Rare opportunity to own a silver 1978 Volvo 242GT - the first year of the GT series. This is a Volvo classic with all the GT essentials:  silver, black, and orange racing detail, 14" alloy wheels, four-speed with electric overdrive manual transmission, rigid suspension, high-performance, ventilated disk brakes, Lambda-sond emission control, GT steering wheel, and black corduroy interior.

This model is listed on hagerty.com classic cars in the $4500 range (assuming condition #4).  Reserve is $1000.

I am the original owner.  I have all maintenance records -- it has been well maintained.  It has all original equipment, no modifications. The odometer stopped working at 133K miles.  I am estimating is has 225,000 miles.  It has been used as an around-town car in recent years. It passed the Colorado emissions check in mid-2012.  The tires are Yokohama 185/70-R14.  Two are brand new and the other two have about 5K miles.  The radio-CD deck is new as well as the front speakers.

A video filmed 2-16-2013 of the car in action can be viewed at:

While this is a classic Volvo, it is also 35 years old and their are several components that could use attention.  The driver door has been replaced but not painted.  As mentioned, the odometer is not working, and the speedometer is not accurate.  The dual muffler exhaust system is in good shape except that a connector pipe between the exhaust manifold and front muffler should be replaced (I have an estimate for $250).  There are rust spots, mainly on the lower panels – see photos.  The rack and pinion steering has a slight leak, requiring periodic top-up of PS fluid.   You can also see that that right front turn signal mounting has been damaged.

Hot rod tractor stars in Swedish version of Farmkhana

Mon, 08 Sep 2014

The Nordic countries are known for their beautiful fjords, blonde-haired populace and bitter cold for a good portion of the year. The hours spent indoors during the dark, cold season apparently gives a lot of time for some crazy brainstorming. Tire store chain Vianor is highlighting the Traktor Terror in a new video. If Ken Block is the master of Gymkhana, then these guys know all about Farmkhana in their custom, turbocharged tractor.
According to the YouTube description from Vianor, the tractor is a 1956 Volvo BM Terrier with an added roll cage, adjustable front suspension and extended frame. The engine is thoroughly Swedish, and it's based on a Volvo 940 Turbo with a Volvo 240 head and Volvo 740 intercooler. However, it uses a Saab turbo Prospark ignition and fuel system. All told, the setup is claimed to make 225 horsepower and is capable of a top speed of 60 miles per hour.
That's not crazy power, but this tractor can certainly put it down. The farm machine has no problem smoking those big rear wheels and drifts easily.... although, it may be a tiny little bit unstable (hence the roll cage). If nothing else, this looks like the world's most fun way to be a farmer, that's for sure.

Volvo reveals 400-hp twin-charged PHEV power for new XC90 [UPDATE]

Tue, 08 Jul 2014

UPDATE: An earlier version of this post indicated that the larger of the conventional diesel engines was a five-cylinder. However all three powertrains announced for the upcoming new XC90 are actually four-cylinder engines. The text has been updated accordingly.
Volvo rolled in to new territory when it introduced the original XC90 back in 2002, creating its first SUV and one of its top-selling models. But that was 12 years ago. In the meantime it's followed up with the smaller XC60, but what the brand faithful and the industry at large have been looking forward to most is the arrival of the new XC90.
Previewed by the Concept XC Coupe at the Detroit Auto Show, the new XC90 is set to arrive later this year, but to keep us on our toes, the Swedish automaker has been steadily trickling out a stream of information and photos. Two months ago it gave us a glimpse inside the cabin, and last month it revealed its new infotainment system, but now Volvo has released details on the upcoming new XC90's powertrain.

Volvo to unveil permanent high-beam headlamp technology [w/video]

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

Volvo will be showing off its Active High Beam technology at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The system will allow drivers to use their high beams all the time and adds another responsibility to the cameras mounted by the rearview mirror, making them detect traffic ahead, whether it be another car or a truck or motorcycle and in the same lane or oncoming. When a vehicle is detected, a special projector in the Xenon lamps can block out only the portion of the high beam that would impair the other driver. Volvo says the system is accurate down to a 1.5-inch margin around another object.
Active High Beam will be fitted to the Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 and we have to assume they mean the non-US versions of those cars. Audi has a similar technology that it calls "matrix beam lighting," and due to the way the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard code is written, such active control of high beams is verboten on cars sold here.
The Swedish brand also plans to present a collision-avoidance technology it's calling a "world-first." The press release below has more information and the accompanying video demonstrates the lighting tech.
