1991 BMW E30 318iS, Full Restoration, Tasteful Modifications
This vehicle was purchased as an abandoned project. It had been nearly stripped with the best of intentions by the
previous owner, but he decided to let it go when he realized how in over his head he was. Over 6 months I have
painstakingly restored this car with as many new parts as possible following a complete inside and out respray in
BMW Imola Red II. I've taken care to follow an OE Plus methodology in the restoration, picking the finest original
options and period correct upgrades, deviating only in the powertrain choice to make the car an absolutely
delightful driver with its more modern, powerful engine and transmission.
As little used hardware as possible was put back into the car. No fasteners with tool marks or plating corrosion
were tolerable. Anything that could not be purchased new was stripped and replated to like new appearance. Every
nut, bolt, clip, clamp, wire tie, grommet etc possible was purchased new from the dealer.
The entire car was dismantled to allow for a complete, through and proper respray covering every square inch of the
chassis inside and out with new paint. While the chassis wiring harness was out of the car it was meticulously laid
out, gone over, inspected for damage, and rewrapped with new OE BMW fabric loom tape as required.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a finer more well rounded example of a non-M E30 on the market today.

2013 Nissan GT-R and 2013 Alpina B6 mix it up on track and street
Fri, 24 May 2013
Here we have Autocar making an unforeseen comparison: the Nissan GT-R against the Alpina B6 at Brands Hatch and on public roads. Steve Sutcliffe clobbers the circuit in the 3,828-pound, all-wheel-drive sports car, then sees how well the 4,114-pound, rear-wheel drive grand tourer does against it.
Sutcliffe says there are quite a few similarities between the two cars, but that's really only on the spec sheet. The Nissan's got two turbos attached to its 3.8-liter V6, 542 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The Alpina's got two turbos attached to its 4.4-liter V8, 532 hp and 528 lb-ft. But one's brief is to be a monster on the track, the other on the boulevard, and if there's anything the video demonstrates, it's each car's focus.
BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe caught again
Tue, 02 Apr 2013It's been a while since we've seen the upcoming BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe out testing, but we're sort of inclined to ask "Why?" yet again. After all, the 4 Series is what the new 3 Series-based coupes and convertibles will be called, so the idea of another four-door version just sort of seems redundant. In other words, just how different will a 4 Series Gran Coupe be from a 3 Series sedan, aside from perhaps a more rakish roofline or a four-passenger seating configuration? Probably not much, but BMW clearly thinks it can use the additional bodystyle to rake in some extra profits.
Anyway, back to these spy shots. No more of the 4GC's skin has been revealed since the last time we saw it, but we fully expect it to share a lot of its design DNA with the 3 Series sedan, not to mention the attractive 4 Series coupe concept that bowed at this year's Detroit Auto Show.
Powertrain options should carry over direct from the 3 Series line, so we expect to see 428i and 435i models on hand, packing turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, respectively. We're sure that BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive will be available, and who knows, we could even get a 428d version with the new 2.0-liter turbodiesel four that debuted in the 328d at the New York Auto Show last week, or even an M4 variant.
BMW readying impressive track-focused M Power App
Thu, 06 Jun 2013There are a lot of questionable automotive apps that people put on their smartphones these days, but BMW has created what could be one of the most useful and integrated car apps ever. The new M Power App, which will be available this summer only for Apple iPhones, allows BMW owners a whole new way to record their performance on the street or on a track. During the launch of the recent BMW M6 Gran Coupe, BimmerPost was able to get a full demonstration of how this new app works.
Far more involved than the current M Power Meter, the M Power App records data from in-car sensors and acts as a telemetry tool to allow drivers to see how they did on a particular track. Aside from an overlay on a track map showing acceleration and braking applications as well as head-to-head comparisons, the app also shows a line graph of everything from brake and throttle inputs to g-force, fuel mileage and engine speed. A small visual on the screen also shows steering angle, and lap times and speeds can all be stored as well. The data can even be shared with others, whether for bragging rights or instruction purposes.
This app works on any newer BMW equipped with the BMW Apps option, but the phone must be tethered to the car and the data understandably cannot be viewed while driving. Scroll down for the video demonstration recorded recently at Austin's Circuit of the Americas.
