For sale is a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner.  It is one of the rare retractable hardtops.  This car comes well equipped with options including 352 300 HP engine, Cruise-o-matic transmission, factory air conditioning, dual spotlights, power steering, power brakes and electric wipers.  It also has the desirable two tone colors of geranium and colonial white.  Overall on a 1 to 5 scale, I feel it is a condition 3, which is presentable for local parades and cruise-ins but not a show car.  I will detail an accurate description as follows.

First of all, the engine starts and runs well with no odd noises or smoke.  We are not sure of the actual mileage.  The Cruise-o-matic transmission is rebuilt and performs well.  The differential has no problems or issues.  The car has had one repaint long ago with the color scheme done in reverse of original as shown on the original data plate.  The paint has good shine but has nicks, scratches and waves.  There is evidence of filler along some lower parts of the body.  It appears there is small spotty rust in the outer rockers, lower door corners and lower rear quarters and wheel lips.  The floors are not rusty and have original paint showing under the carpet.  The trunk is mostly solid with only the outer rear corners being somewhat thin.  The inner rockers and floor supports are solid, and the frame has no damage or rust.  I see no evidence of any body or frame damage due to an accident.  The rear bumper has been rechromed, and the front is nice original.  All other stainless and chrome trim looks to be good original with some dings and scratches.  The windshield has small wiper scratches on the driver's side, and there are cracks in the passenger door glass.  All the windows roll up and down.  All weather stripping is original and worn with a few pieces missing.  The interior has been redone some years ago in original style and with similar to original materials.  It has some spotty wear.

Operationally the car is good with the retractable top working fine.  The exterior lights and turn signals work, as well as the wipers, horn, speedometer, odometer, oil light, amp light and dash lights.  The fuel gauge, radio, heater fan, clock, left door lock and domelight do not work.  The air conditioner is missing some refrigerant lines and does not work, but all the main components are there.  The right hand spotlight is damaged and missing some parts.  Also the rear Fairlane emblem, luggage tub and jack are missing.  Some recently repaired items are the transmission and radiator.  Recently replaced items are brakes, battery, starter solenoid, starter drive, mufflers, drive belts and thermostat.

Overall it is a mostly complete, good driving car with a desirable color combination and good options which can be enjoyed as is or as an excellent candidate for restoration.  Some miscellaneous spare spotlight and continental kit parts are included.  Thanks for looking.  You can call Steve at 812-449-7184.

The NADA Classic Car Price Guide lists the value of this car in this condition with a low retail price amount of $20,625.  Hagerty Insurance also shows this car in this condition as having a value of $25,000.  My reserve has been lowered to $19,000.

Jaguar design boss admits X-Type was a mistake

Thu, 19 Sep 2013

History has a way of repeating itself, especially in the auto industry. When Jaguar was owned by Ford, the British brand attempted to field a competitor for the BMW 3 Series, called the X-Type. Based on the bones of a Ford Mondeo, it aped the styling of Jaguar's flagship model, the XJ, while borrowing liberally from the Ford parts bin. That was 2001.
Now, in 2013, Jaguar is planning a new 3 Series challenger based on the platform previewed by the C-X17 Concept, while Ford is attempting to take the latest Mondeo upmarket. The moves have both brands recognizing where, why, and how the X-Type failed. "It didn't look mature or powerful or anything. It was just a car," Jaguar's current head of advanced design, Julian Thomson, told PistonHeads. Basing the X-Type on a front-drive car while giving it styling that was meant for a rear-driver lead to proportions that "were plainly wrong," Thomson told PH. Ford's European head of quality, Gunnar Herrmann, added that the X-Type was "a fake Jaguar, because every piece I touch is Ford."
For what it's worth, the X-Type's successor in the segment will sport rear-drive, with plenty of input from Ian Callum. Thomson described the new model, which would challenge the 3 Series as having, "Big wheels right to the ends of the car, low bonnet, short overhangs, very low cabins." Sounds good to us.

Ford-sponsored survey says a third of Brits have snapped a 'selfie' while driving [w/videos]

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

Talking on the phone while driving isn't advisable, and texting while driving is downright dangerous. Considering those truths, the fact that we even need to point this out this is incredibly disturbing: taking "selfies" while behind the wheel is exceptionally stupid. But, it's a thing that a third of 18- to 24-year-old British drivers have copped to doing, according to a new study from Ford.
Ford, through its Driving Skills for Life program, surveyed 7,000 smartphone owners from across Europe, all aged between 18 and 24, and found that young British drivers were more likely to snap a selfie while behind the wheel than their counterparts in Germany, France, Romania, Italy, Spain and Belgium.
According to the study, the average selfie takes 14 seconds, which, while traveling at 60 miles per hour, is long enough to travel over the length of nearly four football fields (the Ford study uses soccer fields, but we translated it to football, because, you know, America). That's an extremely dangerous distance to not be focused on the road.

Leno chooses his top 10 Mustangs

Sat, 14 Jun 2014

He may be a few months late to the party, but in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, Jay Leno has delivered a short video in which he runs down which of the Blue Oval's pony cars from the past 50 years are his favorites.
The list is pretty darn similar to our own, with some of the big names from the Mustang's half century making an appearance, while there are three or four cars here that we think you'll be pretty surprised by.
Take a look below for this short video from Jay Leno's Garage.
