1973 VW Fastback with Full Auto Transmission / Less than 54,000 Orig. Miles / Nearly all Stock & Original / Accident & Rust-Free California Car / 2nd Owner / Professionally Maintained

This ’73 VW Fastback is in incredible condition, nearly all stock and original.  Originally purchased from the VW dealer in Santa Maria, California, the first owner took excellent care of the car clocking just over 51,000 miles until 2006 when the car was put in storage.  When she died in 2013 it was purchased from her estate by the same VW-trained master mechanic who had maintained it at his shop since 1975.  Since buying it the mechanic has driven it about 200 miles.  After 47 years in the business, the mechanic is retiring and selling off his inventory.

After buying the car, the mechanic did the following maintenance work:

New battery
All new fuel hoses
New Bosch fuel pump
4 new tires
Replaced all fluids
New brakes, front & rear
Full engine tune-up
New gas shocks

This car is accident-free and has always been garaged.  It starts, runs and drives like new.  The fuel-injected engine is all stock and idles smoothly.  The fully automatic transmission works perfectly.  The paint, upholstery, glass, door cards, carpet, headliner and trunk liners are all original and in like new condition.  The car has never been smoked in.  There is no rust anywhere.  The pan is solid all around.  Gauges and lights work as they should except for the clock which stopped working at 9:22. There is a small dash crack by the speaker grill.  It comes with the original blue California license plates, the original dealer license plate frames, original jack and tool kit, and the original owner’s manual .  This car needs nothing but a new owner.

The car is located in Santa Maria, CA where it’s been all it life, and can be viewed there by prior arrangement with the seller.  The title is clear but the DMV registration is not current and back fees may be due.  It’s smog-exempt in California.

This car is in excellent condition.  I’ve attempted to give a complete and accurate description but it’s possible I’ve overlooked something.  So please ask any questions you may have.  However, please note that this car will be sold as is, with no warranty against unknown conditions or conditions that may develop after the sale.

This car is being offered with no reserve and will go to the highest bidder upon full payment.  A deposit of 10% of the sale amount is due within 24 hours of close of auction and can be made via paypal or cash.  Balance is due within 7 days of close of auction and must be made in cash or by certified bank check.  If paying by bank check, the car won’t be released until the check has cleared the bank.

Buyer is responsible for all pick up or shipping arrangements and costs.  The seller is willing to store the car for a reasonable amount of time to allow the buyer to arrange pickup or shipping.  Buyer must contact the seller to make storage arrangements as needed.

Thanks for watching and happy bidding.

Volkswagen shows off performance-ish Passat concept

Mon, 14 Jan 2013

As part of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show debut package, Volkswagen has rolled out a sportier version of the Passat sedan, though it's strictly conceptual for now. A small dose of go-fast visuals have been added to the handsome Volkswagen, including 19-inch wheels, carbon-capped mirrors, an advanced front lighting system, LED taillamps and dual exhaust. Some carbon bits and upgraded leather are found inside the cabin, as well.
But the real performance chops come in the form of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends 250 horsepower to the Passat's front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. That's a good boost in power over the 170 hp of the base 2.5-liter inline-five, but not quite as potent as the 3.6-liter VR6. A lowered sport suspension and revised electronic steering are also on hand, making things slightly more involving out on the road... we assume.
It's not quite the performance concept we were hoping for, but a more enthusiastic Passat isn't necessarily a bad thing. Scroll down for the press release.

VW's Winterkorn tells 20,000 staffers of big cost-cutting plans

Thu, 24 Jul 2014

During a gathering of 20,000 Volkswagen Group employees at company headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany on Wednesday, CEO Martin Winterkorn dropped a bombshell. The boss stated that the automaker isn't operating efficiently enough and admitted the company needs to radically start cutting back to raise its profit margins. To right the ship, Winterkorn has proposed killing off less profitable models and spending less on research and development.
According to Reuters, Winterkorn wants to raise the VW brand's profit margin from about 2.9 percent in 2013 to a target of 6 percent. To make that possible, his plan amounts to increasing cost cutting until Volkswagen reaches about 5 billion euros ($6.7 billion) per year to get things back in order. "Over the short-term, we urgently need more efficiency and higher profit," the CEO said during his speech, according to Reuters.
However, Winterkorn can't make these decisions unilaterally. Volkswagen's works council also has a seat on the supervisory board to represent laborers, and it isn't likely to take the proposed cuts sitting down.

Chrysler slows minivan production, hasn't built VW Routan this year

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Chrysler has slowed production of its Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans this week, Automotive News reports. The Windsor, Ontario plant will cut its three shifts from eight hours each to four hours each in an effort "to align production with market demand," a Chrysler spokesperson told AN. Chrysler also builds the closely related Routan minivan for Volkswagen at its Ontario facility, but has not built a single example thus far in 2013.
Sales of Chrysler's minivans fell 15 percent for the first two months of 2013, and a large part of that has to do with the 26-percent drop of the Grand Caravan alone (the T&C was only down by one percent). According to Automotive News data, as of March 1, Chrysler had an unsold inventory of 24,713 Town and Country models and 18,547 Grand Caravans - a 69- and 43-day supply, respectively.
"No sense running full speed now, then have a lot of vehicles sitting around a few months down the line," Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson told AN. Full production is expected to resume again on March 18.
