely uncovered

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Without a lot of information to go with them, our camera-toting spies have captured some new images of a Volkswagen Golf wagon variant that is almost completely undisguised. In fact, the one piece of camouflage on the tidy wagon would probably have gone unnoticed to most casual viewers. Look closely at the rear three-quarter view of the car and you'll notice that the apparent taillight clusters are actually fakes - the outline of the real units is faintly visible behind the blue bodywork and the sticker-like fake taillights.
It's a good guess then, that this Golf wagon (called a Golf Kombi by our spy photographer) is a prototype that's pretty far along in the development cycle for Volkswagen. We can't be sure what impact this will have on the company's small wagon offering here in the US, but we'd be pretty surprised if something very like this didn't end up as the next Jetta SportWagen. We might well have more information on that front, after we visit Geneva next week.

An inside look at VW's new California R&D center

Thu, 18 Oct 2012

Less than two months ago, the Volkswagen Group opened a new facility in Oxnard, California (about an hour's drive west of Los Angeles). The $27 million investment, touted as Test Center California (TCC), serves as a research and development lab testing emissions for all brands under Volkswagen's umbrella, including its newest member, Porsche. While still not fully operational, we toured the new 64,000-square-foot building last week and had a first-hand opportunity to see just how much work is involved testing engines and meeting increasingly stringent government emissions standards.
Replacing a similar facility established in 1990 in Westlake Village (about 20-minutes east of the new location), our guide explained how Oxnard was chosen for its temperate climate, varied regional terrain for test drives and low altitude. (The area is only a few feet above sea level - a critical parameter when instrument testing emissions.) The new facility is capable of analyzing hundreds of vehicles, prototypes and customer-owned vehicles, annually.
Most interesting to us was the huge stainless steel climate chamber, with a massive four-wheel dynamometer that allows VW to test running vehicles in both scorching desert and freezing climates without ever leaving the building (an Audi Q7 was running in place during our visit). We were also mesmerized by the countless storage tanks and intricate plumbing of chemicals, stored in both liquid and gas states, needed to perform the variety of tests. Lastly, we took a look at Bugatti's service center on the west coast, located completely within the new center. While there were no supercars on site, the facility is equipped with plenty of spare forged wheels (mounted with expensive Michelin PAX tires) and a Veyron-specific repair jig that allows the vehicle to be completely disassembled, if needed. It is a shame that the facility, which set off all of our automotive geek alerts, is closed to the public.
