1960 Chevy Impala 2 Door Hardtop Project. on 2040-cars
Smiths Creek, Michigan, United States
This is a project car that needs a complete restoration. It is not a rust bucket or parts car. I have a good Michigan title in my name. I will do the bad first to get it over with. It needs a trunk floor. The trunk seals let water in the trunk and the mat held it there and rusted the floor sheet metal. The braces are still in good condition. The trunk trough where the weather strip goes is rusted through in several places. There is a small hole under the back seat where it had a mouse nest . It does not need any patch panels in the inside of the car. only a patch under the back seat. The roof had some damage (not bad)but the guy that owned it did a very bad job of fixing it. It will need to be hammered back out. This is not going to be a hard fix. The roof on these cars is small and you can reach both sides of the roof panel from the outside. Here are some good things. It does not need any outside panels. The quarters rocker panels and are rust free. The body braces are all good. It is complete with no trim missing. The seats are there. It has some nice options like power brakes and power steering. It has a 283 powerpack with a 4 barrel carb. Everything looks to be original under the hood. The brown fenders have been replaces with a nice pair of New Mexico fenders and hood. The front sheet metal is not on the car right now. The farmer that owned this thought he would preserve the original finish by painting it with some of that Aluminium oxide paint. It is not hard to get off but it make the car look bad in the pictures. The blue paint is factory. The only things that I can see that are missing are the air filter and the front seat side shells. These are not going to be hard to find. I haven't tried to turn it over but I will check it out later this week. The windshield is broken. The left door glass is broken. I have a replacement door glass. All the window frames have nice chrome on them. most of the stainless trim is nice. It is always best to come look at it if possible before bidding. If you have any questions please ask/. I am a hobby restorer not a dealer and I try to work with the people building cars. The book value on these cars is in the 40 grand plus range so this is a very worth while car. I thought I should add some description. This is NOT a Michigan car. I bought it from a friend of the original owner. The car is from Western Tennessee. It had 1971 plates on it when I brought it home. It had been stored in a barn for almost 40 years. The only reason the trunk floor and trunk trough have rust is from a leaky trunk seal. The Old Cars price guide shows the price of a restorable car needing a complete restoration at 5500. I have added some real nice trim that had been damages during storage and also added a real nice front clip from New Mexico. The windshield is the only glass that needs replacement. The new windshield is about 300 bucks from Auto City Classics. the side window frames are in real nice condition. I tried to get it to turn over yesterday and was not able to get the starter to engage. It wouldn't turn over with the fan belt. I went out today and got some pictures of the rust areas. The only rust in the body that will take some time to repair is in the drip trough around the trunk lid where the rubber seal sat. On the passenger side there is a place about 12 to 14 inches long with holes rusted through. The second picture is the trough on the driver side. As you can see it is clean. There is a rust hole in front of the hinge on the left side (last picture). None of the rust got into the finish area of the quarterpanel or the inner quarter panel. only the trough. There are a couple of quarter size holes in the bottom of the quarter panel but nothing that will require much to fix. The inside rear wheel house is solid all around the wheel opening. Hope this helps

GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns
Thu, 31 Jan 2013Four different General Motors vehicles from the 2012 model year are being recalled over a potential airbag issue. The driver's side airbag shorting bar in the 2012 Buick Verano and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic might make contact with the airbag terminals, even during a crash. If so, the airbag won't deploy when it should, possibly increasing injury to the driver.
The recall is expected to begin on February 13 for the 3,896 units that might be affected. GM will notify owners who can then take their vehicles to dealers to have the airbag coil replaced. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below has more info.
GM 6.2L V8 claims most powerful light-duty truck engine title
Thu, 12 Sep 2013General Motors has officially captured the horsepower crown for mainstream pickup trucks with its 6.2-liter V8. The big mill, available in both the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, comes to market with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, handily outdoing its two cross-town competitors, Ram (5.7-liter V8, 395 ponies and 407 lb-ft) and Ford (6.2-liter V8, 411 hp and 434 lb-ft).
The new GM 6.2 will take a bit of an investment, though. Those that want the extra thrust will need to go with either the LTZ or High Country trims from the Chevy, or the SLT and Denali trims from GMC, which are the two highest trim levels for the respective vehicles. Trim levels aside, if you're in the business of towing, GM has you covered. Optioned with the 6.2-liter V8 and the Max Trailering Package, owners will be able to pull 12,000 pounds, a hugely impressive figure.
We still aren't certain as to what sort of economy the new engine will get, but it'll probably be a bad bet for the fuel conscious. As for availability, expect to see the 6.2-liter trucks in showrooms later in the fall.
Chevrolet donates 300 vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders
Thu, 28 Feb 2013Super Storm Sandy took out a lot of automobiles in its path of destruction through the Northeast last October. The number surpassed 250,000 at last count, and a few of those were owned by Chevrolet - cars either sitting on dealership lots or waiting at port to be shipped off. Rendered unsellable by the water damage inflicted by Sandy, these vehicles were facing the crusher. But Chevy didn't send them there.
Instead, Chevy had a better idea: It will be donating 300 of these vehicles damaged by Sandy to help train first responders at Guardian Centers in Perry, GA. Chevy is the official automotive partner of Guardian Centers, which is an 830-acre facility that trains first responders in disaster preparedness. Junked cars are practically a consumable commodity there, where a full-size cityscape simulator gives trainees an entire urban center in which to train for all sorts of rescue operations and disaster scenarios.
Chevy says its particular vehicles will be used "in conjunction with role players for wide area searches, traffic congestion in emergency situations, counter terrorism, public order and mass casualty exercises." While grim scenarios all, we're certainly glad there are people out there preparing for the unexpected. While a zombie apocalypse isn't officially on the list of potential disasters to prepare for, when the virus hits, we'll be hot-footing it to Perry, GA to hang with these guys and gals.
