THIS GHIA HAS BEEN DRIVEN ONLY ABOUT 50 MILES IN THE PAST TWO YEARS SINCE THE RESTORATION WAS COMPLETED.  IT HAS BEEN SITTING IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN A PRIVATE COLLECTION.  A NEW BATTERY AND FRESH GASOLINE WERE JUST ADDED TODAY WITH THE ENGINE FIRING RIGHT UP AND RUNNING FLAWLESSLY!  A FULL UPDATED MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SAFETY CHECK SHOULD BE PERFORMED BEFORE DRIVING REGULARLY DUE TO THE AGE AND AMOUNT OF SITTING TIME OF THIS VEHICLE.  ALSO NOTICED TODAY BY OUR DETAILER WAS THAT THERE ARE A FEW AREA'S WHERE THE NEW PAINT HAS DEVELOPED WHAT LOOKS LIKE AN AIR POCKET UNDER THE PAINT FINISH; HOWEVER, THE PAINT BASE AND CLEAR COAT LOOK NORMAL WITH GREAT SHINE.

WITH A SIMILAR LOW-LIGHT KARMANN GHIA COUPE HAVING JUST SOLD THIS PAST SUMMER AT AUCTION FOR CLOSE TO $45K,  IT'S CLEAR THAT THESE RARE VW'S ARE ON A UP HILL CLIMB OF DESIRABILITY AND APPRECIATATION.  THIS CAR'S UN- MOLESTED HISTORY AND ORIGINALITY MAKE IT A SMART INVESTMENT WITH LOT'S OF SMILES AND FUN TO COME :-) !!

Volkswagen Golf Wagon caught completely uncovered

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Without a lot of information to go with them, our camera-toting spies have captured some new images of a Volkswagen Golf wagon variant that is almost completely undisguised. In fact, the one piece of camouflage on the tidy wagon would probably have gone unnoticed to most casual viewers. Look closely at the rear three-quarter view of the car and you'll notice that the apparent taillight clusters are actually fakes - the outline of the real units is faintly visible behind the blue bodywork and the sticker-like fake taillights.
It's a good guess then, that this Golf wagon (called a Golf Kombi by our spy photographer) is a prototype that's pretty far along in the development cycle for Volkswagen. We can't be sure what impact this will have on the company's small wagon offering here in the US, but we'd be pretty surprised if something very like this didn't end up as the next Jetta SportWagen. We might well have more information on that front, after we visit Geneva next week.

Volkswagen shows off performance-ish Passat concept

Mon, 14 Jan 2013

As part of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show debut package, Volkswagen has rolled out a sportier version of the Passat sedan, though it's strictly conceptual for now. A small dose of go-fast visuals have been added to the handsome Volkswagen, including 19-inch wheels, carbon-capped mirrors, an advanced front lighting system, LED taillamps and dual exhaust. Some carbon bits and upgraded leather are found inside the cabin, as well.
But the real performance chops come in the form of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends 250 horsepower to the Passat's front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. That's a good boost in power over the 170 hp of the base 2.5-liter inline-five, but not quite as potent as the 3.6-liter VR6. A lowered sport suspension and revised electronic steering are also on hand, making things slightly more involving out on the road... we assume.
It's not quite the performance concept we were hoping for, but a more enthusiastic Passat isn't necessarily a bad thing. Scroll down for the press release.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. Click on over to view the extensive gallery of high-quality images from Ran When Parked.
